"Hockey wrist:" dorsal ulnotriquetral ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar-sided wrist pain at the dorsal proximal triquetrum, especially during wrist pronation, flexion and radial deviation, is common in athletes, particularly ice hockey players. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in which position the dorsal ulnotriquetral ligament (DUTL) is placed under the greatest strain, the torque to failure and the injury pattern. We hypothesized that the DUTL is maximally strained with wrist flexion, pronation and radial deviation, and that, at failure, the ligament tears off the triquetrum. METHODS: We performed a biomechanical study on 7 fresh fro

Rehabilitation of the wrist and hand following sports injury.

In sports, wrist and hand injuries are commonplace. Too often, injuries to these areas can be under-treated and left for further complications to arise. While some injuries to the wrist and hand can be treated conservatively with immediate return to play, others require a more in-depth assessment prior to return to play. This article describes the most common wrist and hand injuries in sport, and provides information related to current treatment approaches.

[The emergent repair of peripheral nerve injury of the wrist].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the emergent repair of peripheral nerve injury of the wrist. METHODS: From July 1993 to December 1997, 17 cases were admitted, which 21 injured peripheral nerves were repaired emergently. Among them, there were 11 cases of median nerve injury, 2 cases of ulnar nerve injury and 4 cases of median and ulnar nerve injury. All the nerves were ruptured completely except one which was partially ruptured. The emergent operation was taken and the injured nerves were repaired by microsurgical technique. RESULTS: Followed up 6 to 18 months after operation, 95.25%

The role of arthroscopy in the treatment of wrist injuries in the athlete.

Wrist arthroscopy provides an ideal means of evaluating intraarticular soft-tissue injuries of the wrist. Many lesions such as tears of the triangular fibrocartilage complex can be treated by arthroscopic means as well. Reduction of articular fractures of the distal radius and pin fixation, reduction of scaphoid fractures and intramedullary fixation, and arthroscopic reduction and transcutaneous pin stabilization of acute carpal dissociation patterns can all be accomplished with minimally invasive techniques under arthroscopic control. These measures often provide the athlete with shorter peri

Spaghetti Wrist Injury: Past, Present, and Future.

This study will present our experience in treating "spaghetti wrist," a complex injury of the distal forearm, with laceration of tendons, nerve(s), artery(es), and soft tissues. Also, we will present a review of the literature summarizing preoperative preparations, surgical and rehabilitation therapy, and immediate and delayed postoperative outcomes. The patients had complex injuries located in the distal 1/3 of the forearm, regardless of the physical etiologic agent, encompassing breach of the deep antebrachial fascia, at least one nerve, tendons, and, in some cases, arteries, along with sing

Traumatic injury to a wrist with incidental Madelung's deformity.

We present a longstanding case of subtle Madelung's deformity in association with a new traumatic radial styloid fracture. Magnetic resonance imaging accurately distinguished this deformity from an acute fracture and highlighted the correct cause of the patient's pain. An unnecessary procedure was avoided.

The role of arthroscopy in the treatment of wrist injuries in the athlete.

As a minimally invasive procedure, wrist arthroscopy provides the advantages of accurate, direct visual inspection of intra-articular structures for diagnostic purposes and dramatically reduced morbidity for surgical treatment of certain disorders. For an athlete who has a limited window of opportunity to compete, arthroscopy can offer an earlier, more accurate, more complete diagnosis than other imaging techniques for soft-tissue disorders of the wrist. Arthroscopic surgery can frequently offer an abbreviated recuperation period and earlier return to competition. Arthroscopy offers advantageo

[Arthroscopic diagnosis of disk injury of the wrist joint].

Arthrography of the wrist joint is a possibility to show a disc lesion by demonstrating a communication between the radioulnar and -carpal space in cases of persistent wrist pain after an accident without any bone disorders in x-ray. For differentiation between a pre-existent disc variety with a central whole and a real traumatic tear or degenerative alterations arthroscopy is the method of choice. Furthermore other changes of the wrist as free bodies and chondropathy can be seen. The indication for an arthrotomy and a causal treatment are more exact and were proved by a follow-up of 10 patien

Wrist and Hand Overuse Injuries with a Special Focus on Soft Tissue Involvement.

Overuse injuries of the hand and wrist result from repetitive use or recurrent direct trauma, most often related to work or sports involving repetitive movements and weight-bearing. These stress-induced injuries affect a wide range of tissues, including tendons and tenosynovium, ligaments, neurovascular structures, cartilage, and bone. In athletes, although overuse injuries are less likely than acute traumatic injuries to cause long-term disability, untreated cases can significantly impair athletic performance. Magnetic resonance imaging plays a pivotal role in accurate diagnosis by demonstrat

Advances in the Treatment of Hand and Wrist Injuries in the Elite Athlete.

Caring for hand and wrist injuries in the elite athlete brings distinct challenges, with case-by-case decisions regarding surgical intervention and return-to-play. Metacarpal fractures, thumb ulnar collateral ligament tears, and scaphoid fractures are common upper-extremity injuries in the elite athlete that can be detrimental to playing time and future participation. Treatment should therefore endure the demand of accelerated rehabilitation and return-to-activity without compromising long-term outcomes. Fortunately, the literature has supported emerging management options that support goals s

Advances in the Repair of Palmer type IB TFCC Injuries With Wrist Arthroscopy.

The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is essential for maintaining wrist stability. Injury-caused pain is the primary cause of ulnar wrist pain. The TFCC injury refractory to conservative treatment requires further surgical treatment, and because Palmer type IB tears belong to peripheral injuries due to their proximity to the blood supply area, arthroscopic suture repair has become the preferred surgical method for TFCC injury repair, exhibiting strong healing ability. This study reviewed the anatomy of TFCC, injury classification, and advances in arthroscopic suturing for treating Palm
