Category specificity in reading and writing: the case of number words.

In standard models, word meanings contribute to reading words aloud and writing them to dictation. It is known that categories of knowledge and the associated word meanings can be spared or impaired selectively, but it has not been possible to demonstrate that category-specific effects apply to reading and writing. Here we report the case of a neurodegenerative patient with selectively spared numerical abilities whose brain damage left him able to read and write only number words.

[Agraphia and preservation of music writing in a bilingual piano teacher].

A bilingual virtuoso piano teacher developed aphasia and amusia, probably due to cerebral embolism. The perfectly demarcated and unique lesion was located in the left posterior temporoparietal region. Language examinations in French and Italian demonstrated entirely comparable difficulties in both languages. The linguistic course was favorable after a period of auditory agnosia and global aphasia. Language became fluent again 3 months after the onset, with a marked vocabulary loss and phonemic paraphasias with attempts at self-correction. Repetition was altered markedly with a deficit in audit

Role-reversed systematic desensitization in the treatment of a writing phobia.

A role-reversal technique was employed to teach cognitive coping skills to a patient with a writing phobia. The patient presented desensitization scenes to the therapist and devised coping strategies for lessening anxiety. Treatment resulted in a reduction of anxiety and an increased ability to write in the presence of other people. A 10-mo. follow-up showed no relapse.

Primary school students' achievement emotions in writing acquisition: Development of the AEQ-WEES and links to students' writing competencies and social integration over time.

BACKGROUND: Acquiring writing skills poses not only cognitive but also emotional challenges for many primary school students. Although achievement emotions have received increasing research attention in recent years, little is known about how these emotions unfold during the process of writing acquisition and how they relate to both academic and social outcomes in early schooling. AIMS: To address this gap, the present study introduces the newly developed Achievement Emotions Questionnaire-Writing in Early Elementary School (AEQ-WEES), which is designed to assess students' emotions in early w

A review on: Interdisciplinary Practices in Academia: Writing, Teaching and Assessment.

The monolingual model does not reflect the multilingual realities of today and research across the cognitive, social and linguistic domains is still limited. In addition, there is an urgent need for a more inclusive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogy to address the heterogeneity of English academic writing across national, cultural and disciplinary contexts. These gaps are addressed in the edited volume, Interdisciplinary Practices in Academia: Writing, Teaching and Assessment, edited by Buckingham, Dong and Jiang, which investigates how interdisciplinarity affects the teaching and a

Maternal circadian rhythm writes immune fate in offspring.

An organism's environment is rarely constant. Light, temperature, humidity, food availability, and microbial exposure often fluctuate rhythmically, creating daily patterns that organisms must anticipate and respond to (Paranjpe and Sharma 2005; van der Linden et al. 2010; Thaiss et al. 2014). The ability of biological systems to align physiology with such environmental cycles has fascinated biologists for decades, and circadian regulation is now known to influence diverse processes, including metabolism, behaviour, development, immunity, and stress responses (Fagiani et al. 2022; Poole and Kit

As fragments of a vessel: On anonymisation and the ethics of clinical case writing.

Case-writing is always poised between the wish to convey clinical truth and the duty to protect the patient's privacy. In the digital age, where clinical material circulates widely and remains permanently accessible, this tension has become more acute. We argue that anonymisation should not be reduced to the concealment of details regarding our patients but understood as a transformation process akin to mentalisation: a way of reshaping raw experience into a narrative that can be shared without falsifying the therapeutic encounter. Preserving clinical truth requires placing the therapeutic all

Narrative Matters: Ursula Le Guin's writings and adolescence.

Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) was an influential American writer who was a leading literary figure of the 20th century. She is known for her contributions to the science fiction and fantasy genres. She wrote numerous novels, short stories, poems, and essays throughout her career, exploring various themes and pushing the boundaries of speculative fiction. In this article, I discuss Le Guin's writings on the developmental tasks of adolescence. In Le Guin's fiction, she examines how different social and cultural contexts determine patterns of maturation and the acquisition of the roles and respon

Exploring the use of grammarly in assessing English academic writing.

This study explores the extent to which Grammarly can be a reliable assessment tool for academic English writing. Ten articles published in high-status scholarly Q.1 journals and written by specialist English native speakers were used to evaluate the accuracy of Grammarly's flagged issues. The results showed that Grammarly tends to over-flag many issues resulting in many false positives; besides, it does not take into consideration optional usage in English. The study concluded that although Grammarly can identify many ambiguous instances of language use that writers would do well to review an

Cascadable in-memory computing based on symmetric writing and readout.

The building block of in-memory computing with spintronic devices is mainly based on the magnetic tunnel junction with perpendicular interfacial anisotropy (p-MTJ). The resulting asymmetric write and readout operations impose challenges in downscaling and direct cascadability of p-MTJ devices. Here, we propose that a previously unimplemented symmetric write and readout mechanism can be realized in perpendicular-anisotropy spin-orbit (PASO) quantum materials based on Fe3GeTe2 and WTe2. We demonstrate that field-free and deterministic reversal of the perpendicular magnetization can be achieved u

The summary writing performance of bilingual learners with reading difficulties.

writing is an important tactic for learning from text and the summaries provide information on students' comprehension and learning processes. We investigated the nature of the summaries produced by bilingual adolescents, and whether their summaries were related to their reading abilities in their first and second languages. In each language, we examined the performance of students identified as typically developing, poor decoders, or poor comprehenders. Participants were 246 grade 8 students enrolled in English immersion programs in China. Measures included English word reading and reading co

Evolution of Writing Impairment in Spanish Patients with Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Although some studies suggest that writing difficulties may be one of the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD), they have been scarcely studied compared to oral language. Particularly noteworthy is the paucity of longitudinal studies that enable the observation of writing impairment as cognitive decline progresses. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of writing in patients with AD and to monitor the deterioration of their performance over a follow-up period. METHODS: Sixty-four participants (half with AD and half healthy elderly) were compare

Colchicum Genus in the Writings of Ancient Greek and Byzantine Physicians.

The plants of the Colchicum family were known during the archaic period in Greece for their deleterious properties. Later on, they were used for the treatment of podagra. The treatment was introduced by the ancient Greek physicians and passed on to the Byzantine and Arabian physicians to endure until nowadays. The first plant was most probably named "Medea" from the notorious Colchican witch. As the most common member of the family blossoms in autumn, the plant was named Colchicum autumnale. Various nominations were also used, such as Ephemeron, Hermodactyl, Anima articulorum and Surugen. Our

Morpheme-Based Reading and Writing in Spanish Children with Dyslexia.

It has been well documented that morphemic structure (roots and affixes) have an impact in reading, but effects seem to depend on the reading experience of readers and lexical characteristics of the stimuli. Specifically, it has been reported that morphemes constitute reading units for developing readers and children with dyslexia when they encounter a new word. In addition, recent studies have stated that the effect of morphology is also present in spelling, as morphological information facilitates spelling accuracy and influences handwriting times. The goal of this study was to investigate t

Improving the Historical Knowledge and Writing of Students With or At Risk for LD.

In this study, we explored the potential of two forms of discussion (disciplinary vs. traditional) for 39 sixth- and seventh-grade students with or at risk for learning disabilities (LD), before writing historical arguments. Nine teachers who led small group discussions in six heterogeneous social studies classrooms implemented the intervention. Students who were involved in disciplinary discussions ( n = 19) scored statistically higher than their peers who engaged in traditional discussions ( n = 20) on a measure of historical knowledge (partial η2 = .23); they also wrote essays with better p
