Autoimmune dermatoses are associated with antibody deposition, complement activation and subsequent tissue destruction. Plasmin-mediated proteolysis is thought to be one element of tissue destruction in autoimmune bullous dermatoses such as bullous pemphigoid. Biochemical and immunological studies on bullous pemphigoid skin blister fluid disclosed plasmin/alpha 2-antiplasmin and putative plasmin/alpha 2-macroglobulin complexes. Since the formation of plasmin/inhibitor complexes requires active plasmin, our findings indicate previous activation of plasminogen to plasmin in skin lesions.

Antithrombin activities in 30 severely malnourished children and 40 normal children were estimated in clotting tests by thrombin neutralisation as anti-Xa and by a heparin antithrombin assay; and by immunodiffusion as alpha 2-globulin and alpha 1-antitrypsin. The results of a combined clinical and laboratory study in 55 patients throughout the leprosy spectrum are reported. Thirty one of these patients suffered from an inflammatory peripheral polyarthritis which has not been previously described and which was unassociated with the characteristics of erythema nodosum leprosum reactions or with Charcot's joints. alpha 2 Macroglobulin was raised significantly only in those patients with leprosy and arthritis.
