Genetic and environmental influences on disordered gambling in men and women.

CONTEXT: Women now represent nearly half of all individuals in treatment for pathological gambling (PG), but relatively little is known about the causes of PG among women or potential sex differences in the causes of PG. OBJECTIVES: To (1) investigate the role of genetic and environmental risk factors in the development of disordered gambling (DG) among women and (2) determine the extent to which the genetic and environmental risk of DG among women differs quantitatively or qualitatively from the risk of DG among men. (Disordered gambling refers to the full continuum of gambling-related probl

Drinking histories in alcohol-use-disordered youth: preliminary findings on relationships to platelet serotonin transporter expression with genotypes of the serotonin transporter.

OBJECTIVE: The serotonin (5-HT) transporter (5-HTT) is thought to play a key role in the onset of alcohol use, with potential behavioral and biological mechanisms mediated by the level of 5-HT in the synapse and in cerebral spinal fluid. Although 5-HT dysregulation has been related to poor impulse control, the biological mechanism is unknown, although functional control of the serotonergic system has been shown to be regulated in part by differential expression of the 5-HTT. The gene responsible for encoding 5-HTT has a functional polymorphism at the 5'-regulatory promoter region, which result

Polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene and moderators of prolactin response to meta-chlorophenylpiperazine in African-American cocaine abusers and controls.

Serotonin (5-HT) function is altered in several psychiatric disorders, including cocaine dependence (CD), and its role in impulsive-aggressive behaviors has been widely studied. However, the relationship between psychopathological and behavioral dimensions and mechanisms of 5-HT alterations remains unclear. We investigated the relationship of a polymorphism in the 5' promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) with prolactin (PRL) response to meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP) in a sample of 68 African-American individuals, 35 CD subjects and 33 controls. We also examined whe

Shared genetic contributions to pathological gambling and major depression in men.

CONTEXT: Although pathological gambling (PG) and major depression (MD) frequently co-occur, little is known regarding the relative contributions of environmental and genetic factors to the codevelopment of the disorders. OBJECTIVES: To estimate environmental and genetic contributions to PG and MD as defined in DSM-III-R and the lifetime co-occurrence of PG and MD. DESIGN: Survey data from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry were examined in biometric models. SETTING: Telephone interview. PARTICIPANTS: Of 10, 253 eligible participants, 7869 were successfully interviewed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: E

Joint consideration of distal and proximal predictors of premature mortality among serious juvenile offenders.

PURPOSE: Juvenile offenders are at heightened risk of death in adolescence and young adulthood compared to adolescents in the general population. The current study extends previous research by testing the joint contributions of distal (historical and demographic characteristics) and proximal (closer to the time of the death) predictors of mortality. We also tested whether proximal variables were potential mediators of the effects of distal variables on mortality. METHODS: Participants were 1,354 serious juvenile offenders, 45 (3.32%) of whom were deceased by the completion of the study. Data

Prevalence of adolescent problem gambling, related harms and help-seeking behaviours among an Australian population.

Epidemiological studies have consistently reported prevalence rates ranging between 0.9 and 23.5% for problem gambling among young people. With such a large range reported in the literature, it is clear that more research in this area would be of value. The current study investigated the prevalence rate of adolescent gambling and problem gambling and explored types of harm-related and help-seeking behaviours associated with gambling specific to this population in an Australian setting. A self-administered battery of questionnaires was distributed to 252 students aged 12-18 years, attending fou

The association between smoking and subsequent suicide-related outcomes in the National Comorbidity Survey panel sample.

Controversy exists about whether the repeatedly documented associations between smoking and subsequent suicide-related outcomes (SROs; ideation, plans, gestures and attempts) are due to unmeasured common causes or to causal effects of smoking on SROs. We address this issue by examining associations of smoking with subsequent SROs with and without controls for potential explanatory variables in the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) panel. The latter consists of 5001 people who participated in both the 1990-2002 NCS and the 2001-2003 NCS follow-up survey. Explanatory variables include sociodemog

Relationship satisfaction and psychological distress among concerned significant others of pathological gamblers.

This study explores correlates of psychological distress and relationship satisfaction among concerned significant others (CSOs) of pathological gamblers. CSOs often seek help in dealing with the gambling problem and are influential in recovery, but little is known about the sources of their distress. A sample of 186 CSOs responded to media announcements offering telephone and bibliotherapy support. In multivariate models, CSOs who were spouses and who were younger reported more personal distress, and higher distress was associated with a greater number of CSO emotional and behavioral conseque

Psychosocial correlates of problem gambling in Australian students.

Psychopathy has traditionally been characterised as a disorder primarily of personality (particularly affective deficits) and, to a lesser extent, behaviour. Although often used interchangeably, the diagnostic constructs of psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, and dissocial personality disorder are distinct. In this article, the relevant historical and contemporary literature concerning psychopathy is briefly reviewed. The diagnostic criteria for psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, and dissocial personality disorder are compared. Consideration is given to the assessment, pre

Pathways to late-life problematic gambling in seniors: a grounded theory approach.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To develop a grounded theory on how older adults, who may not have previously experienced gambling issues, come to develop gambling problems in later life. DESIGN AND METHODS: Through semistructured in-depth interviews with 31 adults aged 56-85, routes that led the current sample of older adults to develop late-life gambling problems were identified and mapped into coherent pathways using a constructivist grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: Three main pathways to late-life problematic gambling were identified, all linked with a common theme of isolation: a grief pathw

Possible association between serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism and impulsivity in Koreans.

Serotonin has become the major focus of biological studies of suicidal behavior and impulsive-aggressive behavior in humans. The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene is one of the important genes involved in the regulation of serotonin transmission. We examined the association of impulsivity in Korean populations with a functional polymorphism of the promoter region of the 5-HTT gene (5-HTTLPR). We recruited 186 adolescent prisoners and 64 medical students. Impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale and we divided all subjects into three groups: impulsive subjects (IS, N=121)

The mental health of clean-up workers 18 years after the Chernobyl accident.

BACKGROUND: The psychological aftermath of the Chernobyl accident is regarded as the largest public health problem unleashed by the accident to date. Yet the mental health of the clean-up workers, who faced the greatest radiation exposure and threat to life, has not been systematically evaluated. This study describes the long-term psychological effects of Chernobyl in a sample of clean-up workers in Ukraine. METHOD: The cohorts were 295 male clean-up workers sent to Chernobyl between 1986 and 1990 interviewed 18 years after the accident (71% participation rate) and 397 geographically matched

Clinical differences among patients treated for mental health problems in general medical and specialty mental health settings in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication.

OBJECTIVE: General medical (GM) treatments for mental health disorders are less likely than specialty mental health (SMH) treatments to be adequate. We explored whether differences in the clinical characteristics of patients treated in each sector (GM-only or SMH-only) or in both sectors (GM+SMH) may help to explain this finding. METHOD: We analyzed data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R), a nationally representative household survey of 5692 English-speaking adult household residents that was carried out in 2001-2003. The NCS-R used a fully structured diagnostic intervie

Twelve-month prevalence of DSM-5 mental disorders and the psychosocial correlates- a child and adolescent psychiatric epidemiologic survey in Hong Kong SAR.

BACKGROUND: Childhood and adolescence, as critically important developmental stages, set the premise for the lifelong trajectory of health and well-being. Epidemiologic evidence abounds in purporting that half of all lifetime mental disorders begin in adolescence. Epidemiologic data based on structured clinical diagnostic assessments are disproportionately scarce in Asian countries that host fast-growing youth population along a wide socioeconomic spectrum in the course of globalisation. METHODS: A cross-sectional school-based epidemiologic survey was conducted on a representative random samp

Dopamine genetic risk scores and psychiatric symptoms: Interacting risk factors for impulse control behaviours in de novo Parkinson's disease.

Up to 45% of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience impulse control disorders (ICDs), characterized by a loss of voluntary control over impulses, drives or temptations. This study aimed to investigate whether previously identified genetic and psychiatric risk factors interact towards the development of ICDs in PD. A total of 278 de novo PD patients (ICD-free at enrollment) were selected from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative database. ICD presence at baseline and yearly follow-up assessments were evaluated via the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders. Sympto

Brunner syndrome associated MAOA mutations result in NMDAR hyperfunction and increased network activity in human dopaminergic neurons.

Monoamine neurotransmitter abundance affects motor control, emotion, and cognitive function and is regulated by monoamine oxidases. Among these, Monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) catalyzes the degradation of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin into their inactive metabolites. Loss-of-function mutations in the X-linked MAOA gene have been associated with Brunner syndrome, which is characterized by various forms of impulsivity, maladaptive externalizing behavior, and mild intellectual disability. Impaired MAOA activity in individuals with Brunner syndrome results in bioamine aberration, but it is c

Association of functional variants in the dopamine D2-like receptors with risk for gambling behaviour in healthy Caucasian subjects.

Pathological gambling (PG) is an impulse control disorder with suggestive genetic vulnerability component. We evaluated the association of genetic variants in the dopaminergic receptor genes (DRD1-3s) with risk for gambling in healthy subjects using the Canadian Problem Gambling Index (CPGI). Healthy Caucasian subjects who had gambled at least once in their lifetime (n=242) were included in the analysis. Gender was not associated with the CPGI, while younger age was associated with higher CPGI scores. We have found that none of the single polymorphisms investigated on DRD1 and DRD3 were associ
