Ixodes ricinus is the primary vector of Borrelia spirochetes in Europe, including both the Lyme borreliosis (LB) group and the relapsing fever (RF) group. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of different genospecies from the B. burgdorferi s.l. complex and B. miyamotoi in questing I. ricinus collected in chosen areas in Lower Silesia, SW Poland. A total of 599 I. ricinus ticks were investigated using the PCR-RFLP method. The calculated overall minimum infection rate of ticks with Borrelia spirochetes in Lower Silesia was 15.5%. Five different restriction patterns, characteristi

Among diseases transmitted by ticks in the Czech Republic, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) caused by Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete are most important. We propose an effective and specific test for detection of TBEV in a single tick or a pool of ticks based on the detection of TBEV RNA using an RT-PCR technique without RNA purification. The method is very sensitive with the detection limit of about 14 fg TBEV RNA in total RNA obtained from brain suspension from suckling mice infected with TBEV per reaction. The primers were derived

In Germany, 100-300 autochthonous clinical TBE cases have been recorded annually. There are high-risk areas in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg and ongoing low-risk areas in Hesse, Thuringia, and the Rhineland-Palatinate and single cases in Saxony. In order to be able to evaluate the epidemiological changes described here, it must be mentioned that a new definition of TBE risk areas was introduced on the district level in 1998 in Germany and in 2001 with the new Infection Protection Act (Infektionsschutzgesetz) which states that TBE is a notifiable disease. This led to the replacement of earlier

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose a major threat to human health in Europe and the whole northern hemisphere. Despite a high prevalence of TBPs in Ixodes ricinus ticks, knowledge on the incidence of tick-borne diseases in humans infested by this tick species is limited. This study was conducted in the year 2019 on patients who presented themselves to the Pasteur Institute Novi Sad with tick infestations. Ticks (n = 31) feeding on human (n = 30) and blood samples from the same individuals were collected by physicians and a microfluidic real-time high-throughput PCR system was used to test the ge

BACKGROUND: Ixodes scapularis organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) play important roles in tick-rickettsial pathogen interactions. In this report, we characterized the role of these conserved molecules in ticks infected with either Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi or tick-borne Langat virus (LGTV), a pathogen closely related to tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV).
RESULTS: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed no significant changes in oatps gene expression upon infection with B. burgdorferi in unfed ticks. Synchronous infection of unfed nymphal

AIMS: To predict the risk of incursion of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in livestock in Europe introduced through immature Hyalomma marginatum ticks on migratory birds under current conditions and in the decade 2075-2084 under a climate-change scenario.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A spatial risk map of Europe comprising 14 282 grid cells (25 × 25 km) was constructed using three data sources: (i) ranges and abundances of four species of bird which migrate from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe each spring, namely Willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), Northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanth

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvato lugens Stat. (BPH) is the most devastating insect pest in rice fields. Outbreaks of BPH, which are resistant to many synthetic insecticides, can cause total rice crop loss. This research was done to evaluate the efficiency of extracts of mangosteen pericarp (Garcina mangostana L.) as an alternative control of BPH Thailand strain. Topical spraying was applied to various stages of nymphal and adult BPH to determine toxicity. An ethanol extract of mangosteen pericarp extract gave the best control of BPH, with LC50 of 4.5% w/v (r2 = 0.95) with 3rd instar BPH nymp

Ixodes scapularis vectors several pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease. Nymphal and larval stages, and the pathogens transmitted by I. scapularis are maintained in a zoonotic cycle involving rodent reservoir hosts, predominantly Peromyscus leucopus. Humans are not reservoir hosts, however, accidental encounters of infected ticks with humans, results in pathogen transmission to the human host. Laboratory models of non-reservoir hosts such as guinea pigs develop a strong immune response to tick salivary proteins and reject ticks upon repeated tick infestations. Ane

Lyme borreliosis is a vector-borne disease transmitted through the bite of ticks infected by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group, including B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii, and B. garinii. The goal of the present study was to detect Borrelia species in ticks infesting wild Korean water deer (KWD; Hydropotes inermis Swinhoe), using molecular and genotypic analyses. In total, 48 ticks were collected from KWD, all of which were morphologically identified as Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann that is dominant in Korea. Nested PCR was performed to detect the Borrelia-specific 5S (rrf)-23S

Relapsing fever (RF) spirochetes colonize and are transmitted to mammals primarily by Ornithodoros ticks, and little is known regarding the pathogen's life cycle in the vector. To further understand vector colonization and transmission of RF spirochetes, Borrelia turicatae expressing a green fluorescent protein (GFP) marker (B. turicatae-gfp) was generated. The transformants were evaluated during the tick-mammal infectious cycle, from the third nymphal instar to adult stage. B. turicatae-gfp remained viable for at least 18 months in starved fourth-stage nymphal ticks, and the studies indicated

The paper reports the prevalence and geographical distribution of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) and its genospecies in 12,221 questing Ixodes ricinus ticks collected at 183 locations from all the 41 counties of Romania. The unfed ticks were examined for the presence of B. burgdorferi s.l. by PCR targeting the intergenic spacer 5S-23S. Reverse line blot hybridization (RLB) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis were performed for identification of B. burgdorferi genospecies. The overall prevalence of infection was 1.4%, with an average local prevalence between 0.7

BACKGROUND: Amblyomma sculptum is the main vector implicated in the transmission of Rickettsia rickettsii in southeastern Brazil, where capybaras are known to be the main amplifying hosts of this pathogen. Interestingly, many areas inhabited by large populations of capybaras and A. sculptum remain free of R. rickettsii, suggesting that other drivers may be involved in the pathogen perpetuation. A. sculptum frequently occurs in sympatry with Amblyomma dubitatum ticks, sharing the same hosts with them. Considering that A. dubitatum ticks are frequently infected with Rickettsia bellii, a possible

Understanding the ecological drivers of tick abundance is crucial to mitigate the growing risk of tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in Japan. This study investigates how mammal community composition and seasonality affect the abundance of questing ticks in mountainous forests of Gifu Prefecture, a border region of the SFTS endemic zone. Camera traps were used to monitor mammal species, and questing ticks were collected monthly via flagging along transects in 10 forest plots during 2021-2022. We recorded 14 mammal species including small-sized mammal

The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is an important human pathogen that causes tick-borne encephalitis, a potentially fatal neurological disease. Human infections occur through tick bites or after the consumption of raw milk products from infected animals, causing alimentary outbreaks representing a significant public health problem in Slovakia. In the present study, a total of 1029 ruminant sera (from 672 sheep and 357 goats) from 18 localities, collected in Slovakia during 2017-2019 were initially screened for TBEV-specific antibodies by ELISA, and 98 (9.5 %) of them were confirmed as p

Ticks serve as significant vectors for over 100 pathogens, many of which pose serious health risks to humans. Türkiye's diverse tick species and ideal ecological conditions facilitate their proliferation. Following the emergence of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) epidemic in 2004, tick-borne diseases have become a critical public health concern. This systematic review was conducted to identify the dominant tick genera and species responsible for human bites and tick-borne diseases. PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, Medline, Tübitak TR Dizin, Dergi Park databases were searche

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that plays an important role in animal and plant development. Among the diverse types of DNA methylation modifications, methylation of cytosines catalyzed by DNA cytosine methyltransferases (DNMTs) is the most common. Recently, we characterized DNA methyltransferase genes including HlDnmt1 and HlDnmt from the Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis. However, the dynamic expression and functions of these DNMTs at different developmental stages and feeding statuses of the important vector tick H. longicornis remain unknown.

Arthropod vectors are responsible for a multitude of human and animal diseases affecting poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Their control still relies on chemical agents, despite growing evidence of insecticide resistance and environmental health concerns. Biorational agents, such as the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, might be an alternative for vector control. Recently, the M. anisopliae isolate ICIPE 7 has been developed into a commercial product in Kenya for control of ticks on cattle. We were interested in assessing the potential of controlling not only ticks but also

The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) is a major pest threatening global rice production, significantly reducing yields annually. As N. lugens increasingly develops resistance to conventional control methods, such as chemical pesticides, there is an urgent need for innovative and sustainable pest management strategies. Cleavage and Polyadenylation Specificity Factor 30 (CPSF30) is a key protein involved in mRNA 3' end processing, yet its function in N. lugens remains poorly understood. This study aims to elucidate the role of CPSF30 in the growth and development of N. lugens and evaluate
