Hydrophobic nano-calcium superphosphate (NPS1) is a novel nano-fertilizer that has shown great potential for enhancing plant growth and suppressing foliar diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. We investigated the responses of grape leaves and phyllosphere microbiota to NPS1 under both open-field and rain-shelter cultivation systems. NPS1 application significantly reduced leaf wetness duration and the disease severity of downy and powdery mildew, increased leaf-associated phosphorus retention, which remained elevated at later sampling stages, while enhancing

Citrus pomace represents a sustainable yet underutilized source of dietary fibers. This study investigated whether alkaline hydrogen peroxide-xylanase sequential modification could enhance the prebiotic functionality of citrus peel and pulp pomace fibers. Relative to native fibers, sequential modification significantly increased soluble dietary fiber content (from ∼10% to ∼31%), reduced lignin encapsulation, and created porous, cracked surface morphologies that enhanced enzyme accessibility and binding capacity. Eight fiber substrates (native and modified peel/pulp) were evaluated through simu

This study explores the production of bioplastic films from sugar cane bagasse, wood pulp waste, and boxboard waste using a three-step, sustainable process. First, cellulose was extracted from the biomass through a deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment system composed of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and oxalic acid (ChCl-EG-OA), which effectively removed lignin and enabled an efficient alkaline treatment for hemicellulose removal. Among the biomass sources, sugar cane bagasse yielded the highest cellulose content (72.86%), followed by wood pulp waste (43.82%) and boxboard waste (38.81

BACKGROUND: Vanillin is the most abundant volatile compound in natural vanilla extract and the primary metabolite from an economic perspective. Natural vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world and the most profitable crop adapted to the warm tropics. Despite its global popularity, vanilla is mainly cultivated from vegetatively propagated clones and insufficient modern plant breeding has been achieved. One of the breeding objectives is to increase the vanillin concentration in the cured vanilla capsules. The vanillin biosynthesis pathway has not been thoroughly deciphered and mul

Sustainable strategies to reduce Cd accumulation in wheat grown on Cd-contaminated alkaline soils remain limited. Here, we developed mercapto-functionalized carbon dots (SH-CDs) from Salvia miltiorrhiza biomass via a solvent-free ball milling approach with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. SH-CDs exhibited superior Cd2+ adsorption capacity (35.9 mg·g-1), primarily attributed to the strong affinity of surface-bound mercapto (-SH) groups, as confirmed by DFT calculations. SH-CDs applied via soil irrigation (800 mg·L-1) and foliar spraying (1 mg·mL-1) effectively reduced Cd content in wheat grain

Green synthesized iron/manganese nanoparticles (Fe/Mn NPs), acted as an exogenous promoter to enhance the lignin-degrading bacteria Comamonas testosteroni FJ17 resulting in more efficient removal of bisphenol A (BPA). Batch experiments demonstrated that removal efficiency of BPA via cells at a BPA concentration of 10 mg·L-1 increased by 20.9 % when exposed to 100 mg·L-1 Fe/Mn NPs after 48 h (93.63 %) relative to an unexposed control group (72.70 %). TEM and 3D-EEM analysis confirmed that the cell membrane thickness increased from 47 to 80 nm under Fe/Mn NPs exposure, and the TB-EPS secretion w

Although maintaining/improving soil organic matter (SOM) quantity through utilizing organic amendments (OAs) is a productive practice, information on OA components contributing to long-term SOM accumulation in agricultural soils remains meager. Hence, we examined soil samples from a long-term experiment with different fertilizer managements, including no fertilizer (NF), chemical fertilizer (CF) only (CF), bark compost plus CF (BC + CF), coffee residue compost plus CF (CRC + CF), cattle manure compost plus CF (CMC + CF), and cattle manure compost (CMC) or sewage sludge compost (SSC) alone at a

Biochar and hydrochar have garnered widespread attention owing to their excellent performance in environmental remediation, carbon sequestration, and resource utilization from biowaste. Studies on the release potential of dissolved organic matter (DOM) have been limited, and the distinction between biochar and hydrochar remains unclear. In this study, pine sawdust was utilized as a model precursor with the aim of comparing the release quantity, components, and properties of DOM from biochar (BDOM) and hydrochar (HDOM) under various simulated conditions. The amount of DOM released by hydrochar

Type 2 diabetes, a global health concern has been considered as major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Hinokinin, an emerging bioactive lignin, is reported to show wide range of pharmacological activities. However, the protective role and mechanisms of Hinokinin against type 2 diabetes-mediated cardiotoxicity are still remains unknown. An experimental type 2 diabetic mice model was created by treating animals with high fat diet for four weeks and intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg body weight). Post-type 2 diabetic induction, animals orally treated with Hinokinin (20

Conventional binders in the particleboards formulation involve use of formaldehyde resins. Epidemiologic studies show that formaldehyde is carcinogenic. Efforts to reduce formaldehyde emissions by use of scavengers has not been proven to reduce the emission. Molecular bonding of biobased adhesive molecules with lignocellulose materials provides an alternative way of producing composite material. In this study, maize stalk (MS), rice husks (RH) and sugarcane bagasse (SB) were used as sources of lignocellulose materials for particleboard formulation. SB, MS and RH were collected from their respe

The phenylpropanoid pathway leads to the production of many important plant secondary metabolites including lignin, chlorogenic acids, flavonoids, and phenolic glycosides. Early studies have demonstrated that flavonoid biosynthesis is transcriptionally regulated, often by a MYB, bHLH, and WDR transcription factor complex. In poplar, several R2R3 MYB transcription factors are known to be involved in flavonoid biosynthesis. Previous work determined that poplar MYB134 and MYB115 are major activators of the proanthocyanidin pathway, and also induce the expression of repressor-like MYB transcriptio

BACKGROUND: Information on the bioavailability of the essential mineral Mg2+ is sparse.
OBJECTIVE/METHOD: Evaluation of the present knowledge on factors influencing the bioavailability and intestinal absorption of Mg2+.
RESULTS: Mg2+ is absorbed via a paracellular passive and a transcellular active pathway that involves TRPM6/7 channel proteins. The bioavailability of Mg2+ varies within a broad range, depending on the dose, the food matrix, and enhancing and inhibiting factors. Dietary factors impairing Mg2+ up-take include high doses of other minerals, partly fermentable fibres (e.g., hemic

Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive beetle native to Asia that infests and kills ash (Fraxinus spp.) in North America. Previous experiments indicated that larvae feeding on co-evolved, resistant Manchurian ash (F. mandshurica) have increased antioxidant and quinone-protective enzyme activities compared to larvae feeding on susceptible North American species. Here, we examined mechanisms of host-generated oxidative and quinone-based stress and other putative defenses in Manchurian ash and the closely related and chemically similar, but susceptible, black ash (F. nigra), with and without exog

Fungi contribute extensively to a wide range of ecosystem processes, including decomposition of organic carbon, deposition of recalcitrant carbon, and transformations of nitrogen and phosphorus. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge about physiological and morphological traits of fungi that directly influence these processes, and we describe the functional genes that encode these traits. In addition, we synthesize information from 157 whole fungal genomes in order to determine relationships among selected functional genes within fungal taxa. Ecosystem-related traits varied most at r

Epidemiologic studies of cardiovascular mortality rates in different countries have suggested that dietary fiber may play a protective role. Within a similar population, a large intake of fiber is associated with a lower relative risk of death from coronary heart disease. Dietary fiber may be separated into at least two types: insoluble, which includes cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin; and soluble, including pectin and gums. Laxative effects appear to predominate with insoluble fibers such as wheat bran, with little change in plasma lipid levels in most studies. Pectin, guar gum, and oat b

Lignocellulosic residues represent a promising low-cost feedstock for the sustainable production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), although their integration into high-value biomedical applications remains limited. This work reports an integrated approach for the valorization of cardoon root biomass into poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) and its subsequent application as a nanocarrier for docetaxel delivery. Cardoon roots were subjected to cascade fractionation followed by deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based pretreatment to enhance lignin removal while preserving the carbohyd

Sodium (Na) and potassium (K) have comparable crustal abundances and similar physicochemical properties. However, due to the predominance of NaCl over KCl in natural salinity, most studies on plant salt responses have focused on NaCl, leaving responses to KCl salinity largely unexplored. To compare plant responses to Na and K salts, the euhalophyte Salicornia europaea was grown under equimolar (100 mM) NaCl and KCl treatments. NaCl salinity enhanced plant dry biomass, succulence, water relations, and the accumulation of organic osmolytes, whereas KCl salinity induced defence responses, lignin

Macrophyte-derived organic carbon potentially contributes 66-85% of carbon turnover in lake wetlands. However, the carbon and nutrient fate of its debris decomposition remain elusive, particularly under extreme hydrological regimes. Here, we conducted a 150-day aquatic mesocosm experiment simulating the decomposition of Phragmites australis debris to explore how organ-specific structural traits (leaves, stems, and roots) interact with inundation conditions (Floating, Submerged) to affect debris decomposition and aquatic C release, as well as nutrient dynamics. Our results demonstrate that debr

Classical extensins (CEXTs) are hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins that belong to the extensin superfamily and constitute critical structural components of the plant cell wall. However, the genome-wide characterization and functional role of CEXTs in cotton fiber development remain very limited. Here, we conducted a comprehensive comparative genomic analysis across four Gossypium species and identified a total of 30 CEXT genes, which were systematically classified into four evolutionary lineages (Groups A-D) based on analyses of phylogenetic relationship and gene structural organization.
