Spite is an understudied construct that has been virtually ignored within the personality, social, and clinical psychology literatures. This study introduces a self-report Spitefulness Scale to assess individual differences in spitefulness. The scale was initially tested on a large sample of 946 college students and cross-validated on a national sample of 297 adults. The scale was internally consistent in both samples. Factor analysis supported a 1-factor solution for the initial pool of 31 items. Item response theory analysis was used to identify the best performing of the original 31 items i

INTRODUCTION: Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity is related to childhood disruptive behavior disorders and to exposure to abuse and neglect. This study explores the relationship of diurnal salivary cortisol levels with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and caregiver attitudes toward physical punishment among boys in Mongolia.
METHODS: Salivary cortisol was collected in the home or institution 4 times daily for 4 days from 46 boys, aged 4-10 years, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Caregivers rated child disruptive behavior symptoms, attitudes toward physical punishment, and communit

Defects in the TUSC3 gene have been identified in individuals with nonsyndromic autosomal recessive intellectual disability (ARID), due to either point mutations or intragenic deletions. We report on a boy with a homozygous microdeletion 8p22, sizing 203 kb, encompassing the first exon of the TUSC3 gene, detected by SNP-array analysis (Human Gene Chip 6.0; Affymetrix). Both nonconsanguineous parents come from a small Sicilian village and were heterozygous carriers of the microdeletion. The propositus had a few dysmorphic features and a moderate cognitive impairment. Verbal communication was im

BACKGROUND: We previously hypothesised that the early development of psychopathy is associated with a failure to attend to the eyes of attachment figures, and we have presented preliminary data from a parent-child 'love' scenario in support of this. Here, we confirm the association in a larger sample and test mechanisms of impaired eye contact during expressions of love in control and behaviourally disturbed children.
METHODS: Oppositional defiant disorder children, assessed for callous-unemotional (CU) traits, and controls, were observed in a brief interaction task where the mother was asked

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate putative moderator, predictor, and treatment parameter variables in relation to three outcomes in a clinical trial that compared a modular protocol for on-site, nurse-administered intervention (PONI) and enhanced usual care (EUC) for pediatric behavioral problems in primary care.
METHODS: Patients were 163 clinically referred children for behavior problems in six primary care offices. PONI consisted of seven treatment modules adapted from prior treatment trials with this population, whereas EUC involved a facilitated referral to a community provider. Outcome measures w

Objective: The Diagnostic Infant and Preschool Assessment was revised to include Likert ratings (DIPA-L) to give a broader range of severity ratings that may have greater utility for clinical and research purposes. In addition, the instrument was updated for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM-5), and two types of Likert ratings-frequency versus problem intensity-were explored for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Concurrent construct validation and test-retest reliability were examined for the five most common disorders seen in very young children

INTRODUCTION: The 2015 National Mental Health Survey aimed to expand our knowledge about the real mental state of children in Colombia, taking into account the fact that most mental disorders in adults begin during childhood or adolescence. It is essential to have an improved knowledge of the magnitude of this issue and to design timely interventions that reduce long term complications.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of the disorders in the last 12 months and 30 days according to the DSM-IV, as well as to collect data about social and demographic variables.

PURPOSE: To examine whether family history of unprovoked seizures is associated with behavioral disorders in epilepsy probands, thereby supporting the hypothesis of shared underlying genetic susceptibility to these disorders.
METHODS: We conducted an analysis of the 308 probands with childhood onset epilepsy from the Connecticut Study of Epilepsy with information on first-degree family history of unprovoked seizures and of febrile seizures whose parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) at the 9-year follow-up. We introduce an overlapping cohort sequential longitudinal study of behavioral development and psychopathology in a representative sample of 1412 pairs of twins aged 8 through 16 years. Multiple phenotypic assessments involve a full psychiatric interview with each child and each parent, and supplementary parental, teacher, and child interview material and questionnaires. For the first wave of assessments, the numbers of reported DSM-III-R symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Overanxious Disorder (OAD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Diso

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that often coexists with other neurodevelopmental disorders. The intricate comorbidity of ADHD with depression, Tourette syndrome (TS), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents substantial challenges in the screening, diagnosis, and management of these conditions. The aim of this study was to utilize big data-derived brain charts as an objective standard to assess brain development, comparing regional brain development differences between children with pure ADHD and those with comorbidities,

OBJECTIVE: Stimulant treatment improves impulse control among children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Decreased aggression often accompanies stimulant pharmacotherapy, suggesting that impulsiveness is integral to aggressive behavior in these children. However, children with high callous-unemotional (CU) traits and proactive aggression may benefit less from ADHD pharmacotherapy, because their aggressive behavior seems more purposeful and deliberate. This study's objective was to determine whether pretreatment CU traits and proactive aggression affect treatment outcomes am

OBJECTIVE: To study the features of various subtypes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) in children.
METHODS: Sex composition, risk factors, comorbidities, intelligence quotient and behavioral problems were investigated in 175 children with ADHD who met the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder Criteria (DSM-IV). The children were classified into three groups: ADHD predominantly inattentive (ADHD-I, n=82), ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive (ADHD-HI, n=24) and ADHD combined type (ADHD-C, n=69).
RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the sex compos

The recent development of low-risk imaging technologies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have had a significant impact on the investigation of psychopathologies in children and adolescents. This review considers what we can infer from fMRI work regarding the development of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). We make two central assumptions that are grounded in the empirical literature. First, the diagnoses of CD and ODD identify individuals with heterogeneous pathologies; that is, different developmental pathologies can receive a CDD or ODD diag
