Accuracy and replicability of identifying eyelid tremor as an indicator of recent cannabis smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis intoxication may increase the risk of motor vehicle crashes. However, reliable methods of assessing cannabis intoxication are limited. The presence of eyelid tremors is among the signs of cannabis use identified under the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Our objectives were to assess the accuracy and replicability of identifying eyelid tremor as an indicator of recent cannabis smoking using a blinded, controlled study design. METHODS: Adult subjects (N = 103) were recruited into three groups based on their

Development of a Culturally Adapted Smartphone App (IndigeQuit) Designed to Help American Indian and Alaska Native People Quit Commercial Cigarettes: User-Centered Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the colonization of tobacco plants by European settlers and the subsequent intensive marketing of commercial tobacco products to American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in the United States, commercial cigarette smoking accounts for half of all deaths among AI/AN people. Limited awareness, access to treatment, and the absence of culturally relevant, effective smoking cessation interventions contribute to these high death rates. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to culturally adapt iCanQuit, a smartphone smoking cessation app proven efficacious for the general populat

Tobacco, nicotine, and cannabis use and exposure in an Australian Indigenous population during pregnancy: A protocol to measure parental and foetal exposure and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Australian National Perinatal Data Collection collates all live and stillbirths from States and Territories in Australia. In that database, maternal cigarette smoking is noted twice (smoking <20 weeks gestation; smoking >20 weeks gestation). Cannabis use and other forms of nicotine use, for example vaping and nicotine replacement therapy, are nor reported. The 2021 report shows the rate of smoking for Australian Indigenous mothers was 42% compared with 11% for Australian non-Indigenous mothers. Evidence shows that Indigenous babies exposed to maternal smoking have a higher rate

Chronic intermittent electronic cigarette exposure induces cardiac dysfunction and atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein-E knockout mice.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), also known as electronic nicotine delivery systems, are a popular alternative to conventional nicotine cigarettes, both among smokers and those who have never smoked. In spite of the widespread use of e-cigarettes and the proposed detrimental cardiac and atherosclerotic effects of nicotine, the effects of e-cigarettes on these systems are not known. In this study, we investigated the cardiovascular and cardiac effects of e-cigarettes with and without nicotine in apolipoprotein-E knockout (ApoE-/-) mice. We developed an e-cigarette exposure model that deliv

Alterations in Vascular Function Associated With the Use of Combustible and Electronic Cigarettes.

Background Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have been proposed as a potential harm reduction tool for combustible cigarette smokers. The majority of adult e-cigarette users continue to smoke combustible cigarettes and are considered dual users. The vascular impact of e-cigarettes remains incompletely defined. Methods and Results We examined the association of e-cigarette use with measures of vascular function and tonometry, preclinical measures of cardiovascular injury. As part of the CITU (Cardiovascular Injury due to Tobacco Use) study, we performed noninvasive vascular function testing

Associations Between Product Type and Intensity of Tobacco and Cannabis Co-use on the Same Day Among Young Adult Smokers: Smartphone-Based Daily-Diary Study.

BACKGROUND: Co-use of tobacco and cannabis is highly prevalent among young US adults. Same-day co-use of tobacco and cannabis (ie, use of both substances on the same day) may increase the extent of use and negative health consequences among young adults. However, much remains unknown about same-day co-use of tobacco and cannabis, in part due to challenges in measuring this complex behavior. Nuanced understanding of tobacco and cannabis co-use in terms of specific products and intensity (ie, quantity of tobacco and cannabis use within a day) is critical to inform prevention and intervention eff

Factors influencing perceptions of electronic cigarette and nicotine replacement therapy use among French smokers experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Smokers experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage have higher smoking rates and lower quit success compared to the general population. While nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are effective smoking cessation aids, their use in this population is limited. We examine perceptions of NRT and e-cigarettes among low-income smokers. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from 167 low-income smokers interested in reducing or quitting smoking but not currently using e-cigarettes, enrolled in the French STOP trial, a randomized controlled trial evaluating

The Impact of Various Tax Bases and Rates on Cannabis Consumption Among US Adults Who use Recreational Cannabis.

As an increasing number of states legalize recreational cannabis, it is increasingly important to understand the optimal tax design for recreational cannabis. Currently, various tax bases (weight, potency, price) and rates are used. However, the empirical evidence on the impact of tax-related attributes (pre-tax prices, tetrahydrocannabinol [THC] levels, tax bases, and tax rates) and their interactions on consumption is limited. To address this evidence gap, this study utilizes a split-sample volumetric choice experiment to understand the impact of pre-tax prices, tax bases, tax rates, and THC

Adolescents Caught Between the Temptation and the Habit of Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a stage characterized by behaviors that pose significant risks to long-term health, and smoking is one of the most prominent risks among young people. This period is also considered a stage with an increased need for interaction and acceptance from peer groups, which can lead adolescents to take on new risks. In this context, smoking, in various forms (cigarettes, cigarillos, vape/e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, etc.), is a major public health issue among young people. Tobacco use, perceived as a socializing factor, provides adolescents with the opportunity to integra
