The effects of online facial muscle training with resonance vocalization on mental health in postpartum women: A single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems among expectant and nursing mothers also affect their infants, partners, and families. While physical activity is a potential method for preventing postpartum depression (PPD), it is difficult for postpartum women to find the time for physical exercise. A recent study reported that improving communication between expectant couples can be used as a preventive intervention for PPD, and a systematic review and meta-analysis recently reported decreased facial emotional expressivity in individuals with different non-psychotic disorders. Therefore, we focused on fa

Predicting Housing Related Delayed Discharge from Mental Health Inpatient Units: A Case Control Study.

The aims of this study were to identify factors that a) predict whether people experience housing related discharge delay (HRDD) from a mental health inpatient unit; and b) predict the length of HRDD for people affected. By identifying the groups most affected by HRDD, clinicians and policy makers can prioritise and address barriers to timely discharge at both an individual and systemic level. A case control study using a detailed medical record review was conducted in one Australian mental health service. Demographic, clinical, contextual and systemic variables were collected for patients wit

Pimozide for schizophrenia or related psychoses.

BACKGROUND: Pimozide was first formulated in the late 1960s and continues to be marketed for the care of those with schizophrenia or related psychoses such as delusional disorder. Pimozide is generally well tolerated apart from extrapyramidal side effects. It has, however, been associated with cardiotoxicity and sudden unexplained deaths and electrocardiogram monitoring is now required before and during its use. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of pimozide for people with schizophrenia, non-affective psychotic mental illness and delusional disorder in terms of clinical, social and economic o

Multivariate Resting-State Functional Connectivity Features Linked to Transdiagnostic Psychopathology in Early Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Early psychosis (EP) is characterized by neurobiological changes, including alterations in resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC). We now understand that symptoms and neural changes may overlap across EP diagnostic categories. However, the relationship between RSFC patterns and transdiagnostic symptom dimensions remains poorly understood. METHODS: We used partial least squares correlation to examine multivariate relationships between whole-brain RSFC and clinical symptoms in 124 patients with EP (ages 16-35 years) diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or a

Folie à Deux in the Setting of COVID-19 Quarantine.

We relay the case of a middle-aged male and his mother, an elderly female, who presented with folie à deux in the context of shared delusions of persecution and somatization during the COVID-19 quarantine period. The delusions were described as electric microwave shocks being transmitted to their internal organs by neighbors, followed by somatic symptoms of palpitations, headaches, and a shock-like perception. To the best of our knowledge, there have not been any reports that describe the development of folie à deux in the setting of the COVID-19 quarantine. Folie à deux may be defined as delu

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of cortical asymmetry in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BPD) exhibit motor, perceptual, and cognitive disturbances involving predominantly right hemisphere dysfunction. This asymmetry has been used to advance the hypothesis that the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder may be related to disturbances of the right cerebral hemisphere. We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine hemispheric asymmetries in manic and depressed BPD. A secondary goal of the study was to examine effects of psychotropic medications on blood volume changes in the motor cortices. METHODS: We studied 18 right-handed

A mediation model on how PTSD symptoms are related to psychotic experiences in survivors of the ongoing Gaza war 2023-2024.

BACKGROUND: Research allowing the recognition of significant associations between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and psychotic experiences (PEs), and the identification of potential modifiable factors affecting their trajectories of co-occurrence is paramount for improving mental health of mental health of war victims. However, there remains a dearth of evidence regarding trauma, PTSD and psychosis in regions exposed to prolonged conflict and oppression. Our study aimed to: (1) investigate the direct bidirectional connections between PTSD symptoms and PEs in a sample of adults

Dexamphetamine increased speech and visual unimodal illusions in healthy participants without affecting temporal binding window.

OBJECTIVE: Stimuli received beyond a very short timeframe, known as temporal binding windows (TBWs), are perceived as separate events. In previous audio-visual multisensory integration (McGurk effect) studies, widening of TBWs has been observed in people with schizophrenia. The present study aimed to determine if dexamphetamine could increase TBWs in unimodal auditory and unimodal visual illusions that may have some validity as experimental models for auditory and visual hallucinations in psychotic disorders. METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, counter-balanced crossover design with

Negative effects of accompanying psychiatric disturbances on functionality among adolescents with chronic migraine.

BACKGROUND: Chronic migraine is a condition with gradually increasing prevalence among adolescents which causes severe headaches resulting in functionality loss. Factors contributing to migraine becoming chronic and negatively affecting quality of life in adolescence are still unclear. Parallel with these, we aimed to examine the effect of psychiatric symptoms on headache severity and functionality loss among adolescents with chronic migraine. METHODS: We evaluated features of 50 adolescents who were diagnosed with chronic migraine according to International Classification of Headache Disorde

Changes in drug-use behaviors among people who use drugs with comorbid psychiatric disorders across the COVID-19 pandemic: a three-phase longitudinal cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially affected people who use drugs (PWUD) with comorbid psychiatric disorders. Lockdowns, shifts in drug markets, and fear of infection may have altered drug-use patterns. This prospective study examined changes in drug-use behaviors among PWUD with comorbid psychiatric disorders and identified factors associated with these changes across three distinct phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cohort of adult PWUD with ICD-10-defined comorbid psychiatric disorders was followed longitudinally from March 2021 to January 2024. Drug-use behaviors we

Gendering psychosis: the illness of Zelda Fitzgerald.

Psychiatric textbooks tend to describe psychosis as it is experienced by men. The well-documented illness of Zelda Fitzgerald illustrates the feminine side of psychosis. The distinctive features of Zelda's illness--its specific precipitants, the timing of its onset, the discontinuities in its course, the pronounced mood swings, the preservation of intellect and of agency, the maintenance of human ties, the association of flare-ups with immune and hormonal changes, the responsiveness to treatment, the lifelong creativity and productivity--show the female side of psychotic illness, one that is r

COVID-19 psychosis versus psychosis due to cytotoxic lesion of the corpus callosum (CLOCC): A case report and review.

BACKGROUND: Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum syndrome (CLOCC) is an inflammatory disorder caused by various etiologies such as medications, malignancies, seizure, metabolic abnormalities, and infections, especially COVID-19. It presents on MRI as an area of restricted diffusion in the corpus callosum. We present a case of psychosis and CLOCC in a patient with mild active COVID-19 infection. CASE: A 25-year-old male with a history of asthma and unclear past psychiatric history presented to the emergency room with shortness of breath, chest pain, and disorganized behavior. His-COVID-19

The Role and Clinical Correlates of Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in People With Psychosis.

Traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress are highly prevalent in people with psychosis, increasing symptom burden, decreasing quality of life and moderating treatment response. A range of post-traumatic sequelae have been found to mediate the relationship between trauma and psychotic experiences, including the "traditional" symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The International Classification of Diseases-11th Edition recognizes a more complex post-traumatic presentation, complex PTSD (cPTSD), which captures both the characteristic symptoms of PTSD alongside more pervasive

All's well that ends well? Long-term course of a patient with anti-amphiphysin associated limbic encephalitis.

Anti-amphiphysin associated limbic encephalitis (LE) is a paraneoplastic autoimmune disorder. The initial clinical presentation features seizures, cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. We present the case of a 25-year-old female patient hospitalized after four consecutive tonic-clonic seizures, followed by confusion, psychotic symptoms, nonconvulsive seizure series, and severe global amnesia. Diagnostic workup revealed anti-amphiphysin associated LE without a tumor. MRI and PET indicated inflammatory processes affecting the bilateral mesial temporal structures more pronounced on the left si

A Wolf in Hiding: Epilepsy and Post-ictal Psychosis As Unrecognized Presenting Features of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects multiple organ systems. Many patients present with neurological and psychiatric signs and symptoms at some point in the course of the disease. Here, we present a patient with neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE) who presented with long-standing and difficult-to-control epileptic seizures and post-ictal psychotic symptoms prior to the diagnosis of SLE. A 39-year-old patient with a ten-year history of uncontrolled epileptic seizures despite multiple medications and recent diagnosis of chronic kidney disease presented to the

Interaction between childhood adversity and functional polymorphisms in the dopamine pathway on first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: There is consistent evidence of a cumulative relationship between childhood adversity and psychosis, with number of adversities experienced increasing the probability of psychosis onset. It is possible that genetic factors moderate the association between childhood adversity and psychosis, potentially by influencing how an individual reacts biologically and/or psychologically following exposure to adversity, in such a way as to set them off on the path to psychosis. However, identifying the specific genetic variants involved and how they interact with childhood adversity remains ch

Immune system: a possible nexus between cannabinoids and psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Endocannabinoid system is involved in the regulation of the brain-immune axis. Cannabis consumption is related with the development, course, and severity of psychosis. The epidemiological evidence for increased occurrence of immunological alterations in patients with psychosis has not been sufficiently addressed. The aim of this review is to establish whether there is any scientific evidence of the influence of cannabinoids on aspects of immunity that affect susceptibility to psychotic disorder induction. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and ISI Web of Kno

[Psycho-immunological mechanisms in schizophrenia].

Immune alterations in schizophrenia have been described for decades. Both the unspecific and specific arms of the immune system seem to be involved. Several lines of evidence support that an infectious and/or autoimmune process might play a role in the etiopathogenesis of a group of psychotic disorders. Signs of inflammation and microglia activation in postmortem brains, in the CSF, the dysfunctional Blood Brain Barrier, the increased retroviral activity, the proof of antibodies against brain structures, the signs of T cell activation and the imbalance of cytokine levels in serum, in CSF in in
