A Retrospective Cohort Study of Implantable Pulse Generator Surgical Site Infections After Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery With an Antibacterial Envelope.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery is an established treatment for many patients with neurologic disease, and a common complication of DBS is surgical site infection (SSI). In 2016, neurosurgeons at our institution began enclosing implantable pulse generators (IPGs) within fully absorbable, antibacterial envelopes in patients who underwent initial DBS implantation. We sought to determine whether the use of antibacterial envelopes reduced IPG-related SSIs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all adult patients who underwent initial DBS implantati

Prophylactic Intrawound Vancomycin Powder in Minimally Invasive Spine Stabilization May Cause an Acute Inflammatory Response.

Introduction Surgical site infections (SSIs) with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are serious complications of spinal instrumentation surgery. Many spine surgeons are concerned that using prophylactic vancomycin powder will lead to certain risks: the development of multidrug-resistant pathogens, anaphylactic reactions, and organ toxicity. Minimally invasive spine stabilization (MISt) is associated with shorter operation times and less blood loss and may therefore require the use of less vancomycin powder, which may reduce these risks. This retrospective comparative study of patient

Narrowing antibiotic spectrum of activity for trauma-associated pneumonia through the use of a disease-specific antibiogram.

BACKGROUND: Organism susceptibilities for trauma-associated pneumonia (TAP) differ from those in other patient populations, including the critically ill. The purpose of this study was to identify common organisms and their susceptibilities in the respiratory isolates of trauma patients diagnosed with pneumonia within the first 7 days of hospital admission, and to create a TAP-specific disease-state antibiogram to guide empiric antibiotic therapy in this patient population. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of adult trauma patients with pneumonia admitted between September 1, 2015

Staphylococcus aureus: A predominant cause of surgical site infections in a rural healthcare setup of Uttarakhand.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent the second most common type of healthcare-associated infections and remain a relatively common postoperative complication and the most common reason for readmission after surgery. SSIs have dire implications for the surgeon, patient, and institution which often require prolonged treatment, impose an economic burden and double the risk of patient mortality. Staphylococcus aureus is currently the most common cause of SSIs causing as many as 37% of cases of SSIs in community hospitals with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) of particular

Detection of Escherichia coli and associated β-lactamases genes from diabetic foot ulcers by multiplex PCR and molecular modeling and docking of SHV-1, TEM-1, and OXA-1 β-lactamases with clindamycin and piperacillin-tazobactam.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common and devastating complication in diabetes. Antimicrobial resistance mediated by extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) production by bacteria is considered to be a major threat for foot amputation. The present study deals with the detection of Escherichia coli and the prevalence of bla(TEM), bla(SHV) and bla(OXA) genes directly from biopsy and swab of foot ulcers of diabetic patients. In total, 116 DFU patients were screened, of which 42 suffering with severe DFUs were selected for this study. Altogether 16 E. coli strains were successfully isolated from bi

Eikenella corrodens in head and neck infections.

BACKGROUND: Eikenella corrodens (E. corrodens) is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacillus that originally was thought to be an attenuated and indigenous bacterium. In recent years, a number of reports have documented that E. corrodens can be a potential pathogen not only in immunocompromised patients but also in hosts with normal immunity. We herein study E. corrodens infections of the head and neck encountered in our department. METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients treated in our department for E. corrodens infections of the head and neck were retrospectively analyzed. Microbial s

[Antimicrobial activity of fosfomycin under various conditions against standard strains, beta-lactam resistant strains, and multidrug efflux system mutants].

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible benefit of fosfomycin (FOM) as prophylactic antibiotic in terms of antimicrobial activity and the potential of inducibility of beta-lactamase, compared with cefazolin, cefotiam, cefmetazole, and piperacillin that are commonly used as perioperative agents. The in vitro activity of FOM against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria using Mueller-Hinton agar or nutrient agar supplemented with glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) as tested medium increased within a range from 2 to 256 times the activity in the medium without G6P. However, the susceptibility of G
