Patterns of Mood and Personality Factors and Associations With STI/HIV-Related Drug and Sex Risk Among African American Male Inmates.

BACKGROUND: Research on the association between antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) with comorbid mental disorders and sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV risk among inmates is scant despite the high prevalence of psychopathology and of STI/HIV in this population. METHODS: We used baseline data from Project DISRUPT, a cohort study conducted among incarcerated African American men (n = 207), to measure associations between ASPD and STI/HIV risk. We also conducted latent class analyses (LCAs) to identify subgroups defined by ASPD with comorbid stress, depression, and borderline personal

Early onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder and associated comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have aimed to identify subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) based on their age of onset (AOO). Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCS disorders) such as tic disorders have been particularly associated with an early onset in some studies. However, subtypes of early- and late-onset OCD are unevenly determined, and the biological and the clinical validity of these subtypes are unknown. This study was undertaken to discriminate the subtypes of OCD in different AOO levels and to test the hypothesis that different AOO bands are associated with a differen

The role of loss of control eating in purging disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Purging Disorder (PD), an Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (APA, 2013), is characterized by recurrent purging in the absence of binge eating. Though objectively large binge episodes are not present, individuals with PD may experience a loss of control (LOC) while eating a normal or small amounts of food. The present study sought to examine the role of LOC eating in PD using archival data from 101 women with PD. METHOD: Participants completed diagnostic interviews and self-report questionnaires. Analyses examined the relationship between LOC eating and eating disorder feat

Does early emotional distress predict later child involvement in gambling?

OBJECTIVE: Younger people are engaging in gambling, with some showing excessive involvement. Although a consequence of gambling could be anxiety and depression, emotional distress could be a precursor to gambling involvement. This could reflect developmental proneness toward problem behaviour. We assessed whether early emotional distress directly influences later gambling or if it operates through an indirect pathway. METHODS: Using a prospective longitudinal design, an intentional subsample of children from the 1999 kindergarten cohort of the Montreal Longitudinal Preschool Study (Quebec) fr

Self-cutting and sexual risk among adolescents in intensive psychiatric treatment.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between self-cutting, sexual abuse, and psychological variables in predicting infrequent condom use among 293 adolescents in intensive psychiatric treatment. Logistic regression analyses indicated that being female, being Caucasian, having been sexually abused, and reporting less impulse control were predictive of self-cutting. Further analysis found that those who self-cut were three and a half times more likely to report infrequent condom use than those who did not self-cut, even after the analysis controlled for sexual abuse histor

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of lamotrigine for pathological skin picking: treatment efficacy and neurocognitive predictors of response.

Although a relatively common behavior, treatment data for pathological skin picking (PSP) are limited. The current study sought to examine the efficacy and tolerability of lamotrigine in adults with PSP and to examine neurocognitive predictors of treatment response. Thirty-two subjects (29 female subjects [90.6%]; mean age, 32.8 +/- 13.3 years) with PSP were treated in a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of lamotrigine as monotherapy. Baseline cognitive assessment comprised the stop signal and intradimensional/extradimensional set shift tasks. Lamotrigine dosing ranged

FDG-PET study in pathological gamblers. 1. Lithium increases orbitofrontal, dorsolateral and cingulate metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling affects 1-3% of the adult population, and has high comorbidity. Although mood stabilizers and serotonin reuptake inhibitors have shown some efficacy in the treatment of this condition, there is little known about how these pharmacological interventions work. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with pathological gambling, who met lifetime comorbid bipolar spectrum diagnoses, received baseline PET scans. Sixteen of these patients were entered into a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel group design trial of lithium, and received follow-up PET scans at 1

Long-term behavioural changes after unilateral stereotactic cingulotomy in a case of therapy-resistant alcohol dependence.

We report the case of a female patient who had undergone a unilateral stereotactical anterior cingulotomy (AC) 20 years previously because of refractory alcohol dependence. After AC, the drinking behaviour switched from a chronic to an episodic one with fast losses of control accompanied by abnormal oral impulse-control behaviour. Relapses were stress- but not cue-induced and followed by long-term intervals of abstinence. In addition to an intended lesion of the left dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), MR images showed additional lesions within the left caudate body and the dorsal medial t

The cross-national epidemiology of DSM-IV intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: This is the first cross-national study of intermittent explosive disorder (IED). METHOD: A total of 17 face-to-face cross-sectional household surveys of adults were conducted in 16 countries (n = 88 063) as part of the World Mental Health Surveys initiative. The World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 3.0) assessed DSM-IV IED, using a conservative definition. RESULTS: Lifetime prevalence of IED ranged across countries from 0.1 to 2.7% with a weighted average of 0.8%; 0.4 and 0.3% met criteria for 12-month and 30-day prevalence, respectively. S

[Attention and executive processes in neuropsychological rehabilitation of the visuospatial processes].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Cognitive deficits following lesions in parieto occipital areas tend to cause, among others, visuospatial and visuoperceptive alterations. The aim of this article is to examine the influence of others possible deficit over its rehabilitation. DEVELOPMENT: We discuss several patients who present visuospatial impairment after different brain injuries, not only those affecting the areas typically involved in these deficits, such as parieto occipital cortex. Rehabilitation was conducted on an individual basis in the brain injury unit of Beata Maria Ana hospital. Neurop

Subthalamic stimulation in Parkinson's disease: restoring the balance of motivated behaviours.

Addictions to dopaminergic drugs or to pleasant behaviours are frequent and potentially devastating neuropsychiatric disorders observed in Parkinson's disease. They encompass impulse control disorders, punding and dopamine dysregulation syndrome. A relationship with dopaminergic treatment is strongly suggested. Subthalamic stimulation improves motor complications and allows for drastic reductions in medication. This treatment might, therefore, be considered for patients with behavioural addictions, when attempts to reduce dopaminergic medication have failed. However, conflicting data have repo

Prevalence and heritability of compulsive hoarding: a twin study.

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive hoarding is a serious health problem for the sufferers, their families, and the community at large. It appears to be highly prevalent and to run in families. However, this familiality could be due to genetic or environmental factors. This study examined the prevalence and heritability of compulsive hoarding in a large sample of twins. METHOD: A total of 5,022 twins completed a validated measure of compulsive hoarding. The prevalence of severe hoarding was determined using empirically derived cutoffs. Genetic and environmental influences on compulsive hoarding were estima

Exacerbation of mood symptoms associated to primary and secondary carnitine deficiency: a case report.

Rarely screened in psychiatric patients, primary and/or secondary Carnitine deficiency could be influencing and/or mimicking the mood symptoms of our patient population. The brain and specifically neurons are highly vulnerable to impairments in oxidative metabolism, which can lead to neuronal cell death and disorders of neurotransmitters causing changes in cognition and behavior. For this reason, identification of this disorder is important since its treatment could result in symptom improvement and better quality of life of our patients. We present a case where exacerbation of mood symptoms w

Validity of the Externalizing Spectrum Inventory in a criminal offender sample: relations with disinhibitory psychopathology, personality, and psychopathic features.

The Externalizing Spectrum Inventory (ESI; Krueger, Markon, Patrick, Benning, & Kramer, 2007) provides a self-report based method for indexing a range of correlated problem behaviors and traits in the domain of deficient impulse control. The ESI organizes lower order behaviors and traits of this kind around higher order factors encompassing general disinhibitory proneness, callous-aggression, and substance abuse. In the current study, we used data from a male prisoner sample (N = 235) to evaluate the validity of ESI total and factor scores in relation to external criterion measures consisting

[Validation of the dialectal Arabic version of Barratt's impulsivity scale, the BIS-11].

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a symptom of several disorders such as personality disorder, bipolar disorder, suicidal behaviour, substance use disorders, schizophrenia...Forensic psychiatry is particularly concerned with impulsivity. It increases the risk of violence among clinical populations and figures in various instruments such as the HCR-20, the VRAG and the PCL-R to assess violence risk. It is one of many dimensions that can lead to aggressive behaviour among psychiatric patients. The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), in its 11th version, is a 30-item self-report instrument that helps a

Assessment and management of pathological and problem gambling among older adults.

The incidence of gambling among older adults has risen significantly over the last decade. Pathological and problem gambling disorders among older adults have devastating consequences including stress, alcohol abuse, loss of income and assets, treatment nonadherence, malnutrition, safety risks related to associated alcohol usage and financial losses, and increased psychiatric problems such as depression. This article reviews the theoretical frameworks and literature concerning gambling incidence, prevalence, behavior, diagnostic tools and interventional strategies for older adults, as well as

'A disease that makes criminals': encephalitis lethargica (EL) in children, mental deficiency, and the 1927 Mental Deficiency Act.

Encephalitis lethargica (EL) was an epidemic that spread throughout Europe and North America during the 1920s. Although it could affect both children and adults alike, there were a strange series of chronic symptoms that exclusively affected its younger victims: behavioural disorders which could include criminal propensities. In Britain, which had passed the Mental Deficiency Act in 1913, the concept of mental deficiency was well understood when EL appeared. However, EL defied some of the basic precepts of mental deficiency to such an extent that amendments were made to the Mental Deficiency A

Neuropsychological measures of attention and impulse control among 8-year-old children exposed prenatally to organochlorines.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported associations between organochlorines and behaviors related to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among boys and girls at 8 years of age using a teacher's rating scale for a birth cohort in New Bedford, Massachusetts (USA). OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to corroborate these findings using neuropsychological measures of inattentive and impulsive behaviors. METHODS: We investigated the association between cord serum polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) and attention and impulse control using a Continuous Perfo
