Hyperhomocysteinemia decreases bone blood flow.

Elevated plasma levels of homocysteine (Hcy), known as hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), are associated with osteoporosis. A decrease in bone blood flow is a potential cause of compromised bone mechanical properties. Therefore, we hypothesized that HHcy decreases bone blood flow and biomechanical properties. To test this hypothesis, male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with Hcy (0.67 g/L) in drinking water for 8 weeks. Age-matched rats served as controls. At the end of the treatment period, the rats were anesthetized. Blood samples were collected from experimental or control rats. Biochemical turn

Flow motion pattern differences in the forehead and forearm skin: Age-dependent alterations are not specific for Alzheimer's disease.

Oscillations in laser Doppler signals derived from the forehead and forearm skin were analyzed in 77 healthy probands from 4 various age groups (ranging between 15 and 77 years) and 22 late-onset sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. A characteristic pattern of oscillations in the microcirculatory blood flux ( approximately 8 cycles/min, 0.13 Hz) was observed in the forehead skin, the occurrence of which correlated inversely with age (r = 0.80). The occurrence of forehead vasomotion pattern was 100% in the teenagers, whereas it was significantly less in the elderly control subjects (32%)

Antenatal prediction of pulmonary hypoplasia by acceleration time/ejection time ratio of fetal pulmonary arteries by Doppler blood flow velocimetry.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a new method for the antenatal prediction of pulmonary hypoplasia by Doppler blood flow velocimetry. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred seventy-seven fetuses (160 normal fetuses and 17 fetuses with congenital anomalies that may affect fetal lung growth and/or development) were studied. Blood flow waveforms at the main branches of the pulmonary arteries were recorded by Doppler echocardiography from 20 to 39 weeks of gestation. The ratio of acceleration time to ejection time was calculated from the waveform as a parameter to predict pulmonary hypoplas

Turbulent Kinetic Energy Measurement Using Phase Contrast MRI for Estimating the Post-Stenotic Pressure Drop: In Vitro Validation and Clinical Application.

BACKGROUND: Although the measurement of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been introduced as an alternative index for quantifying energy loss through the cardiac valve, experimental verification and clinical application of this parameter are still required. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study is to verify MRI measurements of TKE by using a phantom stenosis with particle image velocimetry (PIV) as the reference standard. In addition, the feasibility of measuring TKE with MRI is explored. METHODS: MRI measurements of TKE through a phantom stenosis was

The effects of spinal anesthesia on cerebral blood flow in the very elderly.

BACKGROUND: Aging and disease may make elderly patients particularly susceptible to hypotension during spinal anesthesia. However, the impact of small-dose bupivacaine on cerebral hemodynamics is not known. In this study, we assessed the effects of spinal anesthesia on cerebral blood flow (CBF) in very elderly patients. METHODS: We prospectively studied 20 patients aged >75 yr who underwent open surgical repair of a hip fracture and compared them with a control group of patients younger than 60 yr. Patients were placed in the lateral decubitus position to receive spinal anesthesia at L4-5 lev

Effects of postural change from supine to head-up tilt on the skin sympathetic nerve activity component synchronised with the cardiac cycle in warmed men.

KEY POINTS: Humans are unique in controlling body temperature in a hot environment by a large amount of skin blood flow; however, the decrease in total peripheral resistance due to systemic cutaneous vasodilatation and the reduction of venous return to the heart due to blood pooling in the cutaneous vein threatens blood pressure maintenance in the upright position, and occasionally causes heat syncope. Against this condition, cutaneous vasodilatation is reportedly suppressed to maintain arterial pressure; however, the nerve activity responsible for this phenomenon has not been identified. In t

Sympathetic-sensory coupling after L5 spinal nerve lesion in the rat and its relation to changes in dorsal root ganglion blood flow.

Transection of the L5 spinal nerve in rats results in allodynia- and hyperalgesia-like behavior to mechanical stimulation which are thought to be mediated by ectopic activity arising in lesioned afferent neurons mainly in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). It has been suggested that the neuropathic pain behavior is dependent on the sympathetic nervous system. In rats 3-56 days after L5 spinal nerve lesion, we tested responses of axotomized afferent fibers recorded in the dorsal root of the lesioned segment to norepinephrine (NE, 0.5 microg/kg) injected intravenously and to selective electrical st

Cutaneous responses to endothelin-1 and histamine in patients with vibration white finger.

Vibration white finger (VWF) is the episodic blanching of the fingers that occurs in response to cold in those who work with hand-held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent pain and paresthesia are common in the hands and arms and occur independently of the "white attacks." We have previously reported a decrease in protein gene product 9.5 and calcitonin gene-related peptide-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the digital skin of individuals with VWF. In this study, we have sought to determine whether this deficit of immunoreactive sensory

Vascular abnormalities in reflex sympathetic dystrophy (CRPS I): mechanisms and diagnostic value.

Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I, formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy) is a painful neuropathic disorder that develops after trauma affecting the limbs without overt nerve injury. Clinical features are spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia, impairment of motor function, swelling, changes in sweating, and vascular abnormalities. In this study, the pathophysiological mechanisms of vascular abnormalities were investigated. Furthermore, the incidence, sensitivity and specificity of side differences in skin temperature were defined in order to distinguish patients with definite CRP

Intracerebral steal phenomenon associated with global hyperemia in moyamoya disease during revascularization surgery.

OBJECT: The collateral vessels in moyamoya disease appear to retain their ability to constrict during hypocapnia but not to dilate during hypercapnia. It has been claimed that hypercapnia, as well as hypocapnia, decreases the blood flow in regions perfused by collateral vessels, presumably because of intracerebral steal. If this holds true, the decrease in blood flow may be proportional to the global hyperemia in the brain. To establish appropriate hemodynamic control during revascularization surgery, the authors monitored the jugular bulb oxygen saturation (SjO2) intraoperatively, a method th

Sympathetic nerve regulation of cochlear blood flow during increases in blood pressure in humans.

The purpose of this work was to show that regulation of the blood flow to the cochlea by the sympathetic nervous system occurs in humans at the level of the cochlear microcirculation during increases in blood pressure and that its involvement depends on the pressure level. Eight anaesthetized patients undergoing tympanoplasty for hearing disease took part in a pharmacological protocol of stimulation and inhibition of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to provide variations in systolic blood pressure (BPS) and cochlear blood flow (CBF). The CBF was measured by laser-Doppler flowmetry. Changes i

The Role of miR-126 in Critical Limb Ischemia Treatment Using Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Therapeutic Factor Concentrate and Extracellular Matrix Microparticles.

BACKGROUND Paracrine factors secreted by adipose-derived stem cells can be captured, fractionated, and concentrated to produce therapeutic factor concentrate (TFC). The present study examined whether TFC effects could be enhanced by combining TFC with a biological matrix to provide sustained release of factors in the target region. MATERIAL AND METHODS Unilateral hind limb ischemia was induced in rabbits. Ischemic limbs were injected with either placebo control, TFC, micronized small intestinal submucosa tissue (SIS), or TFC absorbed to SIS. Blood flow in both limbs was assessed with laser Dop

Post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia of skin microvasculature and foot complications in type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: Diabetes-related microvascular disease has been implicated in the development of foot ulceration and amputation. Assessment of microvascular function may be effective in identifying those at risk of diabetic foot complications. We investigated the relationship between active or previous foot complication and post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia (PORH) measured by laser-Doppler fluxmetry (LDF) in people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: PORH measures were obtained from the hallux apex in 105 people with type 2 diabetes. Associations were investigated between active or previous foot complicati

Defective Myogenic Response of Retinal Vessels Is Associated With Accelerated Onset of Retinopathy in Type 1 Diabetic Individuals.

PURPOSE: We seek to identify pathogenic mechanisms for diabetic retinopathy that can become therapeutic targets beyond hyperglycemia and hypertension. We investigated if a defective myogenic response of retinal arteries to increased perfusion pressure, which exposes capillaries to increased pressure and flow, is associated with the onset of clinical retinopathy. METHODS: We examined prospectively the incidence of retinopathy in type 1 diabetic individuals tested 4 years earlier for the retinal arterial myogenic response, and in a cross-sectional study the prevalence of defective myogenic resp

Optic nerve head blood flow response to reduced ocular perfusion pressure by alteration of either the blood pressure or intraocular pressure.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that blood flow autoregulation in the optic nerve head has less reserve to maintain normal blood flow in the face of blood pressure-induced ocular perfusion pressure decrease than a similar magnitude intraocular pressure-induced ocular perfusion pressure decrease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve normal non-human primates were anesthetized by continuous intravenous infusion of pentobarbital. Optic nerve blood flow was monitored by laser speckle flowgraphy. In the first group of animals (n = 6), the experimental eye intraocular pressure was maintained at 10 mmHg us
