Do stimulants improve self-esteem in children with ADHD and peer problems?

The self-esteem of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been shown to be low. The effects of stimulant medication upon their self-esteem have not been systematically studied. The present study employed a reliable self-report instrument to measure the self-esteem of children with ADHD medicated with stimulants vs. those who were unmedicated. Results showed that stimulants were associated with significantly higher self-esteem. Children with ADHD prescribed stimulants reported feeling more intelligent and more popular than unmedicated children with ADHD. Children with

Attention deficit.

Attention deficit, among the most commonly diagnosed functional deficits in pediatric neurology, is, like epilepsy, most often idiopathic. It can also be a symptom of many neuropathologic states. Although a lifelong problem, attention deficit is most troublesome during school years, because, like asthma, it is highly sensitive to environmental influence. The neurologist can consider attention deficit in its own right, apart from hyperkinesis and other associated behavior disorders, as a cognitive limitation and handicap to academic progress.

Relative Age in School and Initiation of Speech Therapy in Children.

IMPORTANCE: In most countries, children in the same grade can be up to 12 months apart in age, which represents a considerable relative age difference, particularly in the early years. A relative age effect has been frequently reported in the diagnosis and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and, more rarely, in the diagnosis of other neurodevelopmental disorders. The relative age effect has never been studied for speech therapy, which is frequently prescribed to treat specific language and learning disorders. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the association of relative age with the i

Collicular dysfunction in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by (inter alia) an increase in distractibility. The current front-line pharmacotherapies for the treatment of ADHD, namely the psychostimulants methylphenidate and amphetamines, have clear abuse potential, hence there is a strong need to develop new drug treatments for this disorder. Central to this process is the identification of the pathophysiological changes which underlie ADHD. Given the heterogeneity of the disorder, multiple loci are probably involved, providing multiple potential th

[Meta-analysis of candidate genes in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder].

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder observed during childhood, detected in 3% to 5% of school-age children. The disorder is characterised by marked inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. In most cases, symptoms can be treated by catecholamine-releasing drugs, such as methylphenidate. Children with ADHD are at higher risk for substance abuse and oppositional, conduct and mood disorders. Familial and adoption studies shed light on the genetic vulnerability of ADHD. Twin studies estimated the broad heritability to range between 40% and 90%. The

Trends in amphetamine prescriptions given at discharge in emergency departments: A national analysis (2012-2019).

OBJECTIVES: In parallel with the opioid epidemic, there has been a resurgence in abuse, medical complications, and deaths related to amphetamines. The opioid epidemic began with increasing rates of prescription products that evolved overtime to include heroin and more recently, fentanyl analogues. Current trends in amphetamine prescriptions are less well described. We sought to determine if there has been a change in amphetamine prescriptions given at discharge in U.S. emergency departments (EDs) in recent years. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of data provided by the National Ho

A Study on Morphometric Changes of the Pinna Following Ear Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This review addresses the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders (SUDs), with an emphasis on factors that determine the potential for psychostimulant abuse. Strategies for identification and treatment of patients with ADHD who are at risk for, or have, co-morbid SUD are also addressed. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The article was based on a qualitative review of current literature addressing co-morbid ADHD and SUD. DISCUSSION: Adolescent and adult patients with ADHD are at increased risk for SUD, as well as a number of othe

Investigating the dopaminergic synapse in vivo. I. Molecular imaging studies in humans.

Dopaminergic synaptic function may be assessed either at the presynaptic terminal or at the postsynaptic binding sites using molecular in vivo imaging methods. Apart from the density of binding sites, parameters such as alterations in dopamine synthesis, dopamine storage or dopamine release can be quantified either by application of specific radiotracers or by assessing the competition between the exogenous radioligand and endogenous dopamine. Investigations of humans in both clinical and experimental settings have yielded evidence that disturbances of dopaminergic function may be associated w

Atomoxetine: a review of its use in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

UNLABELLED: Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and nonstimulant that has shown greater efficacy than placebo in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. In two large, well controlled, 10-week trials in adults with ADHD, improvements in ADHD symptoms, as assessed by investigator- and patient-rated scores, were greater with oral atomoxetine (60, 90 or 120 mg/day) than with placebo. Mean reductions in the total ADHD symptom score on the investigator-rated Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) in atomoxetine versus placebo recipients were

Pathophysiology of NSS in ADHD.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the behavioural disorder most commonly diagnosed in childhood. In addition to the main symptoms of inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity, neurological soft signs (NSS) are often associated with ADHD. NSS are discrete motor and sensory disorders that cannot be linked to specific cerebral lesions. We review all the scientific contributions on NSS in ADHD. The conclusions support the presence of an alteration in the neural networks for motor control inhibition, at the base of the pathophysiology of NSS in children with ADHD, as well as a p

Judgments of the fairness of using performance enhancing drugs.

Undergraduates (total N=185) were asked about performance-affecting drugs. Some drugs supposedly affected athletic performance, others memory, and other attention. Some improved performance for anyone who took them, others for the top 10% of performers, others for the bottom 10%, and finally, yet other drugs worked only on the bottom 10% who also showed physical abnormalities. Participants were asked about the fairness of allowing the drug to be used, about banning it, and about whether predictions of future performance based on testing with or without the drug were better. The study found tha

A menstruation-linked periodic hypersomnia. Kleine-Levin syndrome or new clinical entity?

A 13-year-old girl showed periodic episodes of somnolence without megaphagia recurring in association with each menstruation. During somnolent episodes total sleep time averaged 14 hours and 19 minutes per 24 hours. The level of performance evaluated by means of the Wilkinson Addition Test was significantly impaired. There was an abnormal increase of 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid in the cerebrospinal fluid after probenecid test, suggesting an increase of the turnover of 5-hydroxytryptamine during periodic hypersomnia. Investigation of the menstrual cycle failed to document any striking hormonal ab

Gender differences in drug-induced precocious puberty: a real-world analysis of adverse event reports from the FDA FAERS database (2004-2024).

BACKGROUND: Precocious puberty (PP) is the early onset of secondary sexual characteristics before the typical age of puberty, which can be caused by hormonal imbalances or external factors, such as medications. Drug-induced precocious puberty (DIPP) has become a growing concern, particularly in pediatric populations. However, the impact of gender differences on DIPP risk and the challenges in drug safety assessments have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate gender-specific differences in the occurrence of drug-induced precocious puberty (DIPP) and identify potential risk signals

Non-dopaminergic treatments for motor control in Parkinson's disease.

The pathological processes underlying Parkinson's disease (PD) involve more than dopamine cell loss within the midbrain. These non-dopaminergic neurotransmitters include noradrenergic, serotonergic, glutamatergic, and cholinergic systems within cortical, brainstem and basal ganglia regions. Several non-dopaminergic treatments are now in clinical use to treat motor symptoms of PD, or are being evaluated as potential therapies. Agents for symptomatic monotherapy and as adjunct to dopaminergic therapies for motor symptoms include adenosine A2A antagonists and the mixed monoamine-B inhibitor (MAO-
