A reproducible experimental model of intra-abdominal infections in rats has been devised in order to stimulate intra-abdominal sepsis in patients. Pre-operatively, the rats were fed with lean ground beef for two weeks in order to change the intestinal flora to one similar to that of humans. UNLABELLED: We report 2 cases of inadvertent filtering blebs that developed vision-threatening complications many years after uneventful cataract extraction with scleral incisions. The wound care management of a palliative care patient with sinusitis pinoidalis is documented. The treatment is validated by the expert's opinion. There is only little evidence-based treatment of such a lesion. In our experience, photo documentation is helpful in decision-making during the treatment process. In addition, healing of larger defects seems to improve upon frequent and extensive liquid cleansing.

Chronic suppurative otitis media in young children is a major problem in Africa, with socio-economic consequences at a later age. Common treatment regimens with antibiotics are expensive and often not practically feasible. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Xeroform® is a petrolatum-based fine mesh gauze containing 3% bismuth tribromophenate. Bismuth, similar to other metals, has antimicrobial properties. Xeroform® has been used for decades in burn and plastic surgery as a donor site dressing and as a covering for wounds or partial thickness burns.
