Bancroftian filariasis in the Igwun basin, Nigeria: an epidemiological, parasitological, and clinical study in relation to the transmission dynamics.

A 12-months study on bancroftian filariasis was carried out in the Igwun basin, Nigeria. A total of 1,418 individuals (768 males, and 650 females) were examined for microfilaremia and clinical filarial stigmata. There were 14.3% and 11.1% male and female point prevalence rates, respectively, and an overall prevalence of 12.8%. Prevalence rates and microfilarial density increased with age. The highest mff density of 35 mff/20 ml blood occurred in the 40-49 year old male individuals. Disease rates of 55.5 and 65.3% were recorded for males and females respectively. Chyluria (9.3% males, 16.7% fem

Sensitivity of anti-filarial antibodies for lymphatic filariasis surveillance: Insights from a serological survey in Samoa in 2018.

BACKGROUND: Sensitive diagnostic tools that signal lymphatic filariasis (LF) transmission are needed to monitor the progress of LF elimination programs. Anti-filarial antibody (Ab) markers could be more sensitive than antigen (Ag) point-of-care tests for monitoring LF transmission in some settings. This study aimed to investigate the sensitivity of anti-filarial Abs for detecting signals of LF transmission in Samoa by i) investigating the sensitivity and specificity of Ab to identify Ag-positives; ii) estimating the average number needed to test (NNTestav) to identify LF-seropositives (seropos

Bancroftian filariasis in an endemic area of Brazil: differences between genders during puberty.

Gender differences in susceptibility to infectious diseases have been observed in various studies. A survey was performed in a bancroftian filariasis endemic area in the city of Olinda, Brazil. All residents aged 5 years or older were examined by thick blood film. People aged 9 to 16 years were interviewed and also tested for filarial antigenaemia. Data were analyzed by contingency table methods and regression models. The risk of microfilaraemia for males was significantly higher. Among those aged 9 to 16 years, the analysis of gender and filariasis by age showed that boys from 15 to 16 years

Lymphatic filariasis in Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh.

As per earlier reports only Ratanpur PHC of the district Bilaspur of Chattisgarh was endemic for filariasis. During the present survey microfilaria infection and disease manifestations were detected in two more PHCs namely Bilha and Bilaspur. 3426 Night blood smears were collected from 24 randomly selected localities (13 rural and 11 urban) covering 25% known endemic areas and 75% reportedly non-endemic areas. Sample size was calculated taking 12% prevalence rate using standard statistical formula. Sixty-two indigenous residents (mf rate 1.80%) were found positive for W. bancrofti infection. M

Acute adenolymphangitis due to bancroftian filariasis in Rufiji district, south east Tanzania.

A longitudinal prospective surveillance for acute adenolymphagitis (ADL) was carried out in three villages in Rufiji district. A sample population of 3000 individuals aged 10 years and above was monitored fortnightly for a period of 12 months. The annual incidence of ADL was found to be 33 per 1000 population and was significantly higher in males than females (52.7/1000 and 18.7/1000 respectively). ADL episodes were more frequent in the age group of 40 years and above. Individuals with chronic manifestations seemed to be more vulnerable to ADL attacks with 62.2% of the total episodes occurring

Rural bancroftian filariasis in north-western Cameroon: parasitological and clinical studies.

A cross-sectional epidemiological, parasitological and clinical survey of bancroftian filarieasis was conducted in the rural north-western Republic of Cameroon. Of the 1020 respondents (622 males and 398 females) randomly drawn from 4 ethnically homogeneous communities, 148 were microfilaraemic giving an overall prevalence of 14.5%. Association between the ages of individuals and the prevalence of microfilaria (mf) in peripheral circulation was statistically significant (chi 2(6) = 12.59, P < 0.05). More males (7.8%) than females (6.7%) of all ages exhibited mf and was significant statisticall

A 16-year follow-up study on bancroftian filariasis in three communities of north-eastern Tanzania.

The results of a 16-year, parasitological and clinical, follow-up study on bancroftian filariasis in three villages in north-eastern Tanzania are reported and analysed with respect to the long-term development of microfilaraemia and disease. The study revealed an extraordinary static situation, both at the community level and at the individual level. No significant differences were observed in any of the three villages, with respect to total or age-specific prevalences of microfilaraemia, hydrocele in males aged > or = 20 years or leg elephantiasis in all subjects aged > or = 20 years, when th

Designing and comparative analysis of anti-oxidant and heat shock proteins based multi-epitopic filarial vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease affecting more than 882 million people in 44 countries of the world. A multi-epitope prophylactic/therapeutic vaccination targeting filarial defense proteins would be invaluable to achieve the current LF elimination goal. METHOD: Two groups of proteins, namely Anti-oxidant (AO) and Heat shock proteins (HSPs), have been implicated in the effective survival of the filarial parasites in their hosts. Several B-cell, CTL, and T-helper epitopes were predicted from the three anti-oxidant proteins GST, GPx, and SOD. Likewise, epito

Comparison of antigen and antibody responses in repeat lymphatic filariasis transmission assessment surveys in American Samoa.

BACKGROUND: Current WHO recommendations for lymphatic filariasis (LF) surveillance advise programs to implement activities to monitor for new foci of transmission after stopping mass drug administration (MDA). A current need in the global effort to eliminate LF is to standardize diagnostic tools and surveillance activities beyond the recommended transmission assessment survey (TAS). METHODOLOGY: TAS was first conducted in American Samoa in 2011 (TAS 1) and a repeat TAS was carried out in 2015 (TAS 2). Circulating filarial antigen (CFA) and serologic results from both surveys were analyzed to

A Trial of a Triple-Drug Treatment for Lymphatic Filariasis.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has targeted lymphatic filariasis for global elimination by 2020 with a strategy of mass drug administration. This trial tested whether a single dose of a three-drug regimen of ivermectin plus diethylcarbamazine plus albendazole results in a greater sustained clearance of microfilariae than a single dose of a two-drug regimen of diethylcarbamazine plus albendazole and is noninferior to the two-drug regimen administered once a year for 3 years. METHODS: In a randomized, controlled trial involving adults from Papua New Guinea with Wuchereria bancrofti m

Long-term effect of three different strategies for mass diethylcarbamazine administration in bancroftian filariasis: follow-up at 10 years after treatment.

The long-term effect of three different strategies for mass diethylcarbamazine (DEC) administration in bancroftian filariasis was assessed 10 years after start of treatment in three endemic communities in Tanzania. The strategies were the standard 12 day treatment (strategy I); a semi-annual single-dose treatment (strategy II); and a monthly low-dose treatment (strategy III). Treatment was given only during the first year. Following reductions immediately after treatment, overall community microfilaraemia levels were approaching pre-treatment levels in all three communities, 10 years later. In

Bancroftian filariasis infection, disease, and specific antibody response patterns in a high and a low endemicity community in East Africa.

Bancroftian filariasis infection, disease and specific antibody response patterns in a high and a low endemicity community in East Africa were analyzed and compared to assess the relationship between these parameters and community transmission intensity. Overall prevalences of microfilaremia and circulating filarial antigenemia were 24.9% and 52.2% in the high and 2.7% and 16.5% in the low endemicity community, respectively. A positive history of acute attacks of adenolymphangitis was given by 12.2% and 7.1% of the populations, 4.0% and 0.9% of the adult (> or = 20 years old) individuals prese

[Preliminary results in the clinical, epidemiological and parasitological study of Bancrofti filariasis in Madagascar].

In 1958, a large study on the distribution of Bancroft filariasis was set up in Madagascar. In order to update these data, the authors have studied in the same areas the parasitological and clinical prevalence of Bancroft filariasis. Here are the preliminary results of this study, concerning 1862 people, aged 10 years and more. The mean prevalence rate of microfilaria-carriers was of 22.9%, and the average parasitic density was of 3.6 parasits/20 microliters of blood. The prevalence rate of chronic clinical symptoms was of 14.7% for men (elephantiasis, hydroceles, chyluria) and of 2% for women

Introduction of an integrated community-based bancroftian filariasis control program into the Mt Bosavi region of the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.

In mid-1987 a baseline microfilarial prevalence survey was conducted among five villages in the Mt Bosavi region of the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. Through use of the Nucleopore filtration technique, it was determined that 48% of villagers had detectable microfilaraemia. The highest prevalence was documented in Fogomaiyu, where the microfilaraemia rate was 92%. On the basis of this initial survey and the expressed interest of the community, the Division of Health in the Southern Highlands Province undertook an integrated community-based pilot control program. Helminth infection alters IgE responses to allergens structurally related to parasite proteins.

Immunological cross-reactivity between environmental allergens and helminth proteins has been demonstrated, although the clinically related implications of this cross-reactivity have not been addressed. To investigate the impact of molecular similarity among allergens and cross-reactive homologous helminth proteins in IgE-based serologic assessment of allergic disorders in a helminth-infected population, we performed ImmunoCAP tests in filarial-infected and noninfected individuals for IgE measurements to allergen extracts that contained proteins with high levels of homology with helminth prote
