BACKGROUND: Robotic single-site cholecystectomy (RSSC) has been shown to be a safe alternative to the laparoscopic approach in selected patients. Patient exclusion criteria have prevented RSSC as a surgical option in many obese patients. This study reports the feasibility of performing RSSC in obese patients (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30).
METHODS: Between November 2012 and February 2014, a total of 200 patients underwent RSSC at our institution. All patients were offered the robotic procedure regardless of their BMI, age, previous surgery, and acuity of their disease with no exclusion criteria

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2007eng
Primary fascial closure is often difficult after adult orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), complicated by donor-to-recipient graft size mismatch, post-reperfusion hepatic edema, coagulopathy, or intestinal edema. Attempts at closing the abdomen under these circumstances can cause increase in intra-abdominal pressures, resulting in significant complications, including graft loss. Temporary closure with silastic mesh has been used as a viable option in children receiving transplants, but there is no experience recorded with its use in adults. A retrospective review was conducted on 200 conse

INTRODUCTION: sigmoidectomy is the definitive treatment of Sigmoid Volvulus (SV). It can be done either by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Our objective was to describe the left iliac fossa sigmoidectomy with mechanical anastomosis recently introduced in our practice, assess our results after 5 years and evaluate its feasibility in our setting.
METHODS: we conducted a prospective, descriptive and analytic study on all patients admitted for uncomplicated SV with successful non-surgical decompression and treated by a left iliac fossa sigmoidectomy with mechanical anastomosis. This study was held, fr

ASBO is a common cause of emergency surgery and the use of laparoscopy for the treatment of these patients is still under debate and conflicting results have been published, in particular regarding the high risk of iatrogenic bowel injury. In fact, although over the last few years there has been an increasing enthusiasm in the surgical community about the advantages and potential better outcomes of laparoscopic management of adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO), recently published studies have introduced a significant word of caution. From 2011 in our centre, we have started to systematical

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infection (SSI)-associated wound dehiscence offers management challenges, often requiring frequent and prolonged wound care to achieve healing. Dehiscence may result in evisceration, requiring careful attention to infection management and organ protection, leading to extended hospitalization, poor cosmesis, increased costs, and higher risks of incisional hernias, all of which reduce patient satisfaction. Herein, we outline 3 cases in which the combination of negative pressure wound therapy with instillation and dwell time (NPWTi-d) and deep cavity wound dressing and

BACKGROUND Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has rapidly advanced, but its use in transplant patients has lagged. We share our experience of MIS for patients after kidney and liver transplantation and compare our results with similar studies in the literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 14 MIS (12 laparoscopic, 2 transvaginal) procedures for 13 transplant cases (6 liver and 7 kidney) done from May 2006 to May 2018. Gastrointestinal surgery was performed in 6 cases: appendectomy performed 8 months after liver transplant and 16 months after kidney transplant in 2 cases, radical righ

UNLABELLED: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious condition with a high morbidity and mortality commonly affecting premature babies. Data for the impact of the long-term disease burden in developing countries are limited although poor long-term outcome of surgically managed patients has been shown in terms of increased risk of neurodevelopmental delay, increased infectious disease burden and abnormal neurological outcomes in the developed world.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term outcome of a pre-human immunodeficiency virus pandemic NEC cohort to characterize common risk factors and o

BACKGROUND: A parastomal hernia is defined as an incisional hernia related to a stoma, and belongs to the most common stoma-related complications. Many factors, which are considered to influence the incidence of parastomal herniation, have been investigated. However, it remains unclear whether the enterostomy should be placed through, or lateral to the rectus abdominis muscle, in order to prevent parastomal herniation and other important stoma complications.
OBJECTIVES: To assess if there is a difference regarding the incidence of parastomal herniation and other stoma complications, such as i

PURPOSE: Colostomy for patients with anorectal malformations decompresses an obstructed colon, avoids fecal contamination of the urinary tract, and protects a future perineal operation. The procedure is associated with several significant complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 1700 cases of anorectal malformations were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 230 patients underwent reconstruction without a colostomy. Of the remaining 1470 patients, 1420 had their colostomy performed at another institution (group A) and 50 did at our institution (group B) using a specific tec

BACKGROUND: This study aims to systematically evaluate the differences between robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) and laparoscopic-assisted surgery (LAS) in intraoperative parameters, postoperative complications, and prognostic outcomes for children with Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR). By conducting a meta-analysis, evidence-based insights for clinical practice were sought.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched up to May 10, 2025, to identify comparative studies of RAS and LAS for HSCR. Two reviewers independently screened literature and assessed qu

Background An enhanced recovery approach in surgery helps early postoperative discharge. With the decreasing trend of morbidity and mortality in recent times in patients undergoing complex procedures such as pancreaticoduodenectomy, readmissions are the next major concern. The causes and outcomes of these readmissions should be investigated for their impact on patient care and prevention. Methodology A total of 997 patients discharged after pancreaticoduodenectomy from a tertiary care center in northern India, between 1989 and 2021, were studied retrospectively to assess the readmission rate f

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVR) is gaining wider acceptance as the preferred procedure to correct internal as well as external rectal prolapse associated with obstructed defaecation syndrome and/or faecal incontinence. Very few reports exist on the use of biologic mesh for LVR. The aim of our study was to report the complication and recurrence rate of our first 100 cases of LVR for symptomatic internal rectal prolapse and/or rectocele using a porcine dermal collagen mesh.
METHODS: Prospectively collected data on LVR for internal rectal prolapse were analysed. Surgical co
