OBJECTIVES: Given the reported relationship between systolic hypertension and orthostatic hypotension in the elderly, to test the hypothesis that systolic hypertension causes impairment of the cardiovascular reflex function additional to the effects of age alone.
DESIGN: Responses were compared in normotensive healthy young (n = 12) and elderly (n = 15) participants and elderly participants with disproportionate supine systolic hypertension (n = 11) using a baroreceptor-mediated stress (head-up tilt) and two non-baroreceptor-mediated stimuli (cold pressor test and isometric exercise).

Microgravity removes the gravitational loading that anchors fluid distribution, mechanotransduction, vestibular calibration, and vascular homeostasis, exposing the human body to one of its most profound physiological challenges. Rather than producing isolated organ-specific changes, it induces a deeply interconnected, multi-system deconditioning response emerging from disrupted inter-organ communication. This narrative mini review synthesizes evidence from human spaceflight missions, ground-based analog models, and cellular studies to characterize organ- and system-level adaptations from a net

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D is a neuroactive hormone having influence on several biological functions. Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunctions as well as inflammation and oxidative stress are evident in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the development and progression of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunctions in T2DM. Vitamin D insufficiency is prevalent in T2DM. However, the autonomic function status and biomarkers in vitamin D deficient and vitamin D insufficient newly diagnosed T2DM subjects are not clear. Therefore, the present study ai

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic hypertension is chronically high blood pressure that is initiated and maintained through excessive sympathetic nervous system activity and has been associated with increased B1R (kinin B1 receptor) activation. We previously reported a central role for B1R in mediating inflammatory pathways in the development of deoxycorticosterone acetate salt hypertension. Additionally, we identified a causal relationship between B1R expression after Ang II (angiotensin II) stimulation, and that B1R can mediate the bidirectional interaction between neuroinflammation and oxidative stress

Sports-associated traumatic brain injury is emerging as an under-recognized driver of acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases. Larger population-based studies show that individuals with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury experience up to a two-fold excess risk of incident hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke that persists for at least a decade. Among former professional American-style football players, a higher lifetime concussion burden is uniquely related to a more atherogenic cardiometabolic profile and greater long-term stroke risk. BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction is a high-risk condition prevalent among the elderly population, often leading to adverse clinical manifestations such as reduced cardiopulmonary function, anxiety, and depression post-surgery. Consequently, cardiac rehabilitation holds immense importance in mitigating these complications.
AIM: To evaluate the effect of individualized cardiac rehabilitation on blood pressure variability (BPV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in elderly patients with myocardial infarction.
METHODS: A cohort of 74 elderly patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction and admit

Chronic hypertensive pregnancy (CHP) is a growing health issue with unknown etiology. Vasopressin (VP), a nonapeptide synthesized in paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nucleus (SON), is a well-known neuroendocrine and autonomic modulator of the cardiovascular system, related to hypertension development. We quantified gene expression of VP and its receptors, V1aR and V1bR, within the PVN and SON in CHP and normal pregnancy, and assessed levels of secreted plasma VP. Also, we evaluated autonomic cardiovascular adaptations to CHP using spectral indices of blood pressure (BPV) and heart rate (HR

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients with cerebral autoregulation (CA) impairment at an early post-SAH period are at high risk of unfavorable outcomes due to delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) or other complications. Limited evidence exists for an association between early-stage CA impairments and SAH patient outcomes. The objective of this prospective study was to explore associations between CA impairments detected in early post-SAH snapshot examinations and patient outcomes.
METHODS: The pilot observational study included 29 SAH patients whose CA status was estimated 2-3 days af

BACKGROUND: Activation of central autonomic pathways, including those regulating the arterial baroreflex, might reduce acute pain. We tested the hypothesis that transcutaneous auricular nerve stimulation (TAN) reduces pain after orthopaedic trauma surgery through autonomic modulation.
METHODS: A total of 86 participants aged >18 yr were randomly assigned to 50 min of either sham or active bilateral TAN, undertaken before, and again 24 h after, surgery for orthopaedic trauma. The primary outcome was absolute change in pain 24 h postoperatively, comparing the 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS)

BACKGROUND: Moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) is strongly recommended for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) treatment. However, recent studies have suggested that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) would promote great benefits for cardiac autonomic control. Therefore, we investigated whether the benefits of HIIT related to cardiovascular autonomic control were greater than those of MICT in women with PCOS.
METHODS: Women with PCOS were randomly allocated through a blind draw into three groups: control, MICT, and HIIT. The control group did not undergo exercise, whereas those

Objectives: To investigate whether a single bout of mixed circuit training (MCT) can elicit acute blood pressure (BP) reduction in chronic hemiparetic stroke patients, a phenomenon also known as post-exercise hypotension (PEH). Methods: Seven participants (58 ± 12 years) performed a non-exercise control session (CTL) and a single bout of MCT on separate days and in a randomized counterbalanced order. The MCT included 10 exercises with 3 sets of 15-repetition maximum per exercise, with each set interspersed with 45 s of walking. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, mean arterial p

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? 3,5-Diiodothyronine (3,5-T2) administration increases resting metabolic rate, prevents or treats liver steatosis in rodent models, and ameliorates insulin resistance: what are its effects on cardiac electrical and contractile properties and autonomic regulation? What is the main finding and its importance? Chronic 3,5-T2 administration has no adverse effects on cardiac function. Remarkably, 3,5-T2 improves the autonomous control of the rat heart and protects against ischaemia-reperfusion injury.
ABSTRACT: The use of 3,5,3'-triiodothyro

Previously, we showed that peripheral administration of 2-ME (2-methoxyestradiol), a CYP1B1 (cytochrome P450 1B1)-catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) generated metabolite of E2 (17β-Estradiol), protects against angiotensin II-induced hypertension in female mice. The demonstration that central E2 inhibits angiotensin II-induced hypertension, together with the expression of CYP1B1 in the brain, led us to hypothesize that E2-CYP1B1 generated metabolite 2-ME in the brain mediates its protective action against angiotensin II-induced hypertension in female mice. To test this hypothesis, we examined

AIMS: LCZ696, a first-generation dual angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNi), is effective in treating heart failure patients. However, the role of ARNis in treating diabetic cardiomyopathy is poorly understood. This study evaluates the efficacy of a novel combination of telmisartan [angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)] and thiorphan [neprilysin inhibitor (NEPi)] in ameliorating diabetic cardiomyopathy while, at the same time, exploring the relevant underlying molecular mechanism(s).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Diabetes was induced by administration of streptozotocin (55 mg/kg, i.p.) in mal

PURPOSE: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been considered for the treatment of sympathetically mediated disorders. However, the optimal mode of stimulation is unknown. This study aimed to compare the cardiovascular effects of respiratory-gated taVNS in healthy subjects.
METHODS: The examination included expiratory-gated, inspiratory-gated, and non-respiratory-gated taVNS trials. Subjects were examined twice (the order of expiratory- and inspiratory-gated taVNS was changed). taVNS trials started with controlled breathing without stimulation (pre-stimulatory recordin

PURPOSE: Little is known about whether mild aberrations in glucose metabolism, which are seen in overweight/obese subjects (OW/OB) without impaired glucose tolerance, affect regulator control elements for blood pressure homeostasis.
METHODS: Hence, we measured in age-matched male subjects with normal weight (n = 16; BMI = 22.4 kg m-2) and OW/OB (n = 11; BMI = 28.6 kg m-2) continuous beat-to-beat blood pressure, heart rate, stroke volume, myocardial contractility and baroreflex sensitivity during a 30 min baseline and for 120 min after the ingestion of 75 g glucose dissolved in 300 mL tap wate

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. As abnormal cardiac autonomic function is a common feature in cardiovascular diseases, we tested the hypothesis that low birth weight may also be associated with poorer cardiac autonomic function in middle-aged subjects.
METHODS: At the age of 46, the subjects of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 were invited to examinations including questionnaires about health status and life style and measurement of vagally-mediated heart rate variability (rMSSD) from R-R intervals (RRi) and spon

The present study investigates the response of implantable rotary blood pump (IRBP)-assisted patients to exercise and head-up tilt (HUT), as well as the effect of alterations in the model parameter values on this response, using validated numerical models. Furthermore, we comparatively evaluate the performance of a number of previously proposed physiologically responsive controllers, including constant speed, constant flow pulsatility index (PI), constant average pressure difference between the aorta and the left atrium, constant average differential pump pressure, constant ratio between mean

BACKGROUND: Increased arterial stiffness is linked to hypertension in adults after surgical repair for coarctation of the aorta. We evaluated the influence of surgical approaches, namely, subclavian flap repair (SFR) and end-to-end anastomosis (EEA), on arterial stiffness, blood pressure, cardiac output, and cardiac baroreceptor function in a cohort of young children after coarctation repair to determine if the surgical approach influenced longer term blood pressure control.
METHODS: We measured pulse wave velocity in 21 children with a mean age of 5 years, after early (less than 6 months) co

Deltorphin E was investigated as a pharmaceutical intervention in the ischemic hemorrhagic model. To monitor the hemodynamic biomarkers mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) and to facilitate i.v. injections, rats were surgically fitted with femoral artery and vein catheters under anesthesia. After removal of 48% of total blood volume (range, 12-15 mL), posthemorrhage i.v. injections of 5.5-mg/kg deltorphin E were found to significantly (P < 0.05) increase maximum MAP, pulse pressure, and survival after hemorrhage, whereas lactic acid concentration was decreased when compared with s
