[Investigation of the frequency of PER-1 type beta-lactamase and antimicrobial resistance rates in nosocomial isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is a common cause of nosocomial infections, usually leads to treatment difficulties due to multi-drug resistance. PER-1 type extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria are shown to be common in Turkey. Since limited number of antibiotics such as antipseudomonal penicillins, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones and carbapenems are available for the treatment of P.aeruginosa infections, it is essential to monitor and eventually control the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of PE

Frequency of occurrence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for pathogens isolated from latin american patients with a diagnosis of pneumonia: results from the SENTRY antimicrobial surveillance program (1998).

The correct empiric choice of antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of pneumonia in hospitalized patients has established itself as a major therapeutic challenge to clinicians. Selection of an inappropriate antimicrobial agent could lead to increased rates of mortality and morbidity. Characteristics of pathogens responsible for this infection such as species prevalence, overall antimicrobial resistance rates, and mechanisms of detected resistance could serve as an invaluable resource to clinicians in making such therapeutic selections. This report addresses the aforementioned problems/needs b

Network meta-analysis of the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from bovine milk and dairy products: A global perspective.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant challenge to global health, particularly concerning bacteria in the food we consume. Pathogens such as Escherichia coli, commonly found in milk and dairy products, are increasingly resistant to multiple antimicrobials due to the overuse and misuse of these drugs in both human medicine and agricultural practices. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and resistance rate to various antimicrobials of E. coli isolated from bovine milk and dairy products. A total of 236 studies, encompassing 287,792 E. coli isolates, were included in the network

Genomic Surveillance of Clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates Reveals an Additive Effect of Carbapenemase Production on Carbapenem Resistance.

Carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is increasing globally, and surveillance to define the mechanisms of such resistance in low- and middle-income countries is limited. This study establishes the genotypic mechanisms of β-lactam resistance by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in 142 P. aeruginosa clinical isolates recovered from three hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Pakistan between 2016 and 2017. Isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion, and their genomes were assembled from Illumina sequencing data. β-lactam resistance

Characterization of acquired β-lactamases in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and quantification of their contributions to resistance.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a highly problematic opportunistic pathogen that causes a range of different infections. Infections are commonly treated with β-lactam antibiotics, including cephalosporins, monobactams, penicillins, and carbapenems, with carbapenems regarded as antibiotics of last resort. Isolates of P. aeruginosa can contain horizontally acquired bla genes encoding β-lactamase enzymes, but the extent to which these contribute to β-lactam resistance in this species has not been systematically quantified. The overall aim of this research was to address this knowledge gap by quantifyin

Iliopsoas Abscess Related to Pseudomonas aeruginosa: A Case Report.

We describe a rare case of an 80-year-old male with an iliopsoas abscess (IPA) associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). The patient had a history of diabetes mellitus and was admitted to our hospital due to aspiration pneumonia, where he was treated with ampicillin/sulbactam (ABPC/SBT). After admission, he experienced a recurrence of aspiration pneumonia, and ABPC/SBT was repeatedly used. The fever resolved by day 30 and antibiotic therapy was completed on day 33. Although the patient remained afebrile thereafter, anorexia persisted. On day 57, the patient experienced chills, fe

Molecular characterization and antibiotic resistance profile of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli isolated from healthy cow raw milk in smallholder dairy farms in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, such as Escherichia coli in milk, is a serious public health concern as milk is considered a complete food and an important part of daily human diet worldwide, including in Bangladesh. However, there have been no reports on the molecular characterization and antibiotic resistance profile of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli from milk of healthy cows in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study aimed to detect and characterize ESBL-producing E. coli (ESBL-Ec) in milk samples from healthy cows in smallholder d

Simultaneous determination of 8 beta-lactams and linezolid by an ultra-performance liquid chromatography method with UV detection and cross-validation with a commercial immunoassay for the quantification of linezolid.

Linezolid and beta-lactams are anti-infective drugs frequently used in intensive care unit patients. Critical illness could induce alterations of pharmacokinetic parameters due to changes in the distribution, the metabolism and the elimination process. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is therefore recommended to prevent mainly under-dosing of beta-lactams or hematological and neurological toxicities of linezolid. In Multi-or Extensively-Drugs Resistant-Tuberculosis Bacteria, the regimen could include linezolid with meropenem and amoxicillin/clavulanate justifying the development of a method a

[Various antibiotic combinations against carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections and in vitro synergy test results (2002-2016)].

Carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is a bacterium that causes various hospital acquired infections, primarily ventilator-associated pneumonia and bloodstream infections. The multidrug resistance problem of the bacteria all over the world, is also a problem in our center. As the treatment options are decreasing combination therapies become a current issue. It is believed that in vitro synergy tests may guide to the selection of antibiotic combinations. The aim of this study was to present the antibiotic combinations used in the treatment of carbapenem resistant A.baumannii infections

Silver- and fluoride-containing mesoporous bioactive glasses versus commonly used antibiotics: Activity against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains isolated from patients with burns.

The wound healing process is frequently associated with a number of major clinical challenges, due to the failure of commonly used antibiotics as a remedy for wounds. There have always been fascinating questions about the novel applications of bioactive glasses (BGs) and it is expected that in the next few years these types of materials may play an important role in many aspects of soft tissue regeneration. This research focuses on the feasibility of using silver- and fluoride-containing BGs against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains isolated from patients with burns. According to the resul

Adaptive landscape of the metallo-β-lactamase NDM-1 to emerging β-lactam-based therapies.

The New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) is a major determinant of carbapenem resistance. This has prompted the development of novel therapeutic strategies to treat NDM producers. Since these therapies impose new selective pressures, their clinical deployment may favor NDM variants carrying escape mutations. To anticipate these events and inform therapeutic decisions, we explored the evolutionary landscape of NDM-1 under different selective constraints. To this end, we generated a diverse library of blaNDM variants and challenged it with zinc starvation, antibiotics, or β-lactam/β-lactamase inh

CRISPR/Cas9-targeted smpB mutation revealing roles in biofilm formation, motility, and antibiotic susceptibility in Acinetobacter baumannii.

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is a multidrug-resistant pathogen and a major cause of hospital-acquired infections worldwide. Its ability to survive in harsh environments and evade antibiotic treatments underscores the urgent need for new therapeutic targets. Emerging evidence suggests that the small protein B (SmpB) may also play broader roles in bacterial virulence, including regulation of biofilm formation, motility, and stress adaptation. However, the specific contributions of SmpB to these pathogenic traits in A. baumannii remain poorly defined. Addressing this knowledge gap is essen

Outbreak Caused by VIM-1- and VIM-4-Positive Proteus mirabilis in a Hospital in Zagreb.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Proteus mirabilis is a frequent causative agent of urinary and wound infections in both community and hospital settings. It develops resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) due to the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) or plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases (p-AmpCs). Recently, carbapenem-resistant isolates of P. mirabilis emerged due to the production of carbapenemases, mostly belonging to Ambler classes B and D. Here, we report an outbreak of infections due to carbapenem-resistant P. mirabilis that were observed in a psychiatric hospital
