Effects of feeding a simulated waste milk on growth, health, fecal microbiota, and antibiotic resistance in dairy heifer calves.

Feeding waste milk, a common practice in dairy farming, exposes calves to subtherapeutic levels of antimicrobials, potentially contributing to antibiotic resistance-a growing concern globally. Many dairy farmers, including those in Ireland, continue this practice, feeding waste milk from antibiotic-treated cows to calves. Although previous studies have linked waste milk feeding to changes in calf growth and health during the preweaning period, its effects postweaning remain unclear. This study examined how the duration of antimicrobial exposure at levels equivalent to those found in waste milk

CRISPR/Cas9-compatible plasmids enabling seven dominant genetic selection methods for the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans.

Cryptococcus neoformans is the most common cause of human fungal meningitis and an important model system for studying fundamental eukaryotic biology. Genetic manipulation of this organism relies on three dominant drug resistance markers (nourseothricin acetyltransferase [NAT], neomycin phosphotransferase II [NEO], and hygromycin B phosphotransferase [HYG]) and the recyclable dominant prototrophic marker amdS. With ongoing technological advances that are expanding our ability to explore cryptococcal gene function, contemporary studies often require multiple genetic manipulations in the same st

Prebiotic supplementation effect on Escherichia coli and Salmonella species associated with experimentally induced intestinal coccidiosis in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Coccidian infection may enhance the proliferation of gut Enterobacteriaceae. Bacterial infections in rabbits can negatively affect the body condition and cause high mortality, especially at young ages. Therefore, the effect of prebiotic supplementation on the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella species in rabbits experimentally infected with intestinal coccidiosis was investigated. METHODS: Thirty male rabbits aged 35-40 days were divided into three equal groups. These groups were; prebiotic supplemented (PS), positive control (PC), and negative control (NC) groups. The pr

Acquired palmoplantar keratoderma.

The management of children with end-stage chronic liver disease and acute liver failure mandates a multidisciplinary approach and intense monitoring. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in developing specific and supportive medical measures, but studies and publications have mainly concerned adult patients. Therapeutic approaches to complications of end-stage chronic liver disease and acute liver failure (e.g. refractory ascites, hepatorenal syndrome, encephalopathy, and cerebral edema) that may be applied to children are reviewed in this article.Mild-to-moderate ascites shoul

Effects of heat stress on the antimicrobial drug resistance of Escherichia coli of the intestinal flora of swine.

The effects of heat stress on the antimicrobial drug resistance of Escherichia coli of the intestinal tract of swine were studied in animals from a farm that had not been supplementing antimicrobials in feed for the past 10 years. In one study, 10 finisher hogs were heat stressed (34 degrees C) for 24 h. Antimicrobial resistance levels after stress were significantly higher (P < 0.05) when compared with pre-stress levels for amikacin, ampicillin, cephalothin, neomycin and tetracycline from faecal samples. This high level of resistance persisted to slaughter that occurred at 10 days post-stress

Xenograft model of progressive human proliferative breast disease.

BACKGROUND: Progression of proliferative breast disease has been associated with increased risk for development of invasive carcinoma. Cell lines have been developed to facilitate the study of this process. Human cell line MCF10A originated from spontaneous immortalization of breast epithelial cells obtained from a patient with fibrocystic disease, and cell lines MCF10AneoN and MCF10AneoT were created by stable transfection of these cells with the neomycin-resistance gene and either the HRAS gene or the mutated T-24 HRAS gene, respectively. IL-10 is critical for host resistance and survival during gastrointestinal helminth infection.

Resistance to many intestinal nematodes is dependent on the induction of polarized type 2 cytokine responses, whereas type 1 responses can exacerbate these infections. The contributions of IL-4 and IL-13 to the development of resistance have been well described for a variety of intestinal parasites; however, the role of IL-10 has not been previously investigated. In this study we infected IL-10-, IL-10/IL-4-, IL-10/IL-12-, IL-4-, and IL-12-deficient mice with Trichuris muris to determine whether IL-10 contributes to the development of immunity. Interestingly, T. muris-infected IL-10-, IL-4-, a

Temporal trends and predictors of antimicrobial resistance among Staphylococcus spp. isolated from canine specimens submitted to a diagnostic laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to commonly used antimicrobials is a growing concern in both human and veterinary medicine. Understanding the temporal changes in the burden of the problem and identifying its determinants is important for guiding control efforts. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate temporal patterns and predictors of antimicrobial resistance among Staphylococcus spp. isolated from canine specimens submitted to the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL) between 1993 and 2009. METHODS: Retrospective data of 4,972 Staphylococcus isolates asse

Effect of ethnomedicinal plants used in folklore medicine in Jordan as antibiotic resistant inhibitors on Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli occurs naturally in the human gut; however, certain strains that can cause infections, are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Multidrug-resistant E. coli that produce extended-spectrum beta lactamases (ESBLs), such as the CTX-M enzymes, have emerged within the community setting as an important cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bloodstream infections may be associated with these community-onsets. This is the first report testing the antibiotic resistance-modifying activity of nineteen Jordanian plants against multidrug-resistant E. coli. METHODS: The sus

Bacterial isolates and antimicrobial susceptibilities in equine bacterial ulcerative keratitis (1993--2004).

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Bacterial ulcerative keratitis is a common and often vision-threatening problem in horses. Emerging bacterial resistance to commonly used topical antibiotics has been demonstrated. Previous antibiotic use may alter the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial isolates. OBJECTIVES: To document aerobic bacterial isolates and associated bacterial susceptibilities from horses with ulcerative keratitis treated at the University of Tennessee between January 1993 and May 2004 and determine whether prior antibiotic therapy affected antimicrobial susceptibility of the is

Evaluation of previously patch-tested patients referred to a contact dermatitis clinic.

BACKGROUND: One of the frustrations for clinicians who use patch testing is the patient in whom screening patch tests does not yield a relevant result that improves patient outcome. Is it allergic contact dermatitis? Was an allergen missed? Is the screening allergen relevant after all? OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to look at the subset of patients referred to a contact clinic who had previously undergone patch testing to seek answers to these questions for this population. METHOD: The charts of all 119 physician-referred patients seen in the contact clinic from February through A

Optimum management of the discharging ear.

Discharge from the ear can be the result of many disease processes. The ear may discharge blood, pus, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or wax. Keratosis obturans, stenosis of the external meatus and benign tumours of the external meatus all lead to wax build-up, which may cause recurrent attacks of otitis externa. Malignant tumours, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and tumours of ceruminous gland origin may also present with discharge. Tumours should be excluded by submitting all material removed from the external canal for histological examination. Single or multiple abscesses (

Antimicrobial Use, Residues, Resistance and Governance in the Food and Agriculture Sectors, Tanzania.

All infections are potentially curable as long as the etiological agents are susceptible to antimicrobials. The increased rate at which antimicrobials are becoming ineffective is a global health risk of increasing concern that threatens withdrawal of beneficial antimicrobials for disease control. The increased demand for food of animal origin, in particular eggs, meat and milk has led to intensification and commercial production systems where excessive use and misuse of antimicrobials may prevail. Antimicrobials, handled and used by farmers and animal attendants with no formal education, may b

Disruption of the Gut Microbiome Increases the Risk of Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most devastating complications of total joint arthroplasty. Given the mortality and morbidity associated with PJI and the challenges in treating it, there has been increased interest in risk factors that can be modified before surgery. In this study, we used a novel mouse model to consider the role of the gut microbiome as a risk factor for PJI. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does the state of the gut microbiota before surgery influence the likelihood of developing an established infection in a mouse model of PJI? (2) How does the state
