Helicobacter felis infection in dogs: effect on gastric structure and function.

The relationship of Helicobacter felis, an organism that is observed in the stomachs of dogs, to gastric disease in dogs is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine if Helicobacter felis infection alters gastric morphology and gastric secretory function in dogs. Five specific-pathogen-free (SPF), Helicobacter-free Beagle dogs were examined before and for 26 weeks after inoculation with H. felis (ATCC 49179). Three SPF uninfected dogs served as controls. All five dogs became colonized by H. felis as determined by urease activity, histopathology, polymerase chain reaction, and trans

Immune response to natural and recombinant antigens of Helicobacter pylori in patients with dyspeptic complaints.

Sera of 223 dyspeptic patients with endoscopic findings of nonulcer dyspepsia (72%), gastric ulcer (15%) and duodenal ulcer (13%) were tested for antibodies against Helicobacter pylori with an enzyme immunoassay and an immunoblot technique using lysates of Helicobacter pylori cells as antigen source. One hundred and fifty-one (68%) sera were found to be positive for Helicobacter pylori IgG with both methods; 5% of the positive results in the enzyme immunoassay were false-positive due to cross-reactions mainly of proteins with a molecular mass of 43-66 kDa. Since cross-reactivity not only reduc

Age and Helicobacter pylori decrease gastric mucosal surface hydrophobicity independently.

BACKGROUND: Gastric mucosal surface hydrophobicity (GMSH) is an essential component of the mucosal defence system that is decreased by Helicobacter pylori and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Gastric ulcers occur predominantly in elderly subjects, and may thus reflect diminished mucosal resistance. AIMS: To investigate whether aging decreases GMSH. PATIENTS: One hundred and twenty patients without peptic ulcer disease were divided into three age groups: I (41 years or below); II (41-64 years); and III (65 years or above). METHODS: Biopsy specimens were taken from the antrum,

Decreased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in gastroesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: An increased incidence of reflux esophagitis has been reported after eradication of H. pylori in patients with duodenal ulcer. To determine if H. pylori is associated with lower rates of esophagitis, we studied the prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with and without reflux esophagitis and a subgroup of patients with concomitant peptic ulcer disease. METHODS: Patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy and had diagnostic testing for H. pylori over a 30-month period were studied. H. pylori infection was determined by rapid urease testing, gastric histopathology, or

[Is chronic laryngitis associated with Helicobacter pylori? Results of a prospective study].

H. pylori is found in the stomach of patients with chronic gastritis. The infection is usually transmitted by the gastro-oral route and bacteria could be identified in saliva and dental plaque. An essential cause of chronic laryngitis is gastroesophageal reflux. The aim of the study was to evaluate if a H.pylori-associated chronic laryngitis exists. 38 patients with chronic laryngitis underwent gastroscopy. Biopsies were taken from the gastric antrum and body, lower, middle and upper esophagus. H. pylori was diagnosed by rapid urease test and histology. 14 of the patients (36.8%) were H.pylori

Decreased gastric proliferation of foveolar epithelial cells after the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

Increased epithelial cell proliferation is associated with an increased risk of gastric carcinoma. Helicobacter pylori infection is an established risk factor for gastric cancer and the organism has recently been classified as a group I carcinogen by an IARC working group. In this study, we describe differences in gastric epithelial cell proliferation between a H. pylori eradicated group (n = 21) and a not eradicated group (n = 8) after anti-H. pylori eradication therapy to show that increased cell proliferation is associated with H. pylori infection. H. pylori infection was determined by rapi

Monoclonal antibodies against Helicobacter pylori cross-react with human tissue.

BACKGROUND: H. pylori is a causative agent of chronic gastritis. However, the pathogenic mechanism by which H. pylori induces chronic inflammation and epithelial injuries in the gastric and duodenal mucosa is not well known. Investigators have recently reported that some monoclonal antibodies against H. pylori cross-react with the gastric epithelial cells. So, there exists the possibility that the autoimmune mechanism may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis caused by H. pylori. The purpose of his study is to investigate whether the antibodies against H. pylori react with human

Percentage changes in serum pepsinogens are useful as indices of eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

OBJECTIVE: Eradication of Helicobacter pylori has been gaining significance for the treatment of gastroduodenal diseases. Establishment of a precise diagnostic method for H. pylori is of great value. The aim of this study was to establish a new method for precisely judging the eradication of this bacteria. METHODS: We measured serum pepsinogen I (PG I) and pepsinogen II (PG II) levels in 105 cases of peptic ulcer with H. pylori infection before and after anti-H. pylori treatment, determined percentage changes in serum PG I:PG II ratios before and 1 month after the treatment, and established c

Helicobacter pylori infection and risk of peptic ulcer among cirrhotic patients.

There is a higher prevalence of peptic ulcer disease in cirrhotic patients than in the general population. Whether Helicobacter pylori is a risk factor for peptic ulcer in cirrhosis remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a significant correlation between H.pylori infection and peptic ulcer in liver cirrhosis. In a cross-sectional study, 49 cirrhotic patients underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and 75 controls (health examinees) without liver disease were also examined by endoscopy. The presence of H. pylori was assessed by culture, histologic find
