Prefrontal dysfunction in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Recent developments in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) have enabled non-invasive clarification of brain functions in psychiatric disorders with measurement of hemoglobin concentrations as cerebral blood volume. Twenty medication-naïve children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects participated in the present study after giving consent. The relative concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) were measured with frontal probes every 0.1 s during the Stroop color-word task, using 24-channel NIRS machines. During the Stroop color-w

Assessing potency of high- and low-preference reinforcers with respect to response rate and response patterns.

Previous research has suggested that the availability of high-preference stimuli may override the reinforcing efficacy of concurrently available low-preference stimuli under relatively low schedule requirements (e.g., fixed-ratio 1 schedule). It is unknown if similar effects would be obtained under higher schedule requirements. Thus, the current study compared high-preference and low-preference reinforcers under progressively increasing schedule requirements. Results for 3 of the 4 participants indicated that high-preference stimuli maintained responding under higher schedule requirements rela

Stroop performance in bipolar disorder: further evidence for abnormalities in the ventral prefrontal cortex.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar patients are impaired in Stroop task performance, a measure of selective attention. Structural and functional abnormalities in task-associated regions, in particular the prefrontal cortex (PFC), have been reported in this population. We aimed to examine the relationship between functional abnormalities, impaired task performance and the severity of depressive symptoms in bipolar patients. METHODS: Remitted bipolar patients (n = 10; all medicated), either euthymic or with subsyndromal depression, and age-matched control subjects (n = 11) viewed 10 alternating blocks of inco

Visual object agnosia, prosopagnosia, achromatopsia, loss of visual imagery, and autobiographical amnesia following recovery from cortical blindness: case M.H.

A number of higher visual deficits accompanied by severe retrograde autobiographical memory loss following bilateral medial occipital infarctions are described in case M.H. Assessment of M.H.'s visual object agnosia and prospagnosia suggested that he was unable to integrate the elements of a percept to form a meaningful whole. This deficit may occur at the level the percept is encoded into the visual buffer and inspected. M.H. also describes a loss of visual memories, and it is hypothesized that this may similarly be a result of an inability to integrate the elements of the visual representati

Impact of Common Fruit Juices and Toothbrushing on the Discoloration of Primary Teeth.

Tooth discoloration is a common esthetic concern that may influence psychosocial development and peer interactions during childhood. This in vitro study aimed to compare the discoloration potential of fruit juices frequently consumed by children-black mulberry, organic pomegranate, and organic orange-and to evaluate whether brushing with fluoridated or non-fluoridated toothpastes reduces these changes in primary teeth. Eighty sound primary teeth extracted due to trauma, orthodontic indications, or natural exfoliation and free of caries, restorations, enamel defects, or pre-existing discolorati

How does playfulness (re)frame the world? Evidence for selective cognitive and behavioral redirecting in times of adversity.

INTRODUCTION: Do playful people perceive, approach, and respond to their environment and life events differently than less playful individuals? While playfulness has been theorized to affect how individuals frame or reframe situations, this widely accepted premise lacks theoretical specification and empirical validation. This study examined playfulness as a perceptual lens and its potential broader (re)framing effects spanning cognition, emotion, and behavior in the disruptive pandemic context. METHODS: Two groups with contrasting levels of playfulness (high vs. low as measured by the Adult P

Apprehending relational events: The visual world paradigm and the interplay of event perception and language.

When we observe the world, we appreciate not only the colors, shapes, and textures of people and objects, but also how they interact with one another (e.g., in events such as a girl pushing a boy). Although it might seem intuitive that extracting events and other relations would require active effort and multiple fixations, a growing body of vision research suggests that humans rapidly and automatically extract relational information-including the structure of events (i.e., who is acting on whom)-from a single fixation. These findings suggest that aspects of event structure can often be percei

Isolation and food-relevant evaluation of a novel lytic Kayfunavirus phage vB-EcoP-B10 for controlling STEC on food-contact surfaces and in raw beef.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an important foodborne pathogen, and beef-associated contamination remains a major food-safety concern. STEC in beef products is difficult to control when cells persist as biofilms on food-contact surfaces and in processing environments. Here, lytic phage vB-EcoP-B10 was isolated from cattle-farm wastewater using cattle-farm-derived STEC B10 as the host. Its genomic safety, biological properties, antibiofilm activity, and raw-beef efficacy were evaluated. TEM and genome analyses assigned vB-EcoP-B10 to a novel species within Kayfunavirus. Its 40

Encoding of Partially Occluded and Occluding Objects in Primate Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Object segmentation-the process of parsing visual scenes-is essential for object recognition and scene understanding. We investigated how responses of neurons in macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex contribute to object segmentation under partial occlusion. Specifically, we asked whether IT responses to occluding and occluded objects are bound together as in the visual image or linearly separable reflecting their segmentation. We recorded the activity of 121 IT neurons while two male animals performed a shape discrimination task under partial occlusion. We found that for a majority (60%) of n

Acute Pharmacological Effects of 2C-B in Humans: An Observational Study.

2,5-dimethoxy-4-bromophenethylamine (2C-B) is a psychedelic phenylethylamine derivative, structurally similar to mescaline. It is a serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine-2A (5-HT2A), 5-hydroxytryptamine-2B (5-HT2B), and 5-hydroxytryptamine-2C (5-HT2C) receptor partial agonist used recreationally as a new psychoactive substance. It has been reported that 2C-B induces mild psychedelic effects, although its acute pharmacological effects and pharmacokinetics have not yet been fully studied in humans. An observational study was conducted to assess the acute subjective and physiological effects, as well as

Heroin uncertainties: Exploring users' perceptions of fentanyl-adulterated and -substituted 'heroin'.

BACKGROUND: The US is experiencing an unprecedented opioid overdose epidemic fostered in recent years by regional contamination of the heroin supply with the fentanyl family of synthetic opioids. Since 2011 opioid-related overdose deaths in the East Coast state of Massachusetts have more than tripled, with 75% of the 1374 deaths with an available toxicology positive for fentanyl. Fentanyl is 30-50X more potent than heroin and its presence makes heroin use more unpredictable. A rapid ethnographic assessment was undertaken to understand the perceptions and experiences of people who inject drugs

Impaired modulation of attention and emotion in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Fronto-limbic interactions facilitate the generation of task-relevant responses while inhibiting interference from emotionally distracting information. Schizophrenia is associated with deficits in both executive attention and affective regulation. This study aims to elucidate the neural correlates of emotion-attention regulation and shifting in schizophrenia. METHOD: We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to probe the fronto-limbic regions in 16 adults with schizophrenia and 13 matched adults with no history of psychiatric illness. Subjects performed a forced-choice visu

The effect of repetition lag on electrophysiological and haemodynamic correlates of visual object priming.

The modulation of repetition effects by the lag between first and second presentations of a visual object during a speeded semantic judgment task was examined using both scalp event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (efMRI). Four levels of lag were used within a single session, from zero to one, to tens of intervening stimuli, and which allowed partial separation of the effects of interference from the effects of time. Reaction times (RTs) showed that the magnitude of repetition priming decreased as lag increased. The ERP data showed two distinct

Neural correlates of symbolic number comparison in developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a deficit in number processing and arithmetic that affects 3-6% of schoolchildren. The goal of the present study was to analyze cerebral bases of DD related to symbolic number processing. Children with DD aged 9-11 years and matched children with no learning disability history were investigated using fMRI. The two groups of children were controlled for general cognitive factors, such as working memory, reading abilities, or IQ. Brain activations were measured during a number comparison task on pairs of Arabic numerals and a color comparison task on pairs of no
