Dopaminergic function in depressed patients with affective flattening or with impulsivity: [18F]fluoro-L-dopa positron emission tomography study with voxel-based analysis.

A decreased striatal presynaptic dopaminergic function has been reported in depressed patients with affective flattening and psychomotor retardation, using (18)F-fluorodopa positron emission tomography and regions-of-interest. The present study aimed to investigate regional ;[(18)F]dopa uptake in mesolimbic and mesocortical dopaminergic projections with the hypothesis that there should be a decrease in mesolimbic [(18)F]dopa uptake associated with affective flattening and psychomotor retardation. [(18)F]Dopa-positron emission tomography and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging datasets from 1

Pramipexole-induced increased probabilistic discounting: comparison between a rodent model of Parkinson's disease and controls.

The dopamine agonist pramipexole (PPX) can increase impulsiveness, and PPX therapy for neurological diseases (Parkinson's disease (PD) and restless leg syndrome) is associated with impulse control disorders (ICDs) in subpopulations of treated patients. A commonly reported ICD is pathological gambling of which risk taking is a prominent feature. Probability discounting is a measurable aspect of risk taking. We recently developed a probability discounting paradigm wherein intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) serves as the positive reinforcer. Here we used this paradigm to determine the effects o

Is the distinction between tonic and phasic irritability meaningful in 3-year-old children?

Irritability encompasses both normative misbehavior in early childhood and clinically significant problems across development. Recent studies have distinguished between tonic (i.e., persistently angry or grumpy mood) and phasic (i.e., temper tantrums or outbursts) forms of irritability and shown that they have different implications for psychopathology and functioning. However, data on this distinction in young (i.e., preschool aged) children are nonexistent. We utilized data from a longitudinal study of a community sample of 462 3-year-olds followed to age 15. We conducted confirmatory factor

Association between exposure to childhood and lifetime traumatic events and lifetime pathological gambling in a twin cohort.

The present study seeks to estimate the strength of the association between exposure to lifetime traumatic events and gambling problems while accounting for the potential contribution of psychiatric disorders, genetic factors, and family environmental influences. In 2002, structured diagnostic interviews were conducted with 1675 male twins to obtain data on exposure to traumatic events and pathological gambling. Multinomial regression tested for associations between each traumatic event and three levels of problem gambling (1-2 symptoms, at risk; 3-4 symptoms, problem gambling, and 5 or more s

Inattention, Impulsivity, and Hyperactivity in Deaf Children Are Not Due to Deficits in Inhibitory Control, but May Reflect an Adaptive Strategy.

The present study had two main aims: (1) to determine whether deaf children show higher rates of key behaviors of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive behaviors) and of Conduct Disorder-CD-(disruptive, aggressive, or antisocial behaviors) than hearing children, also examining whether the frequency of these behaviors in deaf children varied based on cochlear implant (CI) use, type of school (regular vs. specific for deaf) and level of receptive vocabulary; and (2) to determine whether any behavioral differences between deaf and hearing children could be explained by deficits in inhibit

Behavioural disorders, disability and quality of life in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: although non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) are known to adversely affect disability and health-related quality of life, the impact that specific disorders of reward and motivation have remains unclear. Impulse control disorders are more likely in those with a younger disease onset although there is no strong evidence to date that apathy is related to age of onset or correlated with a longer duration of disease. OBJECTIVE: to examine the effects of apathy and impulse controls disorders on disability and health-related quality of life. METHODS: a total of 99 non-dement

Mutations in LGI1 gene in Japanese families with autosomal dominant lateral temporal lobe epilepsy: the first report from Asian families.

Autosomal dominant lateral temporal lobe epilepsy (ADLTE) caused by LGI1 (leucine-rich gene, glioma-inactivated-1) mutations is a rare familial epileptic syndrome characterized by the auditory ictal manifestation and rare nocturnal generalized seizures. We have examined the sequence of the LGI1 gene in four Japanese families with lateral temporal lobe epilepsy having characteristic auditory features, and identified one novel (1421G>A), and one reported (1418C>T) point mutation each in two families. These two mutations were 3 bp apart in the LGI1 gene and caused adjoining amino acid substitutio

Exploring Diagnostic Classification Prevalence in German and Dutch Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: An International Cross-Sectional Comparative Study.

Classification systems like the DSM-5 and ICD-10 facilitate international comparative research on mental disorders. However, few studies have compared classification distributions in child and adolescent psychiatric settings across countries. This study explored similarities and differences in classification prevalence between German and Dutch children and adolescents referred to psychiatric facilities. Data were retrospectively collected from clinical samples of inpatients and outpatients who underwent diagnostic assessments in Germany (n = 7,089) and the Netherlands (n = 2,574), aged 0-18 ye

A single-center, cross-sectional prevalence study of impulse control disorders in Parkinson disease: association with dopaminergic drugs.

The current study aimed at establishing the prevalence of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and their association with demographic, drug-related, and disease-related characteristics. We performed a single-center cross-sectional study of 805 PD patients. Impulse control disorders were investigated with the Questionnaire for Impulsive Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease; also comorbid neuropsychiatric complications (dementia, delusions, visual hallucinations) were investigated with clinical interviews and ad hoc instruments (Parkinson Psychosis Ques

Neural correlates of social cognition in BPD: a review of MRI evidence.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by unstable relationships, affective dysregulation, and impulsivity. A growing body of evidence suggests that deficits in socio-cognitive domains (i.e., mentalization, empathy, and emotion recognition) contribute to the core psychopathology of BPD. However, the neural circuits underlying these deficits remain inconclusive. METHODS: We conducted a review of studies retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO. We included structural MRI (sMRI) and functional MRI (fMRI) studies that compared individuals with BPD or borderline trai

Abnormal neurite density and orientation dispersion in frontal lobe link to elevated hyperactive/impulsive behaviours in young adults with traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury is a major public health concern. A significant proportion of individuals experience post-traumatic brain injury behavioural impairments, especially in attention and inhibitory control domains. Traditional diffusion-weighted MRI techniques, such as diffusion tensor imaging, have provided tools to assess white matter structural disruptions reflecting the long-term brain tissue alterations associated with traumatic brain injury. The recently developed neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging is a more advanced diffusion MRI modality, which provides more refined c

A controlled family history study of Tourette's syndrome, II: Alcoholism, drug abuse, and obesity.

The behaviors associated with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS), including impulsive, compulsive, attentional, learning, conduct, and mood disorders, have often been described as substrates for the development of alcoholism and/or drug abuse. As the authors' experience with TS pedigrees indicated that alcoholism and/or drug abuse were common in relatives of TS probands, they examined, by the family history technique, 1750 relatives over 14 years of age in 130 TS proband and 25 control families. Significant, life-disrupting problems with alcoholism and/or drug abuse were present in 14.5% of

Suicide attempt by hanging in preadolescent children: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is now among the five top causes of death in youth worldwide. However, during the preadolescent period, suicidal behaviour is rare and difficult to define because the cognitive level of young children limits their ability to plan and understand the consequences or the finality of suicide. There is virtually no information about preadolescent suicidal behaviour in Nigeria. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the presentation and psychosocial issues associated with preadolescent suicidal attempt using the 'hanging' method in Nigeria. METHODS: Three case scenarios of suicide attempt by

New insights into Brunner syndrome and potential for targeted therapy.

We report two families with Brunner syndrome living in one state of Australia. The first family had a predicted protein-truncating variant of monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) (p.S251KfsX2). Affected males had mild intellectual disability (ID), obsessive behaviour, limited friendships and were introverted and placid during clinical interview. The family disclosed episodic explosive aggression after a diagnosis was made. The second family had a missense variant in MAOA (p.R45W). Affected males had borderline-mild ID, attention deficit disorder and limited friendships. One had a history of explosive ag

Effects of dopamine agonist dose and gender on the prognosis of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that Parkinson's disease patients have an increased risk of impulse control disorders, and that the disorders frequently co-exist with depressive symptoms. There have been no previous large-scale prospective studies investigating predictive and prognostic factors of these disorders. METHODS: A population of 290 Parkinson's disease patients was studied at baseline and approximately 15 months later. The same screening methodology was used at both time-points (demographic and medication data together with the Questionnaire for Impulsive-com
