On the respiratory quotient (RQ) of termites (Insecta: Isoptera).

The respiratory quotient (RQ) at 28 degrees C was determined by Warburg manometry in 23 species of termites from the Mbalmayo Forest Reserve (Cameroon) and three sub-tropical species cultured under laboratory conditions in the U.K. or freshly collected in Australia. The data are tabulated with other recently reported RQs (determined by manometry or GC) and with measured CH(4) emission rates to provide a survey of 29 species covering both lower and higher termites in all major trophic (functional) categories. In all species, except the wood-feeding Coptotermes acinaciformis and the soil-feeding

Toward Sustainable Aesthetic Transparent Wood from a Fast-Growing Hardwood Species: Paulownia Wood Templates Infused with Epoxy Bioresin.

Lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive renewable resource for the development of engineered materials in the framework of a green economy. Transparent wood (TW) products show great potential in green architecture, energy saving building, optical devices, electronics, energy storage, and conversion devices. The fabrication of TW products proceeds through the delignification of bulk wood samples followed by infiltration with a refractive index-matched polymer. This study is focused on Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud., a fast-growing species rarely investigated, is characterized by low-densi

Solid-Phase Extraction at High pH as a Promising Tool for Targeted Isolation of Biologically Active Fractions of Humic Acids.

A search for novel sources of biologically active compounds is at the top of the agenda for biomedical technologies. Natural humic substances (HSs) contain a large variety of different chemotypes, such as condensed tannins, hydrolyzable tannins, terpenoids, lignins, etc. The goal of this work was to develop an efficient separation technique based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the isolation of narrow fractions of HS with higher biological activity compared to the initial material. We used lignite humic acid as the parent humic material, which showed moderate inhibition activity toward bet

Comprehensive fruit quality assessment and identification of aroma-active compounds in green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.).

The wrinkled pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a type of chili pepper domesticated in northwestern China, with a characteristic flavor. Fifteen wrinkled and four smooth-skinned pepper varieties were evaluated for morphology, texture, color, nutrients, capsaicinoids, and volatile compounds at the mature fruit stage. The sensory evaluation showed wrinkled pepper was superior to smooth pepper in texture, and it has a highly significant correlation (p < 0.01) with cuticle thickness, maximum penetrating force, lignin content, and moisture content. Citric acid was the major organic acid in peppers, acc

Does Host Plant Drive Variation in Microbial Gut Communities in a Recently Shifted Pest?

Biotic interactions can modulate the responses of organisms to environmental stresses, including diet changes. Gut microbes have substantial effects on diverse ecological and evolutionary traits of their hosts, and microbial communities can be highly dynamic within and between individuals in space and time. Modulations of the gut microbiome composition and their potential role in the success of a species to maintain itself in a new environment have been poorly studied to date. Here we examine this question in a large wood-boring beetle Cacosceles newmannii (Cerambycidae), that was recently fou

[Effects of warming on physicochemical property of Cunninghamia lanceolata branch and leaf litter in subtropical plantation].

At the regional scale, substrate properties are the key factors driving litter decomposition rate. In this study, soil temperature was increased by buried heating cables to explore the impacts of climate warming on the physical and chemical properties in branch and leaf of Cunninghamia lanceolata litter. The results showed that after 5 years of soil warming (4 ℃), the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and water-soluble substance in branch litter increased by 35.2%, 40.8% and 7.6%, while that in leaf litter increased by 41.2%, 45.9% and 5.9%, respectively. The contents of carbon (C), cel

Compositional analysis of bio-oils from hydrothermal liquefaction of tobacco residues using two-dimensional gas chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

Sustainable energy from biomass is one of the most promising alternative energy sources and is expected to partially replace fossil fuels. Tobacco industries have normally rid their processing residues by landfilling or incineration, affecting the environment negatively. These residues can be used to either extract high-value chemicals or generate bio-energy via hydrothermal liquefaction. The main liquid product or bio-oil consists of highly complicated chemicals. In this work, the bio-oil from hydrothermal liquefaction of tobacco processing residues was generated in a batch reactor at biomass

Blue Copper Peroxidase and Phthalocyanine Conjugate: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications.

Trametes versicolor can degrade bark as a source for carbon necessity. Therefore, it secretes lignin peroxidase, mangan peroxidase, and laccase. The laccase enzyme was produced in high yield at pH of 5 and glucose concentration of 10 g L-1. In optimized medium, the enzyme activity was between 200 and 250 U L-1 when an inducer was absent. It was seen that the activity reached 400 U L-1 when phenol was used as an inducer. The molecular weight of purified laccase was found to be 80 kDa with SDS-PAGE, and kinetic constant Km and Vmax values for 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline)-6-sulfonate wer

Halotolerant microbial consortia able to degrade highly recalcitrant plant biomass substrate.

The microbial degradation of plant-derived compounds under salinity stress remains largely underexplored. The pretreatment of lignocellulose material, which is often needed to improve the production of lignocellulose monomers, leads to high salt levels, generating a saline environment that raises technical considerations that influence subsequent downstream processes. Here, we constructed halotolerant lignocellulose degrading microbial consortia by enriching a salt marsh soil microbiome on a recalcitrant carbon and energy source, i.e., wheat straw. The consortia were obtained after six cycles

A systematic review on the composting of green waste: Feedstock quality and optimization strategies.

Green waste (GW) is an important fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW). The composting of lignocellulosic GW is challenging due to its low decomposition rate. Recently, an increasing number of studies that include strategies to optimize GW composting appeared in the literature. This literature review focuses on the physicochemical quality of GW and on the effect of strategies used to improve the process and product quality. A systematic search was carried out, using keywords, and 447 papers published between 2002 and 2018 were identified. After a screening process, 41 papers addressing feeds

Study of processes influencing bioavailability of pesticides in wood-soil systems: Effect of different factors.

Lignocellulosic wastes and by-products containing lignin are now available in large amounts from forestry and industrial activities, and could be promising organic materials for the biosorption of pesticides by soils in order to reduce point-source pollution. Adding these materials to soil requires understanding the process of pesticide sorption-desorption by wood-soils, as sorption capacity could increase, with changes in pesticide bioavailability and final fate. The objective of this work was to study the effect that pine and oak wood added to soils had on the sorption/desorption of the pest

ABCB1 and ABCB19 auxin transporters have synergistic effects on early and late Arabidopsis anther development.

Arabidopsis abcb1 abcb19 double mutants defective in the auxin transporters ABCB1/PGP1 and ABCB19/PGP19 are altered in stamen elongation, anther dehiscence and pollen maturation. To assess the contribution of these transporters to stamen development we performed phenotypic, histological analyses, and in situ hybridizations on abcb1 and abcb19 single mutant flowers. We found that pollen maturation and anther dehiscence are precocious in the abcb1 but not in the abcb19 mutant. Accordingly, endothecium lignification is altered only in abcb1 anthers. Both abcb1 and abcb1 abcb19 stamens also show a

Multi-omics analysis reveals Protein Kinase A-associated regulatory remodeling during adaptation of Trichoderma reesei to lignocellulosic substrate.

The filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei is a major industrial source of holocellulolytic enzymes, and its response to complex carbon sources is regulated by nutrient-sensing mechanisms, including the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway. Here, we integrated transcriptomics, quantitative proteomics, and phosphoproteomics to analyze PKAc1-associated responses in the parental strain QM9414 and a Δpkac1 strain cultivated under glucose or sugarcane bagasse conditions. Deletion of pkac1 was associated with altered growth-related phenotypes and reduced extr

Valorization of sorghum stalk lignocellulose for xylooligosaccharide production: process optimization and chromatographic characterization.

Sorghum stalk (Sorghum bicolor) represents an abundant and underutilized lignocellulosic biomass with significant potential for the generation of value-added bioproducts within biorefinery systems. In the present study, sorghum stalk (SS) biomass was valorized for the production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) through alkaline extraction of xylan, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. SS was treated with alkali to extract high-purity xylan, where increasing NaOH concentrations significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced xylan recovery. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that xylan extracted usi

RADIX: a deep learning framework that maps root barriers across species and reveals genetic and environmental contributions.

Root anatomical barriers, including the suberized and lignified walls of the endodermis and exodermis, and cortical aerenchyma, regulate water and nutrient transport, gas exchange, and rhizosphere interaction. Their adaptive function places them as an important target for breeding environmentally resilient plant species. Quantifying these structures at high resolution is a manual bottleneck that limits experimental scale. We present RADIX (Root Anatomy Deep- learning Image segmentation across species and platforms), a framework that adapts a large self-supervised vision-transformer foundation

Low-Temperature Thermal Pretreatment of Tobacco-Stem Extraction Wastewater: Volatile Fatty Acid Redistribution and Short-Term Methane Production Response.

Tobacco-stem extraction wastewater from papermaking-based reconstituted-tobacco production is a small-volume, acidic, high-strength side-stream. It can undermine downstream anaerobic wastewater treatment processes, such as upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) treatment, especially under short hydraulic retention time (HRT). The inhibition effects result from its high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and propionate-skewed volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile. Given its small volume and the availability of low-grade heat on-site, a mild pretreatment compatible with existing infrastructure is desirabl

Wood-derived cellulose aerogel decorated with high Zr-MOF loading for simple and efficient extraction of etomidate analogs from urine and e-cigarette samples.

Etomidate and its analogs can produce euphoria and addiction, and their recent abuse has led to an increasing number of poisoning and fatal cases. Thus, they are classified as controlled psychotropic drugs. This work proposed small-sized wood aerogel-supported zirconium metal-organic framework (UiO-66) particles for the extraction of trace etomidate and its analogs from urine and e-cigarette samples. Owing to the removal of lignin and hemicellulose, the delignified wood aerogel exhibited enhanced internal pore structures and exposed functional groups, which facilitated the immobilization of mo
