Evaluation of the NG-Test CARBA 5 Lateral Flow Assay with an IMP-27-Producing Morganella morganii and Other Morganellaceae.

An isolate of Morganella morganii (MMOR1) that tested susceptible to 3rd/4th-generation cephalosporins and intermediate to meropenem was characterized as positive for NDM and IMP carbapenemases by NG-Test CARBA 5. Our objective was to further investigate this result, given the inconsistent susceptibility profile and unusual epidemiological profile for our region. The MMOR1 isolate was retested for antimicrobial susceptibilities and characterized for carbapenemase production. MMOR1 tested susceptible to ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefepime, aztreonam, and ertapenem, and intermediate to meropenem

Microbial epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns of wound infection in Ethiopia: a meta-analysis of laboratory-based cross-sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Wound infections are responsible for significant human morbidity and mortality worldwide. Specifically, surgical site infections are the third most commonly reported nosocomial infections accounting approximately a quarter of such infections. This systematic review and meta-analysis is, therefore, aimed to determine microbial profiles cultured from wound samples and their antimicrobial resistance patterns in Ethiopia. METHODS: Literature search was carried out through visiting electronic databases and indexing services including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Google Scholar.

Carbapenem therapy is associated with improved survival compared with piperacillin-tazobactam for patients with extended-spectrum β-lactamase bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of piperacillin-tazobactam (PTZ) for the treatment of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) bacteremia is controversial. We compared 14-day mortality of PTZ vs carbapenems as empiric therapy in a cohort of patients with ESBL bacteremia who all received definitive therapy with a carbapenem. METHODS: Patients hospitalized between January 2007 and April 2014 with monomicrobial ESBL bacteremia were included. A decrease of >3 doubling dilutions in the minimum inhibitory concentration for third-generation cephalosporins tested in combination with 4 µg/mL of clavulanic a

On two reports associated with James Wood-Mason and Alfred William Alcock published by the Indian Museum and the Indian Marine Survey between 1890 and 1891: implications for malacostracan nomenclature.

Two rare documents associated with the Indian Museum and the Indian Marine Survey for the administrative year April 1890 to March 1891 have been examined and found to have nomenclatural consequences for malacostracan crustaceans. Even though they constitute available published works according to the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature, these reports have rarely been cited. Dating these two publications is of importance as they make decapod scientific names available and, in a few instances, describe the same taxa. After searching the collections deposited in the Asian and African Ro

Bacteriological Profile of Patients With Stroke-Associated Pneumonia and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Pathogens: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is the aftermath of aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions or stomach content. Mechanical ventilation and lowered immunity and consciousness facilitate the etiopathogenesis of SAP. Antibiotic prophylaxis and repeated culture and sensitivity testing dampen the drug susceptibility patterns of the pathogens. We accomplished this study to determine the bacteriological profile of patients with SAP and the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the pathogenic bacteria. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was executed from August 2022 to

Bacteria Detected in both Urine and Open Wounds in Nursing Home Residents: a Pilot Study.

Nursing home residents are at a greater risk of developing pressure injuries that develop into an open wound, which can become colonized with bacteria. Understanding the factors that influence microbial colonization of open wounds can lead to the prevention of infections. The relationship between bacteria found in urine and those in open wounds is currently unknown. To determine if bacterial species colonizing open wounds are also found in the urine, we conducted a pilot study with nursing home residents, comparing bacterial species present in the urine with those present in wounds between the

Class D β-lactamases: a reappraisal after five decades.

Despite 70 years of clinical use, β-lactam antibiotics still remain at the forefront of antimicrobial chemotherapy. The major challenge to these life-saving therapeutics is the presence of bacterial enzymes (i.e., β-lactamases) that can hydrolyze the β-lactam bond and inactivate the antibiotic. These enzymes can be grouped into four classes (A-D). Among the most genetically diverse are the class D β-lactamases. In this class are β-lactamases that can inactivate the entire spectrum of β-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems). Class D β-lactamases are mostly found in G

Impact of Pre-Existing Urinary Antimicrobial Agents on Culture Yield, Diagnostic Accuracy, and the Detection of Significant Bacteriuria in Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-existing antibacterial substances (ABS) in urine can significantly impact the diagnostic and therapeutic management of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by altering microbial culture outcomes and influencing the detection and resistance profiles of uropathogens. The presence of pre-existing ABS may lead to false-negative or insignificant culture results, affecting clinical decision-making. This study aims to assess the impact of pre-existing ABS on culture positivity, microbial distribution, and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in outpatients, particularly those with prior an
