Spironolactone improves structure and increases tone in the cerebral vasculature of male spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that ischemic cerebral infarct size is related to cerebral vessel structure. Spironolactone, a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, decreases ischemic cerebral infarct size in male spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats (SHRSP). Therefore, we hypothesized that chronic spironolactone treatment would improve cerebral artery structure in the SHRSP. METHODS: Six-week-old male SHRSP were treated with spironolactone (2.5 mg/day) for 6 weeks and were compared to untreated control SHRSP and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats. Using a pressurized arteriograp

Effects of instilled combustion-derived particles in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Part II: Pulmonary responses.

A consistent association between exposure to high concentrations of ambient particulate matter (PM) and excess cardiopulmonary-related morbidity and mortality has been observed in numerous epidemiological studies, across many different geographical locations. To elicit a similar response in a controlled laboratory setting, spontaneously hypertensive rats were exposed to an oil combustion-derived PM (HP-12) and monitored for changes in pulmonary function and indices of pulmonary injury. Rats were implanted with radiotelemeters to monitor electrocardiogram, heart rate, systemic arterial blood pr

[Feasibility and reliability of a transtelephonic 12 leads ECG].

Feasibility and reliability of a 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG), recorded by the patient himself and transmitted via telephone are mandatory for prehospital diagnosis of myocardial ischemia in patients with coronary heart disease. In this study, a 12-lead ECG recorded by patients and transmitted to the cardiology call center via telephone (Tele-ECG; model CG-7100; Card Guard) was compared with the conventional 12-lead ECG from the same patient recorded at the same time in 128 cases. The Tele-ECGs received by the call center were compared with conventional ECG by two cardiologists and one inte

Disturbance of cardiovascular circadian rhythms by pertussis vaccine in freely-moving rats.

Vaccination of young children with diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis (DTPoP) vaccine is effective in preventing outbreaks of whooping cough but adverse events sometimes occur. This pilot study shows that in freely-moving rats, multiple treatment with DTPoP (at day 0 and day 5, 6 ml/kg i.v.) increased heart rate (HR) for 5 days after the first treatment and decreased diastolic blood pressure (DBP) for at least 26 days after the first treatment and inhibited the circadian rhythm of HR and DBP for at least 10 days. DTPo vaccine, containing no pertussis vaccine, was free of such eff

Arterial oxygen saturation in severely disabled people: effect of oral feeding in the sitting position.

Control of the circulatory and respiratory systems is especially important in severely disabled people. The purpose of this study was to clarify the response of hemoglobin oxygen saturation level (SpO(2)), pulse rate, and respiratory rate during oral feeding in severely disabled persons. Continuous measurement of these variables was done by pulse oximetry and respiratory inductance plethysmography under two experimental settings in eight severely disabled persons aged 14-28 yrs. Setting I consisted of the following three procedures: (a) a 30-min period in the supine position, (b) a 50-min peri

Placing a bone graft more posteriorly may reduce the risk of pedicle screw breakage: analysis of an unexpected case of pedicle screw breakage.

Telemeterized internal spinal fixation devices were implanted in a patient with degenerative instability and a narrow spinal canal in order to measure the fixator loads during daily activities. Anterior interbody fusion was performed three weeks later. During walking, the typical maximum flexion bending moments were 10 N m in the left and 5 N m in the right fixator. On removal of the implants three months later, a fatigue fracture was found not on the high loaded left side but in the upper right pedicle screw. The crack started on the caudal side of the cross-sectional area and progressed cran

Elements on the move: How ungulate migration expands Alpine biogeochemical footprints.

Through depositing waste products, animals influence the spatial distribution of elements across landscapes. Yet the relationship between animal movement and element distribution remains poorly characterized. We developed a spatially explicit agent-based model to test how migratory versus resident red deer (Cervus elaphus) influence nitrogen redistribution across an alpine landscape in the Central-Eastern Italian Alps. Specifically, we asked how both local-scale and landscape-scale movement alter the spatial extent and magnitude of nitrogen deposition. We parameterized our model with GPS telem

Adaptive Autocorrelation Based Heart Rate Estimation From Single-Axis Seismocardiogram: A Comprehensive Benchmark Across Six Diverse Datasets.

We introduce AACFD (Adaptive Autocorrelation Function Detector), a lightweight, fully automatic pipeline for estimating window-averaged heart rate (HR) from a single-axis seismocardiogram (SCG) without ECG calibration or machine learning. AACFD combines two periodicity detectors-(i) a YIN-style difference-function analysis of an adaptive SCG envelope and (ii) a short-window autocorrelation branch-operating on 3 s segments. The two branches are fused by feature-aware weighting based on signal-quality indices and multi-scale features; and a Hampel filter plus temporal consistency checks remove o

Improving Medication Reconciliation at Discharge: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Medication discrepancies remain a persistent patient safety concern despite decades of quality improvement efforts. Research indicates that about half of hospitalized adults experience at least one such discrepancy after discharge, often stemming from unclear clinician roles and poor communication among nurses, physicians, and pharmacists. Understanding nurses' perspectives is critical to designing interventions that will improve medication reconciliation and enhance patient safety at discharge. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore RNs' perspectives of medication reconciliation du

Fentanyl-Xylazine Co-Administration Leads to Sustained Depression of Breathing and Body Temperature Likely Driven by μ-Opioid and α 2 -Adrenergic Pathway Interactions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It's been reported that illicit drug supplies increasingly contain the α 2 -adrenergic agonist, xylazine, alongside fentanyl, yet the pharmacological basis for the greater lethality of this combination remains unclear. Prior research has shown that μ-opioid (Oprm1) receptors, on which fentanyl acts, and α 2 -adrenergic (Adra2a) receptors, on which xylazine acts, are both expressed within brainstem circuits that govern autonomic control, especially the parabrachial (PB) and Kölliker-Fuse (KF) nuclei that regulate respiration. Thus, we propose that co-activation of these

Microglia regulate sleep and thermoregulatory stability.

Sleep fragmentation disrupts physiological homeostasis, including thermoregulation, metabolism, and immune signaling; however, cellular mechanisms that stabilize core body temperature and sleep architecture during disrupted sleep remain poorly understood. Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system and play a central role in integrating neuroimmune signaling with hypothalamic regulation of thermoregulation and sleep-wake control. We tested the hypothesis that microglia are required to maintain both thermoregulatory and sleep stability during physiological sleep and wh

Curcumin attenuates heatstroke-induced myocardial injury and ventricular arrhythmias by regulating the BAX/BCL-2/caspase-3 pathway.

Background: heatstroke (HS) is characterized by a high incidence of cardiac injury and multiple complications, with no specific therapeutic agents available. Curcumin (CUR) has demonstrated cardioprotective effects, but its role in HS-induced myocardial injury and arrhythmias remains poorly understood. Objective: this study aims to examine the protective effects of CUR in HS-induced myocardial injury and ventricular arrhythmias and elucidate its mechanism via the BAX/BCL-2/caspase-3 apoptotic pathway. Materials and methods: a rat model of HS was established, consisting of three groups: control

Empowering Early Recovery: The Role of Impella 5.5 in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy Complicated by Cardiogenic Shock.

Introduction: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), also known as stress cardiomyopathy or Broken Heart Syndrome, is a reversible, transient state of myocardial dyskinesis and apical ballooning. Infrequently, TCM may progress to severe life-threatening complications such as cardiogenic shock. Early mechanical circulatory support (MCS) is crucial to myocardial recovery in these cases. We present one of the first cases of TCM successfully treated with the advanced micro-axial minimally invasive Impella 5.5 with SmartAssist MCS device. Case Presentation: A female in her late 70s with a history of hypot

Actigraphy-based sleep disruption and diurnal biomarkers of autonomic function in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep architectural disruption is associated with atrial fibrillation (AF); however, associated autonomic influences remain unclear and it is unknown if this detriment persists during wakefulness. We hypothesize sleep disruption and autonomic dysfunction have diurnal patterning in patients with paroxysmal AF. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Sleep Apnea and Atrial Fibrillation Biomarkers and Electrophysiologic Atrial Triggers (SAFEBEAT) study designed to examine paroxysmal AF and sleep apnea, including simultaneous collection of continuous electrocardiogram monitoring (Heartra

Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Advanced Age, and Diabetes Mellitus Are Associated with De Novo Atrial Fibrillation after Cardiac Surgery.

Background: Postoperative de novo atrial fibrillation (POAF) is one of the most frequently encountered complications following cardiac surgery. Despite the identification of several risk factors, the link between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and POAF has barely been examined. The objective of this prospective observational study was to determine whether severe SDB is associated with POAF in patients after elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Study design and methods: The incidence and preoperative predictors of in-hospital POAF were assessed in 272 patients undergoing C

Effects of excess sodium consumption on arterial function in C57BL/6 mice.

Excess sodium consumption contributes to arterial dysfunction in humans. The C57BL/6 strain of mice has been used to identify mechanisms by which arterial dysfunction occurs after excess sodium consumption. However, there are concerns that C57BL/6 mice have strain-specific resistance to high-sodium (HS) diet-induced hypertension. To address this concern, we performed a meta-analysis to determine if excess sodium consumption in C57BL/6 mice induces arterial dysfunction. Databases were searched for HS versus standard diet studies that measured arterial function [i.e., systolic blood pressure (BP

Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone contributes to an anti-inflammatory response to lipopolysaccharide.

OBJECTIVE: During infection, metabolism and immunity react dynamically to promote survival through mechanisms that remain unclear. Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) cleavage products are produced and released in the brain and in the pituitary gland. One POMC cleavage product, alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), is known to regulate food intake and energy expenditure and has anti-inflammatory effects. However, it is not known whether α-MSH is required to regulate physiological anti-inflammatory responses. We recently developed a novel mouse model with a targeted mutation in Pomc (Pomctm1/tm

The Novel, Clinical-Stage Soluble Guanylate Cyclase Activator BI 685509 Protects from Disease Progression in Models of Renal Injury and Disease.

Activation of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) to restore cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and improve functionality of nitric oxide (NO) pathways impaired by oxidative stress is a potential treatment of diabetic and chronic kidney disease. We report the pharmacology of BI 685509, a novel, orally active small molecule sGC activator with disease-modifying potential. BI 685509 and human sGC α1/β1 heterodimer containing a reduced heme group produced concentration-dependent increases in cGMP that were elevated modestly by NO, whereas heme-free sGC and BI 685509 greatly enhanced cGMP with no ef
