Colonization of urinary catheters by Escherichia coli and Providencia stuartii in a laboratory model system.

A laboratory model system was developed to investigate the progressive colonization of urinary catheters by Escherichia coli Providencia stuartii, prominent organisms in the polymicrobial bacteriuria of the long-term catheterized urinary tract. We hypothesized that colonization of the catheter and artificial urine by E. coli is influenced by the presence of P. stuartii. E. coli or P. stuartii in pure culture both rapidly colonized the artificial urine and catheters, and both persisted throughout all experiments. In systems containing both organisms, P. stuartii occurred in significantly higher

Helicobacter pylori infection in children with antral gastrin cell hyperfunction.

Antral gastrin cell hyperfunction (AGCH) is a rare syndrome characterized by persistent hypergastrinemia and important peptic symptoms in the absence of a gastrin-producing tumor. The pathogenesis of AGCH is still unknown and debated. Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection has been reported as a possible cause of sustained hypergastrinemia. To assess the relevance of Hp infection in pediatric AGCH patients, Hp status, G cell function, acid secretion, and antral G and D cell populations were investigated in six children presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown origin, sideropenic anemia

Helicobacter pylori associated dyspepsia in 208 patients from southern Saudi Arabia.

The frequency of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in 208 patients with upper gastrointestinal tract symptoms from the Southern Province of Saudi Arabia was studied prospectively. The occurrence of HP was documented histologically and using a rapid urease test in antral endoscopic biopsies. Our results showed that 82.2% of the 208 patients included were positive for HP with a male:female ratio of approximately 1:1 (88:83). The age range was 14 to 80 years and the median age was 38.2 years. The frequencies of HP infection among Saudi and non-Saudi patients were 86% and 71%, respectively. Frequ

Serodiagnosis of Helicobacter pylori: comparison of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) have been developed to diagnose Helicobacter pylori infection. However, the methods are not standardized. We therefore prospectively evaluated the sensitivities and specificities of ELISAs developed in the United States and the United Kingdom in a study population comprising 41 consecutive symptomatic outpatients and 35 volunteers. At endoscopy, multiple biopsies were obtained for histology and culture and stained sections were graded for chronic gastritis, active chronic gastritis, and density of H. pylori. Serum samples were analyzed for H. pylori

Helicobacter pylori-related gastroduodenal disease in children. Diagnostic utility of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

To evaluate the accuracy of IgG and IgA serological tests in establishing a diagnosis of Helicobacter (Campylobacter) pylori gastric infection, 60 children presenting with chronic abdominal pain were prospectively studied. Endoscopic antral biopsies were obtained and analyzed for the presence of H. pylori using three standard methods: culture and identification of bacterial isolates, microscopic examination for morphologically characteristic bacteria, and urease production by the biopsy specimen. Concomitantly obtained serum samples were analyzed for the presence of IgG and IgA antibodies agai

Campylobacter pylori infection in biopsy specimens of gastric antrum: laboratory diagnosis and estimation of sampling error.

Campylobacter pylori infection was sought in 382 consecutive patients referred for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Five antral biopsy specimens were taken from each patient: one was inserted into a CLO-test to detect the urease activity of C pylori, two were sent for histological analysis where multiple sections were stained by the Warthin-Starry silver method, and two were sent for microbiological evaluation by Gram stain and culture. A patient was deemed to be infected when C pylori was cultured or seen in either the histological sections or the Gram stain of the biopsy smear. One hundred

Mutations Influencing the Assimilation of Nitrogen by Yersinia pestis.

Cells of 20 isolates of Yersinia (Pasteurella) pestis exhibited an unusual nutritional requirement which could be fulfilled by glycine or l-threonine. Meiotrophic mutants which required neither of these amino acids (Gly/Thr(+)) were isolated from cultures of all 20 strains at a frequency of 10(-7). Wild-type and Gly/Thr(+) cells of 14 strains failed to utilize l-amino acids or urea (0.01 m) as primary sources of nitrogen and grew slowly in the presence of low concentrations of NH(4) (+) (<== 5 mm). Cells of six strains (termed N(+)) utilized certain l-amino acids and urea (0.01 m) as primary s

[Molecular mechanisms of chronic gastric mucosal inflammation induced by Helicobacter pylori via immune evasion].

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) persistently colonizes the gastric mucosa and induces sustained inflammation, making it a major driver of the development and progression of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer. Its pathogenicity does not rely on direct tissue damage inflicted by a single virulence factor, but rather on the coordinated actions of multiple factors, including cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA), vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA), lipopolysaccharide, and urease that disrupt the gastric epithelial barrier and perturb mucosal immune homeostasis. Concurrently, H. p

Nitrogen-Centric Molecular Mechanisms in Crop Plants Under Elevated CO2: Interactions, Responses, and Implications.

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is transforming the climate space in which plants grow, severely affecting crop physiology and crop productivity. Elevated CO2 enhances photosynthesis and biomass; however, it can nitrogen (N) metabolism, inhibiting the nutritional value and the yield capacity of crops. The most important central N-regulated protein machineries are: transporters, nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and urease which control N assimilation, distribution and remobilization in crop plants. With high CO2

A lignocellulose-degrading synthetic microbial community alters physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and functional gene potential during green waste-cattle manure co-vermicomposting.

Co-vermicomposting high-lignin green waste with cattle manure can improve nutrient supply and microbial activity; however, this technology remains limited in terms of lignocellulose degradation efficiency and product quality improvement. This study evaluated the effects of 5% calcium superphosphate (SSP), 5% synthetic lignocellulose-degrading microbial communities (SynComs), and their combined addition on vermicompost quality, microbial communities, and the functional potential related to carbohydrate degradation and nitrogen cycling. The results showed that all treatments maintained a neutral

The Assembly of Alginate-Chitosan-Xanthine Hydrogel and Halomonas Improves Soil Quality of Protected Crop Growth Under Saline-Alkali Stress.

Soil saline-alkali stress has become a great risk, leading to significant decline in crop yields, especially in protected agriculture that is frequently threatened by excessive chemical fertilization. There is an urgent need to develop friendly strategies for improving the quality of saline-alkali soil. Microbial inoculants are promising agents in attenuating soil stress, but their colonization ability in the crop rhizosphere is often limited. To improve the efficiency of microbial inoculants, this study constructed the assembly of a salt-tolerant bacterium Halomonas (Homs) and a hydrogel comp

Nickel-based Enzymes and Compounds: Antimicrobial Potential, Biomedical Applications, and Toxicity Risks.

Nickel-dependent enzymes are a class of metalloenzymes that require nickel as a key component for their biological activity. These enzymes are essential for various biochemical processes in certain organisms, particularly bacteria, archaea, and some eukaryotes. To date, nine nickel- dependent enzymes involved in both redox and non-redox reactions have been characterized. By targeting these enzymes, researchers aim to develop innovative strategies to combat bacterial infections and reduce reliance on conventional antibiotics. Hydrogenases and urease are two key enzymes that show promise in addr
