Changing trends in surgical hair restoration: Use of Google Trends and the ISHRS practice census survey.

BACKGROUND: Hair loss affects most people at some point in their lifetime, causing anxiety and decreased self-esteem. There are multiple surgical and nonsurgical treatments available, with the surgical options having greater and longer-lasting effects. Such treatments have evolved over time with advances in technology and research, with numerous patients researching these treatments on Google. Many surgeons who provide these treatments belong to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS). AIMS: To investigate trends in surgical hair restoration treatment from both the surg

Genetic Adaptations of an Island Pit-Viper to a Unique Sedentary Life with Extreme Seasonal Food Availability.

The Shedao pit-viper (Gloydius shedaoensis) exhibits an extreme sedentary lifestyle. The island species exclusively feeds on migratory birds during migratory seasons and experiences prolonged hibernation and aestivation period each year (up to eight months). The sedentary strategy reduces energy expenditure, but may trigger a series of adverse effects and the snakes have likely evolved genetic modifications to alleviate these effects. To investigate the genetic adaptations, we sequenced and compared the transcriptomes of the Shedao pit-viper and its closest mainland relative, the black eyebrow

Supraorbital Keyhole Approach: Lessons Learned from 106 Operative Cases.

OBJECTIVE: The supraorbital keyhole approach through an eyebrow incision has been a potentially less invasive approach as an alternative to the standard pterional craniotomy. We aimed to review procedures for anterior and middle cranial fossa lesions and identify lessons learned from addressing various pathologies through this approach. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 106 consecutive patients who underwent this approach. We documented patients' age, sex, pathology, clinical results, extent of tumor resection, complications, use of endoscope, and cosmetic results. RESULTS: Our series add

Supraorbital vs Endo-Orbital Routes to the Lateral Skull Base: A Quantitative and Qualitative Anatomic Study.

BACKGROUND: Various extensions of the supraorbital approach reach the lateral and parasellar middle cranial fossa regions by removing the orbital rim and greater/lesser sphenoid wings. Recent proposals of a purely endoscopic ventral transorbital pathway to these regions heighten the need to compare these surgical windows. OBJECTIVE: To detail the lateral and parasellar middle cranial fossa regions and quantify exposures by 2 surgical windows (transcranial and transorbital) through anatomic study. METHODS: In 5 cadaveric specimens (10 sides), dissections consisted of 3 stages: stage 1 began w

Quantitative analysis of facial palsy using a three-dimensional facial motion measurement system.

OBJECTIVE: The prognosis for facial nerve palsy (FNP) depends on its severity. Currently, many clinicians use the Yanagihara, House-Brackmann, and/or Sunnybrook grading systems to assess FNP. Although these assessments are performed by experts, inter- and intra-observer disagreements have been demonstrated. The quantitative and objective analyses of the degree of FNP would be preferred to monitor functional changes and to plan and evaluate therapeutic interventions in patients with FNP. Numerous two-dimensional (2-D) assessments have been proposed, however, the limitations of 2-D assessment ha

Cutaneous innervation of the human face as assessed by skin biopsy.

The morphology of cutaneous sensory and autonomic innervation in human trigeminal territory is still unknown. The aim of this study is to describe facial cutaneous innervation using skin biopsy. This new tool could be useful in understanding the mechanisms underlying several facial pain conditions. In 30 healthy subjects, we quantified epidermal nerve fibers (ENFs) and dermal myelinated fibers (MFs) in V1, V2 and V3, using indirect immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy applied to 2-mm punch skin biopsies from areas adjacent to the eyebrow, upper and lower lip. Using selective markers, we

Minimal incisions vertical endoscopic lifting and fat grafting as a systematic approach to the rejuvenation of the periocular esthetic unit.

PURPOSE: The forehead/brow complex, the temporal region, the upper eyelid, the zygomatic area, the lower eyelid, and the cheek comprise the periocular esthetic unit. The combination of variable degrees of tissue descent and fat deflation of the component parts of the unit determine its appearance with age. The authors report the results of tissue repositioning through a minimal incisions vertical endoscopic lift and volume restoration used in combination to restore the natural youthful appearance of the periocular esthetic unit. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the charts of pati

Superficial malignant fibrous histiocytoma presenting as recurrent atypical fibroxanthoma.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) are neoplasms of probable fibrohistiocytic lineage. The precise relationship between AFX and MFH remains controversial. We present two cases in which a lesion was excised from the face of an elderly person and reported as AFX. Both cases recurred within 12 months and were reclassified as MFH. They were excised with slow Mohs' micrographic surgery, with adjuvant radiotherapy in one case. In the other, a further recurrence was treated with orbital exenteration and radiotherapy. We review the difficulties in differentiating bet
