Molecular Epidemiology and Risk Factors of Theileria annulata Infection and Rhipicephalus and Hyalomma Tick Infestation in Three Districts of Northern Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases pose a major threat to livestock productivity in tropical and subtropical regions, by transmitting pathogens of veterinary and public health concern, including Theileria species. Despite the threats posed to the large ruminant industry, integrated studies on the causative agent of tropical theileriosis and its tick vectors from the same infected hosts, along with their associated risk factors, remain limited in northern Pakistan. This study investigated Theileria infection, its associated tick species, and host- and environmental-related risk factors i

Stage-specific transcriptomic analysis reveals insights into the development, reproduction and biological function of allergens in the European house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus.

BACKGROUND: House dust mites (HDMs) such as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus are major allergy elicitors worldwide, yet their gene expression across developmental stages remains underexplored. Herein, we report a comprehensive RNAseq analysis of larvae, nymphs, and adult males and females, mapped to a recently published high-quality genome with extended functional annotations. RESULTS: Analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEG) revealed that female-biased expression was the most prevalent profile (16% of genes), while males exhibited the highest fold-change differences. DEG data, combined

Planococcus ficus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) movement and demography: methods for generating cohorts for laboratory studies.

Planococcus ficus (Signoret) is a worldwide pest of grapevine. Mealybugs overwinter under bark and move into the grape canopy as the season progresses. Because crawlers are more active than later stages, mealybug movement behavior is likely to be stage specific. To quantify P. ficus demography and movement behavior, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted. First, P. ficus populations were monitored on grapevine seedlings to describe survival, change in size, timing of male pupation, and timing of oviposition over a 6-wk period. Subsequently, cohorts of mealybugs were generated by inf

Interspecies co-feeding transmission of Powassan virus between a native tick, Ixodes scapularis, and the invasive East Asian tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis.

BACKGROUND: Powassan virus, a North American tick-borne flavivirus, can cause severe neuroinvasive disease in humans. While Ixodes scapularis are the primary vectors of Powassan virus lineage II (POWV II), also known as deer tick virus, recent laboratory vector competence studies showed that other genera of ticks can horizontally and vertically transmit POWV II. One such tick is the Haemaphysalis longicornis, an invasive species from East Asia that recently established populations in the eastern USA and already shares overlapping geographic range with native vector species such as I. scapulari

Transmission of Cytauxzoon felis by injection of Amblyomma americanum salivary glands.

BACKGROUND: Cytauxzoonosis is a life-threatening disease of cats, caused by the tick-borne piroplasmid hemoparasite, Cytauxzoon felis. Current experimental models for cytauxzoonosis rely on either tick transmission or direct injection of infected cat tissues. These models require researchers to directly work with infected ticks or use cats with acute cytauxzoonosis. To improve the feasibility and accessibility, there is a need to establish sharable resources among researchers. In related piroplasmid parasites, sporozoite-based inoculums are routinely produced from tick salivary glands, cryopre

The zoonotic reservoir of Borrelia burgdorferisensu lato in the Mazury Lakes district of North-Eastern Poland.

The roles of two species of rodents: the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) and the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) in maintaining the vector Ixodes ricinus and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. were studied. More particularly, seasonal patterns of rodent abundance and infestation rate with I. ricinus ticks as well as the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. and the two species B. garinii and B. afzelii were determined. The studies were carried out in woodlands at Urwitałt near Mikołajki on the Mazury Lakes in 2001. A total of 196 rodents were trapped and 1349 I. ricinus ticks were collected.

MOLECULAR CLONING, EXPRESSION PATTERN OF MULTIDRUG RESISTANCE ASSOCIATED PROTEIN 1 (MRP1, ABCC1) GENE, AND THE SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS OF VERAPAMIL ON TOXICITY OF TWO INSECTICIDES IN THE BIRD CHERRY-OAT APHID.

The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are important transmembrane proteins encoded by a supergene family. The majority of ABC proteins are primary active transporters that bind and hydrolyze ATP to mediate the efflux of a diverse range of substrates across lipid membranes. In this study, we cloned and characterized a putative multidrug resistance associated protein 1 (MRP1) from Rhopalosiphum padi encoded by ABCC1. Structural analysis showed that this protein has structural features typical of the ABC transporter family. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the amino acid sequence was hi

Epidemiological study on ticks and tick-borne pathogens in cape hare (Lepus capensis) in Algeria.

INTRODUCTION: The Cape hare (L. capensis) is one of the most common game species in Algeria, although its populations have declined in recent years. This wild lagomorph may host ticks, which act as vectors for a range of zoonotic pathogens. The purpose of this study is to fill the gaps in current knowledge regarding the presence of ticks in Algerian cape hare species and better understand the potential implications for public health. METHODS: During the 2023-2024 hunting seasons in the High Plateaus of Algeria, a total of 47 lagomorphs (44 Cape hares and 3 wild rabbits) were collected from 20

Molecular-based detection of Ehrlichia spp. in stray dogs-infesting Rhipicephalus ticks in high-altitude of northern Pakistan.

Although ticks are recognized as carriers of zoonotic pathogens, the risks of tick-borne infections associated with dogs have received limited attention. The close interaction between humans and dogs increases the zoonotic potential of pathogens, increasing the urgency of addressing this overlooked vector-borne health risk, especially in developing regions. This study sought to identify tick-borne zoonotic pathogens by collecting ticks from dogs and screening for Ehrlichia species, a group known to pose significant yet often neglected health risks to both humans and animals, particularly in th

A U.S. isolate of Theileria orientalis, Ikeda genotype, is transmitted to cattle by the invasive Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis.

BACKGROUND: Theileria orientalis is a tick-borne hemoparasite that causes anemia, ill thrift, and death in cattle globally. The Ikeda strain of T. orientalis is more virulent than other strains, leading to severe clinical signs and death of up to 5% of affected animals. Within the Asia-Pacific region, where it affects 25% of Australian cattle, T. orientalis Ikeda has a significant economic impact on the cattle industry. In 2017, T. orientalis Ikeda was detected in a cattle herd in Albermarle County, Virginia, United States. Months earlier, the U.S. was alerted to the invasion of the Asian long

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks of migratory birds in Romania.

BACKGROUND: Birds are important hosts and dispersers of parasitic arthropods and vector-borne zoonotic pathogens. Particularly migratory species may carry these parasites over long distances in short time periods. Migratory hotspots present ideal conditions to get a snapshot of parasite and pathogen diversity of birds migrating between continents. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and diversity of Rickettsia spp. in ticks collected from birds at a migratory hot-spot in the Danube Delta, Romania, eastern Europe. METHODS: DNA was extracted from ticks that were collected from

Lyme borreliosis spirochetes in questing ticks from mainland Portugal.

In Portugal, Ixodes ricinus ticks have been shown to contain DNA of several spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, with major differences in the genetic diversity between ecozones. Some isolates have been obtained since 1999, confirming the circulation of pathogenic strains in these ticks. Ixodes ricinus is considered to be a widespread species, however, in Portugal it is found only in a few habitats. Here we present preliminary results from a nationwide survey of questing I. ricinus (n = 4,001) and other Ixodidae (n = 1,534) in Portugal, initiated in 2001. The s

The emergence of Lyme disease in a changing environment in North America and central Europe.

Lyme disease has recently begun to emerge as a significant threat to human health, both in Europe and the United States. Late sequellae, resembling those of neurosyphilis and multiple sclerosis, may occur many years after initial infection. Spontaneous abortion accompanies arthritis, carditis and neuritis as burdensome short-term sequellae. Thousands of new infections are recognized each year on each side of the Atlantic, although reporting may be incomplete. The disease was described in Europe nearly a century ago and named erythema chronicum migrans, but its etiology has only recently been d

PCR reveals significantly higher rates of Trypanosoma cruzi infection than microscopy in the Chagas vector, Triatoma infestans: high rates found in Chuquisaca, Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: The Andean valleys of Bolivia are the only reported location of sylvatic Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Chagas disease in this country, and the high human prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in this region is hypothesized to result from the ability of vectors to persist in domestic, peri-domestic, and sylvatic environments. Determination of the rate of Trypanosoma infection in its triatomine vectors is an important element in programs directed at reducing human infections. Traditionally, T. cruzi has been detected in insect vectors by direct microscopic examination of

Hematological and plasma profiles and ticks and tick-borne pathogens in wild Formosan black bears (Ursus thibetanus formosanus).

BACKGROUND: The endangered Formosan black bear (Ursus thibetanus formosanus) is the largest native carnivorous mammal in Taiwan. Diseases, poor management, illegal hunting, and habitat destruction are serious threats to the survival of bear populations. However, studies on the impact of diseases on bear populations are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a database of the hematological and plasma profiles of free-ranging Formosan black bears and investigate the occurrence of ectoparasites, blood parasites, and vector-borne pathogens. METHODS: Formosan black bears were captured i

Integrative transcriptomics reveals association of abscisic acid and lignin pathways with cassava whitefly resistance.

BACKGROUND: Whiteflies are a global threat to crop yields, including the African subsistence crop cassava (Manihot esculenta). Outbreaks of superabundant whitefly populations throughout Eastern and Central Africa in recent years have dramatically increased the pressures of whitefly feeding and virus transmission on cassava. Whitefly-transmitted viral diseases threaten the food security of hundreds of millions of African farmers, highlighting the need for developing and deploying whitefly-resistant cassava. However, plant resistance to whiteflies remains largely poorly characterized at the gene

Circulation of Babesia Species and Their Exposure to Humans through Ixodes Ricinus.

Human babesiosis in Europe has been attributed to infection with Babesia divergens and, to a lesser extent, with Babesia venatorum and Babesia microti, which are all transmitted to humans through a bite of Ixodes ricinus. These Babesia species circulate in the Netherlands, but autochthonous human babesiosis cases have not been reported so far. To gain more insight into the natural sources of these Babesia species, their presence in reservoir hosts and in I. ricinus was examined. Moreover, part of the ticks were tested for co-infections with other tick borne pathogens. In a cross-sectional stud

Lake Michigan insights from island studies: the roles of chipmunks and coyotes in maintaining Ixodes scapularis and Borrelia burgdorferi in the absence of white-tailed deer.

Deer management (e.g., reduction) has been proposed as a tool to reduce the acarological risk of Lyme disease. There have been few opportunities to investigate Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged tick) and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto dynamics in the absence of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in midwestern North America. A pair of islands in Lake Michigan presented a unique opportunity to study the role of alternative hosts for the adult stage of the blacklegged tick for maintaining a tick population as a deer herd exists on North Manitou Island but not on South Manitou Island, whe

[A case with scalp pruritus caused by Dermanysus gallinae (order: mesostigmata)].

Dermanyssus gallinae is one of the important hematophagous ectoparasite species of poultry like chicken, pigeon and wild bird species. These ectoparasites in the form of nymphs or adults who can not find their hosts are also seen in mammals and even in humans. For this reason, they are considered as important for public health. The ectoparasite causes a clinical condition named gamasoidosis among pet owners and people who live or work close to animal shelters, barns and chicken farms. Pruritus dermatitis is also caused by D.gallinae in humans and can cause false diagnosis. In this report, a ca
