A study of the role of multiple site blood cultures in the evaluation of neonatal sepsis.

BACKGROUND: The optimal number of blood cultures needed to document sepsis in an ill neonate has undergone little critical evaluation. Multiple site cultures may improve pathogen detection if intermittent bacteremia occurs, or if a low density of bacteria is present in the blood. We hypothesized, however, that bacterial clearance is slower and bacteremia more continuous in septic neonates, so that a single site blood culture should be sufficient to accurately document true septicemia. OBJECTIVE: To determine the need for multiple site blood cultures in the evaluation of neonates for sepsis.

[Clinical studies of cefoperazone in neurosurgery].

A multicenter trial consisting of 164 institutions through out Japan, has been conducted to study the transfer of cefoperazone (CPZ) into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the clinical effectiveness of CPZ as a therapeutic or prophylactic agent in neurosurgery. The levels of CPZ in serum and CSF were determined in 96 patients. After initial dose of 2 g CPZ (intravenous drip infusion for 30 minutes), the serum level of CPZ after 1 hour was 124.5 +/- 6.6 micrograms/ml (Mean +/- S.E.), and even after 6 hours, it maintained as high as 47.8 +/- 16.6 micrograms/ml. The peak CPZ levels in CSF in pat

Bacteriological Profile of Patients With Stroke-Associated Pneumonia and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Pathogens: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is the aftermath of aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions or stomach content. Mechanical ventilation and lowered immunity and consciousness facilitate the etiopathogenesis of SAP. Antibiotic prophylaxis and repeated culture and sensitivity testing dampen the drug susceptibility patterns of the pathogens. We accomplished this study to determine the bacteriological profile of patients with SAP and the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the pathogenic bacteria. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was executed from August 2022 to

Infection control during parenteral nutrition therapy.

Parenteral nutrition therapy can achieve an anabolic state in patients who are unable to maintain normal nitrogen balance; however, it may be associated with infectious complications. Infections may be related to contamination of the cannula and the cannula wound, of the infusate, or of other parts of the parenteral nutrition system. A variety of microorganisms has been associated with these infections. The exact mechanisms that initiate cannula-related infection are poorly understood. Susceptibility of the host, the method and site of cannula insertion, colonization of parenteral nutrition ca

From Valve to Vessel: Disseminated Staphylococcus aureus Endocarditis Leading to Splenic Artery Pseudoaneurysm and Mycotic Aneurysm.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart, with Staphylococcus aureus as the leading cause in the United States. Identified risk factors include advanced age, male sex, intravenous drug use (IVDU), prior IE, structural or valvular heart disease, HIV infection, and chronic hemodialysis. In IVDU, IE most commonly affects the right-sided valves, while bivalvular involvement is uncommon but associated with more severe disease and increased risk of rapid deterioration. Multiple complications arise from IE, including variable vascular phenomena and systemic

Interactions of semiconductor Cd-based quantum dots and Cd2+ with gut bacteria isolated from wild Salmo trutta fry.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid development of nanotechnology, more and more nanoproducts are being released into the environment where they may both pose ecological risks and be toxic to living organisms. The ecotoxicological impact of quantum dots (QDs), a class of nanoparticles (NPs), on aquatic organisms is becoming an emerging issue, this due to their nano-specific properties, to the physico-chemical transformation in the environment and to the possible release of toxic metals from their structure such as Cd. METHODS: In this work, (i) spectroscopic measurements of commercially available Cd-b

Contact Lens Associated Bacterial Keratitis: Common Organisms, Antibiotic Therapy, and Global Resistance Trends: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Contact lens wearing has been increased globally during recent decades, which is one of the main risk factors for developing microbial keratitis. Microbial keratitis is a severe and dangerous condition that causes cornea inflammation. It can lead to corneal scarring and perforation or even endophthalmitis and visual loss if it remains untreated. Among bacterial, fungal, protozoal, and viral agents which can cause microbial keratitis, bacteria are the most common cause. Therefore, in this study, we aim to find common causative bacteria, sensitivity, and resistance to antibiotics a

Prevalence of Bacteria and Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Hospital Water and Surfaces.

Purpose Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a worldwide environmental and public health problem, causing more than 250,000 deaths per year. Unregulated usage, unsafe hospital practices, and misuse in veterinary contribute to the development of multidrug resistance in various bacteria. Hospital water was hypothesized to be a hotspot for AMR transmission because of (1) increased exposure to antibiotic load, (2) poor drainage and sanitation system, (3) interaction between environmental and clinical microbes. The purpose of the research was to assess the biodiversity and AMR in hospital tap

The hospital sink drain biofilm resistome is independent of the corresponding microbiota, the environment and disinfection measures.

In hospitals, the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) may occur via biofilms present in sink drains, which can lead to infections. Despite the potential role of sink drains in the transmission of ARB in nosocomial infections, routine surveillance of these drains is lacking in most hospitals. As a result, there is currently no comprehensive understanding of the transmission of ARB and the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and associated mobile genetic elements (MGEs) via sink drains. This study employed a multifaceted approach to monitor the total aerobic ba
