Three-dimensional finite element modeling for evaluation of laryngomalacia severity in infants and children.

This study was performed to investigate the feasibility of using a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model for laryngomalacia severity assessment. We analyzed laryngeal computed tomography images of seven children with laryngomalacia using Mimics software. The gray threshold of different tissues was distinguishable, and a 3D visualization model and finite element model were constructed. The laryngeal structure parameters were defined. The peak von Mises stress (PVMS) value was obtained through laryngeal mechanical analysis. The PVMS values of the laryngeal soft tissue and cartilage scaffol

[Spin-echo anatomy of the larynx in MRI at 1.5 T].

The larynges of 8 healthy and informed volunteers were studied with a superconductive MR unit at 1.5 T together with those of 10 patients with extra-laryngeal pathologic conditions. The study was performed with round surface coils (5'') and with delicated sellar coils in the anterior neck. Slices were 5 mm thick, and acquired on the coronal, axial, and sagittal planes, with T1-weighting; axial scans were repeated in the same locations with double echoes, with proton-density and T2-weighting. Five patients underwent additional scans after Gd-DTPA. The larynx of a semi-frozen cadaver was examine

Comparison of Diagnostic Performance Between CT and MRI for Detection of Cartilage Invasion and Tumor Staging in Patients with Laryngeal Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal cancer constitutes a major burden. Accurate staging is important to determine the optimal treatment approach. However, a head-to-head comparison of diagnostic performance between CT and MRI in patients with laryngeal cancer is lacking. Furthermore, the performance of CT and MRI in detecting the invasion of different laryngeal structures is yet to be determined. OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic performance of CT and MRI in patients with laryngeal cancer. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science in November 2025 for cohort studies that compared both ind

Point-of-care ultrasound of the upper airway in difficult airway management: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The utility of bedside screening tests for the prediction of difficult airways is limited. There is growing interest in the role of point-of-care-ultrasound in airway assessment and management. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the diagnostic utility and clinical application of various upper airway point-of-care-ultrasound parameters in the prediction of difficult airways. METHODS: We searched databases for randomised controlled trials, observational studies and case series with more than five cases. RESULTS: In total, 60 studies involving 10,580 patie

The Relationship between Upper Airway Anatomy and Obesity in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Rationale: Obesity is the most important risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, the complex relationship between obesity and upper airway anatomy (craniofacial structure, soft tissues, and airway caliber) has not been robustly examined in patients with OSA. Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between obesity, on the basis of body mass index (BMI), and upper airway anatomic structures in adult patients with moderate or severe OSA. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 583 patients with apnea-hypopnea index ≥15 events/h (mean age, 53.7 ± 10.4 yr; 81.0% men) were included

A quantitative study of airway ultrasound in predicting difficult laryngoscopy: A prospective study.

PURPOSE: As common clinical screening tests cannot effectively predict a difficult airway, and unanticipated difficult laryngoscopy remains a challenge for physicians. We herein used ultrasound to develop some point-of-care predictors for difficult laryngoscopy. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 502 patients who underwent laryngoscopy and a detailed sonographic assessment. Patients under 18 years old, or with maxillofacial deformities or fractures, limited mouth opening, limited neck movement or history of neck surgery were excluded from the study. Laryngoscopic views of

Automatic segmentation of vocal tract articulators in real-time magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The characterization of the vocal tract geometry during speech interests various research topics, including speech production modeling, motor control analysis, and speech therapy design. Real-time MRI is a reliable and non-invasive tool for this purpose. In most cases, it is necessary to know the contours of the individual articulators from the glottis to the lips. Several techniques have been proposed for segmenting vocal tract articulators, but most are limited to specific applications. Moreover, they often do not provide individualized contours for all soft-tissue

Accuracy of MDCT and CBCT in three-dimensional evaluation of the oropharynx morphology.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of five different computed tomography (CT) scanners for the evaluation of the oropharynx morphology. METHODS: An existing cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data set was used to fabricate an anthropomorphic phantom of the upper airway volume that extended from the uvula to the epiglottis (oropharynx) with known dimensions (gold standard). This phantom was scanned using two multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) scanners (GE Discovery CT750 HD, Siemens Somatom Sensation) and three CBCT scanners (NewTom 5G, 3D Accuitomo 170, Vatech PaX Zenith 3D). Upper Airway Changes After Mandibular Setback and/or Advancement Genioplasty in Obese Patients.

PURPOSE: Orthognathic surgeries, such as bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSO) and genioplasty, can influence the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) and this has been supported by previous studies. The purpose of this study was to assess changes of the PAS in patients with a high body mass index (BMI) likely to have narrow airways before and after setback BSSO with or without advancement genioplasty surgery by 3-dimensional computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five adults with a BMI of at least 24.0 kg/m2 were treated from 2010 to 2016. Samples were grouped mandibular setba

Successful treatment of persistent dorsal displacement of the soft palate and evaluation of laryngohyoid position in 15 racehorses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Caudal descent of the larynx has been proposed to be associated with intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) as it leads to a loss of the seal between the epiglottis and soft palate but further investigation of this theory is required. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate laryngohyoid position of horses with persistent DDSP in comparison to horses with intermittent DDSP and evaluate the outcome of treatment. HYPOTHESES: Horses with persistent DDSP have a different laryngohyoid position compared to those with intermittent DDSP. Horses with persistent DDSP c

The assessment of midface distraction osteogenesis in treatment of upper airway obstruction.

Le Fort III osteotomy with midface distraction osteogenesis (Le Fort III DO) can improve the midface form and change the upper airway space. Some surgeons believe that midface advancement can improve respiratory outcome dramatically, but others think it does not predictably result in the cure of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In this study, we evaluated the structural and functional changes of the upper airway before and after Le Fort III DO; we hope these studies can improve future protocols for midface advancement. A retrospective study of 11 patients with severe midface retrusion who underw

Case report: An uncommon presentation of extramedullary plasmacytoma without a concurrent diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

INTRODUCTION: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon solitary tumor originating from neoplastic plasma cells located outside the bone marrow. Despite its rarity, the occurrence of EMP without a concurrent diagnosis of multiple myeloma (MM) is considered extremely rare. Approximately 80-90% of EMP cases are found in the head and neck region, with a higher incidence in men aged between 50 and 60 years. The current treatment modalities include radiotherapy (RT) as a first-line approach, with surgery or chemotherapy regarded as other therapeutic options. While RT proves effective in the

Deep neck infections - case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Deep neck infections represent severe inflammatory involvement of defined fascial spaces of the neck and are potentially life-threatening diseases. The etiology is most commonly odontogenic or tonsillogenic. The main complications are mediastinitis, septic shock and upper airway obstruction. Treatment is based on the administration of intravenous antibiotics and, in indicated cases, surgical drainage of abscess sites. Case report 1: A 7-year-old girl was treated by a general practitioner for acute tonsil-litis. CT scan with contrast medium was indicated due to worsening of the co

Design of an Artificial Tongue Driven by Shape Memory Alloy Fibers.

Dysphasia is one of the complications which may cause functional disability after the surgical treatment of oral cancer. The loss of the function derived by tongue and other oral tissues impairs the retention and delivery of liquids and food masses as well as the swallowing motion into pharynx. As accumulation of liquids or food masses in the larynx can lead to pneumonia, therefore swallowing support to improve each coordination of the tongue, the epiglottis and the esophagus in the process of swallowing is highly desirable. In this study, we designed a new artificial tongue which was capable

Simulation of turbulent airflow using a CT based upper airway model of a racehorse.

Computational model for airflow through the upper airway of a horse was developed. Previous flow models for human airway do not hold true for horses due to significant differences in anatomy and the high Reynolds number of flow in the equine airway. Moreover, models that simulate the entire respiratory cycle and emphasize on pressures inside the airway in relation to various anatomical diseases are lacking. The geometry of the airway was created by reconstructing images obtained from computed tomography scans of a thoroughbred racehorse. Different geometries for inhalation and exhalation were
