The primary cicatricial alopecias are an uncommon, complex group of disorders that result in permanent destruction of the hair follicle, usually involving scalp hair alone. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are needed to help thwart continued hair loss and the distress that often accompanies this hair loss. Nurses can facilitate the diagnostic and treatment process and, through educational and emotionally supportive measures, have a meaningful, positive impact on the patient's well being.

From 1969 to 1990, 43 patients with tracheal stenosis were treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Seventy-four percent of these patients (n = 32) had intrinsic tracheal stenosis, most frequently as a complication of prolonged endotracheal trauma. A total of 41 distinctly separate stenotic segments were identified in the 32 patients. Limited indications for radiation treatment of benign dermatoses are presented in order to emphasize modern restrictions and techniques in the use of dermatologic radiation therapy and to promote measures of protection against stray radiation. The use of softer, less penetrating X rays, least effective doses and meticulous shielding are recommended. So done, radiation therapy offers an effective therapeutic alternative for conditions that do not respond to other forms of treatment.

PURPOSE: To present the clinical results of a study of unstable metacarpal fractures treated with absorbable plates.
METHODS: Between July 2004 and June 2006, 12 patients (14 fractures) who presented with displaced, unstable, metacarpal fractures had open reduction and internal fixation. The overall clinical follow-up results and radiographic controls at 6, 12, and 26 weeks after surgery are reported. The clinical outcome was assessed by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand score and the visual analogue pain scale.

The clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of one orbital and nine extraorbital soft tissue lesions, the morphology of which overlaps with giant cell angiofibroma and solitary fibrous tumor, are presented. Pediatric plastic surgery has seen widespread advances during the past decade. These have been primarily in the biologic understanding of certain disease processes as well as in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. These advances have contributed to a potential new array of treatment options for congenital deformities and traumatic injuries. BACKGROUND: "Pincushioning" is a complication of post-surgical scarring following use of transposition flaps particularly when surgery is performed on the nasal region. The transposition flap technique is very useful for the repair of certain defects of the tip of the nose, the medial canthus or of the ala nasi. The aim of this study is to define the clinical characteristics of this scarring dystrophy, which we propose to call "early hypertrophy scarring", to clarify the nature thereof and to assess the efficacy of intralesional injection of corticosteroids at the first signs of hypertrophy.
