Rosacea: I. Etiology, pathogenesis, and subtype classification.

Rosacea is one of the most common conditions dermatologists treat. Rosacea is most often characterized by transient or persistent central facial erythema, visible blood vessels, and often papules and pustules. Based on patterns of physical findings, rosacea can be classified into 4 broad subtypes: erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular. The cause of rosacea remains somewhat of a mystery. Several hypotheses have been documented in the literature and include potential roles for vascular abnormalities, dermal matrix degeneration, environmental factors, and microorganisms

Conductive hearing loss in bighorn sheep.

In January 1993 we simulated a conductive hearing loss in three Mexican bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) by placing bone wax or saline solution in their ear canals. Our objective was to test whether lesions of the external auditory canal caused by psoroptic mites (Psoroptes ovis) may lead to conductive hearing loss in bighorn sheep. We assessed the effects of these manipulations using the auditory brainstem response test. Placing saline solution in the external auditory canal, which loads the tympanic membrane, had a more dramatic effect on the auditory brainstem response than did bone

Association of diabetes, lash loss, and Staphylococcus aureus with infestation of eyelids by Demodex folliculorum (Acari: Demodicidae).

Six eyelashes, three from the upper lid and three from the lower lid, were epilated from 256 subjects and examined for Demodex. D. folliculorum (Simon) was found in 16% of the subjects. Mites were more abundant in older persons and in persons with diabetes. Mites also were associated with a scarcity of lashes in the lower lid. Hierarchical log-linear analysis showed that the associations of greater mite abundance with diabetes and with madarosis were independent of age. The 43 persons from whose lid margins Staphylococcus aureus was cultured seemed to have been more likely to have two or more

Demodex folliculorum on the eyelash follicle of diabetic patients.

PURPOSE: To compare the prevalence of Demodex folliculorum on the eyelashes of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and healthy voluntaries. METHODS: Type 2 diabetic patients with proliferative retinopathy and age- and gender-matched healthy voluntaries (group control) underwent a slit lamp examination which three eyelashes containing cylindrical dandruff were removed from each lid by fine forceps. The lashes were dyed with fluorescein and the presence of Demodex folliculorum was verified by direct visualization under a light microscope. The mites were recognized based on its morp

Clinical demodicosis in African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) in the Kruger National Park.

We investigated the relationship between prevalence and severity of clinical signs of Demodex cafferi infection in free-ranging African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and other factors such as age, sex, pregnancy status, and concomitant infections with bovine tuberculosis (BTB), Rift Valley fever (RVF), and brucellosis (BA). Approximately half of 203 buffalo examined in this study had clinical signs of demodicosis (cutaneous nodules); younger age classes had the highest prevalence and severity of lesions (chi(2)=21.4, df=6, P=0.0015). Nodules were generally limited to the head and neck region, but

Gray areas: an investigation of ectoparasite abundance and distribution and tick-borne pathogens in peridomestic eastern gray squirrels Rodentia: Sciuridae (Sciurus carolinensis).

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin) is a widely distributed rodent in North America, including introduced populations in western regions. Despite being widespread in urban and suburban ecosystems, their role as reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens has been understudied compared to other wildlife hosts. This study investigates the prevalence of ectoparasites and tick-borne pathogens in eastern gray squirrels across suburban habitats in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. Over 2 yr, squirrels were trapped across 5 sites and examined for ectoparasites. Ticks were the mo

Bee foraging preferences, microbiota and pathogens revealed by direct shotgun metagenomics of honey.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) continue to succumb to human and environmental pressures despite their crucial role in providing essential ecosystem services. Owing to their foraging and honey production activities, honeybees form complex relationships with species across all domains, such as plants, viruses, bacteria and other hive pests, making honey a valuable biomonitoring tool for assessing their ecological niche. Thus, the application of honey shotgun metagenomics (SM) has paved the way for a detailed description of the species honeybees interact with. Nevertheless, SM bioinformatics tools an

Alpha-amylase as the culprit in an occupational mealworm allergy case.

BACKGROUND: Occupational allergy has been described in employees working in contact with mealworms in pet stores, live fish bait or infested stored grains and recently, in mealworm farming for animal feed and human consumption. Mealworm allergens linked to occupational allergy are troponin C, cockroach-like allergen, tropomyosin, arginine kinase, early-staged encapsulation inducing- and larval cuticle proteins. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of occupational mealworm allergy and studied the culprit component. METHODS: Diagnosis was done by skin prick, specific IgE, basophil activation and lung f

Comparative analysis of the allergenic characteristics and serodiagnostic potential of recombinant chitinase-like protein-5 and -12 from Sarcoptes scabiei.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is caused by burrowing of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei into the stratum corneum. Currently, diagnosis via routine skin scraping is very difficult, and information on the allergenic identification of S. scabiei remains limited. METHODS: We performed comparative analysis of the serological diagnostic potential of recombinant S. scabiei chitinase-like protein-5 (rSsCLP5) and recombinant S. scabiei chitinase-like protein-12 (rSsCLP12) by measuring the levels of serum-specific IgG and IgE antibodies (Abs) as diagnostic markers. In addition, the allergenic characteristics of rSsCL

Comparative diagnostics reveals PCR assays on skin scrapings is the most reliable method to detect Sarcoptes scabiei infestations.

Sarcoptic mange is a globally significant parasitic disease of humans and other animals, both domestic and wild. But clinical diagnosis of S. scabiei infestation, using the standard skin scraping followed by microscopy technique, remains highly variable (predominantly due to false-negatives), and a major challenge for human and animal welfare. Here, we utilised a unique sample set from bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus) to evaluate a variety of putatively useful diagnostic approaches for S. scabiei. Against the standard of skin scrapings followed by microscopy, we compared observational sco

Flea fitness is reduced by high fractional concentrations of CO₂ that simulate levels found in their hosts' burrows.

Nidicolous ectoparasites such as fleas and gamasid mites that feed on small and medium-sized mammals spend much of their time in their hosts' burrows, which provide an environment for living, and often feeding, to their pre-imaginal and/or adult stages. Thus, these ectoparasites should be adapted to environmental conditions in burrows, including high fractional concentrations of CO2 (F(CO2)). We examined how a high F(CO2) (0.04) affected survival and reproductive success of a hematophagous ectoparasite of burrowing rodents using fleas Xenopsylla ramesis and Sundevall's jirds Meriones crassus.

A review of the parasiticidal efficacy of a selamectin plus sarolaner combination for use on cats.

The topical combination of selamectin and sarolaner (Stronghold® Plus in the European Union and Revolution® Plus in global regions) is a low-volume, spot-on parasiticide for monthly administration on cats providing a minimum dose of 6.0 mg/kg selamectin and 1.0 mg/kg sarolaner. The combination of two active ingredients with efficacy against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) but with different modes of action works in synchrony to provide both high efficacy and fast speed of kill against fleas, resulting in an inhibited flea egg production, reduced flea allergic dermatitis and risk of infection with

Traditional healers' perception on scabies causation and management in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is an underdiagnosed skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The infection causes severe itching and a skin rash but can be effectively treated using topical or systemic drugs. Scabies outbreaks are commonly reported in resource-poor countries, including Ghana. Traditional healers play an important role in primary care in rural areas. The role of these traditional healers in the management of scabies has so far not been explored. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the perceptions of traditional healers regarding the causation and management

Evolutionarily diverse origins of deformed wing viruses in western honey bees.

Novel transmission routes can allow infectious diseases to spread, often with devastating consequences. Ectoparasitic varroa mites vector a diversity of RNA viruses, having switched hosts from the eastern to western honey bees (Apis cerana to Apis mellifera). They provide an opportunity to explore how novel transmission routes shape disease epidemiology. As the principal driver of the spread of deformed wing viruses (mainly DWV-A and DWV-B), varroa infestation has also driven global honey bee health declines. The more virulent DWV-B strain has been replacing the original DWV-A strain in many r

Mass drug administration for endemic scabies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is an extremely fastidious infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It causes a persistent itch that can disrupt a person's mental health, sleep, and overall quality of life. In endemic areas, treatment by targeting symptomatic individuals and their contacts is often unsuccessful due to an asymptomatic period and high rates of re-infection. To overcome this, Mass Drug Administration (MDA) is often used to treat the whole community, irrespective of whether individuals presently have scabies. This review summarises the evidence for the effectiveness of MDA in treatin

Phylogenetic analysis of Demodex caprae based on mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequence.

Demodex caprae infests the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of goats worldwide, which not only seriously impairs goat farming, but also causes a big economic loss. However, there are few reports on the DNA level of D. caprae. To reveal the taxonomic position of D. caprae within the genus Demodex, the present study conducted phylogenetic analysis of D. caprae based on mt16S rDNA sequence data. D. caprae adults and eggs were obtained from a skin nodule of the goat suffering demodicidosis. The mt16S rDNA sequences of individual mite were amplified using specific primers, and then cloned, seque

Sequential hypothesis testing with spatially correlated presence-absence data.

A pest management decision to initiate a control treatment depends upon an accurate estimate of mean pest density. Presence-absence sampling plans significantly reduce sampling efforts to make treatment decisions by using the proportion of infested leaves to estimate mean pest density in lieu of counting individual pests. The use of sequential hypothesis testing procedures can significantly reduce the number of samples required to make a treatment decision. Here we construct a mean-proportion relationship for Oligonychus perseae Tuttle, Baker, and Abatiello, a mite pest of avocados, from empir

Development of a 44K SNP assay focussing on the analysis of a varroa-specific defence behaviour in honey bees (Apis mellifera carnica).

Honey bees are exposed to a number of damaging pathogens and parasites. The most destructive among them, affecting mainly the brood, is Varroa destructor. A promising approach to prevent its spread is to breed for Varroa-tolerant honey bees. A trait that has been shown to provide significant resistance against the Varroa mite is hygienic behaviour, a behavioural response of honey bee workers to brood diseases in general. This study reports the development of a 44K SNP assay, specifically designed for the analysis of hygienic behaviour of individual worker bees (Apis mellifera carnica) directed
