Epidemiological, clinical and radiological characteristics of people with neurocysticercosis in Tanzania-A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is common among people with epilepsy in low-resource settings. Prevalence of NCC and radiological characteristics of patients with NCC vary considerably even within small areas but differences have been poorly characterized so far. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between August 2018 and April 2020 in three district hospitals in southern Tanzania (Ifisi, Tukuyu and Vwawa). Patients with and without epileptic seizures were included in this study. All patients were tested with a novel antibody-detecting point-of-care test for the diagnosis of Ta

The Local Inflammatory Profile and Predictors of Treatment Success in Subarachnoid Neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (SANCC) represents the most severe and difficult to treat form of neurocysticercosis. The inflammatory response contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality of the disease. This study sought to understand the nature and evolution of the inflammation associated with SANCC, and evaluate for predictors of time to cure. METHODS: There were 16 subjects with SANCC (basilar cistern, sylvian fissure, and/or spinal involvement) during active infection who had cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytokine and chemokine profiling, of whom 9 had a second CSF s

Seroprevalence of fascioliasis, toxocariasis, strongyloidiasis and cysticercosis in blood samples diagnosed in Medic Medical Center Laboratory, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 2012.

BACKGROUND: Despite the global effort against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), developing countries with middle to low income are still burdened by them. Vietnam has been undergoing substantial economic growth and urbanization, but underprivileged people living in rural and suburban areas are still having little access to public health infrastructure and proper sanitation. Hitherto, limited information is available for seroprevalence and risk factors of several parasitic diseases in Vietnam. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on diagnostic results of Fasciola spp., Toxocara spp.,

Pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma mimicking neurocysticercosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis occurs when the eggs of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) migrate and hatch into larvae within the central nervous system. Neurocysticercosis is the most common cause of seizures in the developing world and is characterized on brain imaging by cysts in different stages of evolution. In Canada, cases of neurocysticercosis are rare and most of these patients acquire the disease outside of Canada. We report the case of a patient with multiple intracranial lesions whose history and diagnostic imaging were consistent with neurocysticercosis. Pathological investigation

Neurocysticercosis in Europe: Still a public health concern not only for imported cases.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a parasitic disease caused by the larvae of the cestode Taenia solium, is the most frequent parasitic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) in the world and the leading cause of secondary epilepsy in Central and South America, East and South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. It is endemic in many low- and middle-income countries of the world. Due to increased travels and immigration, NCC may be diagnosed also in non-endemic areas. In fact, tapeworm carriers from endemic zones can transmit infection to other citizens or arrive already suffering NCC. This phenomenon,

Orbital apex syndrome secondary to optic nerve cysticercosis.

A 22-year-old male presented to us with complaints of sudden painful loss of vision in left eye 10 days ago along with inward deviation of the left eye. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in right eye was 20/20 and 20/50 in left eye. Left eye showed limitation of abduction, a relative afferent pupillary defect, normal anterior segment with optic disc oedema. Contrast-enhanced MRI of the brain and orbit showed thickening of left optic nerve along with a cystic lesion near the orbital apex with a central iso- to hyperintense spot resembling a scolex. A diagnosis of left orbital apex syndrome se

Follow-up of neurocysticercosis patients after treatment using an antigen detection ELISA.

Seven patients with active neurocysticercosis (NCC) received an eight days treatment with albendazole and were followed up using computed tomography (CT-scan) and a monoclonal antibody based ELISA for the detection of circulating antigen (Ag-ELISA). Only three patients were cured as was shown by CT-scan and by the disappearance of circulating antigens one month after treatment. After a second course of albendazole therapy, two other patients became seronegative. CT-scan showed the disappearance of viable cysts in all persons who became seronegative whereas patients who were not cured remained

Prevalence of Epilepsy across 25 Sub-Counties in Three Districts of Northern Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions worldwide, with large variation in prevalence across sub-Saharan African countries. Northern Uganda is one of the poorest areas of the country and has seen a high density of pigs and a prevalence of Taenia solium, a zoonotic tapeworm transmitted which causes neurocysticercosis in humans. The objective of this study was to estimate the population-level prevalence of active epilepsy in 25 sub-counties of northern Uganda. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010-2011 in 25 sub-counties of Moyo, Adjumani, an

Neurosurgical Approach to Neurocysticercosis in Adults: A Comprehensive Systematic Review of Clinical and Imaging Insights.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurocysticercosis (NCC), caused by larval cysts of Taenia solium , presents a significant health challenge worldwide with diverse clinical presentations and varying management approaches. Untreated NCC can lead to increased intracranial pressure and/or hydrocephalus, with possible death. This review provides comprehensive neurosurgical insight into the heterogeneity of NCC. As there is currently no treatment algorithm for NCC, we propose a framework based on the management strategies most prevalent in the literature. METHODS: A systematic review following the Prefe

Effectiveness of an integrated intervention in the control of endo- and ectoparasites of pigs kept by smallholder farmers in Mbeya rural and Mbozi districts, Tanzania.

This study was conducted to evaluate effectiveness of an integrated management intervention in the control of endo- and ectoparasites of pigs kept by smallholder farmers in Mbeya Rural and Mbozi districts of southern highlands of Tanzania. A repeated cross-sectional group randomization design was employed, with 10 villages in the intervention group and six villages in the control group. The intervention consisted of improving pig confinement, feeds and feeding practices, and strategic anthelmintic treatment of pigs with oxfendazole, to primarily control Taenia solium (porcine) cysticercosis an

A Classic Case of Subcutaneous Cysticercosis: A Rare Case with Sonological Findings and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stages of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. The subcutaneous form of the disease is a relatively rare clinical entity. Despite its rarity, it is imperative for a radiologist to be aware of this subcutaneous form of the disease and its various radiological patterns while evaluating any subcutaneous swelling. In this paper, we aimed to describe a typical case of 'subcutaneous cysticercosis involving the left anterior chest wall' with high resolution ultrasound findings. We also discussed the role of other imaging modalities

The effect of albendazole treatment on non-seizure outcomes in patients with symptomatic neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: There is little information about the impact of anthelminthic treatment on clinical symptoms other than seizures in neurocysticercosis (NC). We investigated the effect of albendazole on non-seizure symptoms experienced by patients with NC. METHODS: Data are from a randomized controlled trial comparing albendazole plus prednisone with placebo plus prednisone for treatment of NC among 173 patients with active or transitional NC cysts and new-onset symptoms. We performed negative binomial regression to examine the number of follow-up visits when a symptom was reported, logistic regre

Estimation of the health and economic burden of neurocysticercosis in India.

Taenia solium is an endemic parasite in India which occurs in two forms in humans: cysticercosis (infection of soft tissues) and taeniosis (intestinal infection). Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most severe form of cysticercosis in which cysts develop in the central nervous system. This study was conducted to estimate health and economic impact due to human NCC-associated active epilepsy in India. Input data were sourced from published research literature, census data and other official records. Economic losses due to NCC-associated active epilepsy were estimated based on cost of treatment, ho

Prevalence of active convulsive epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa and associated risk factors: cross-sectional and case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa seems to be higher than in other parts of the world, but estimates vary substantially for unknown reasons. We assessed the prevalence and risk factors of active convulsive epilepsy across five centres in this region. METHODS: We did large population-based cross-sectional and case-control studies in five Health and Demographic Surveillance System centres: Kilifi, Kenya (Dec 3, 2007-July 31, 2008); Agincourt, South Africa (Aug 4, 2008-Feb 27, 2009); Iganga-Mayuge, Uganda (Feb 2, 2009-Oct 30, 2009); Ifakara, Tanzania (May 4, 2009-Dec 3
