Withdrawal as pregnancy prevention and associated risk factors among US high school students: findings from the 2011 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

PURPOSE: Withdrawal is less effective for preventing pregnancy than other contraceptive methods and offers no protection against sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Little is known from a national perspective about adolescents who primarily use withdrawal. This study describes the prevalence of withdrawal as their primary method of pregnancy prevention at last sexual intercourse among sexually active US high school students and associations with sexual risk and substance use. METHODS: Data from the 2011 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used to estimate sexually active stude

The validity of phosphatidylethanol in dried blood spots of newborns for the identification of prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in the newborn period offers an opportunity for early identification of children at risk of future neurocognitive problems and the implementation of interventional approaches earlier in life. PAE newborn screening by measuring phosphatidylethanol in dried blood spot (PEth-DBS) cards is feasible, logistically easier, and more cost-efficient compared with other biomarkers. However, the sensitivity and specificity of this method have yet to be established. METHODS: This prospective cohort study examined validity of PEth-DBS a

Chronic-plus-binge alcohol intake induces production of proinflammatory mtDNA-enriched extracellular vesicles and steatohepatitis via ASK1/p38MAPKα-dependent mechanisms.

Alcohol-associated liver disease is a spectrum of liver disorders with histopathological changes ranging from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recent data suggest that chronic-plus-binge ethanol intake induces steatohepatitis by promoting release by hepatocytes of proinflammatory mitochondrial DNA-enriched (mtDNA-enriched) extracellular vesicles (EVs). The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the stress kinase apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38) in chronic-plus-binge ethanol-i

Aflatoxin B1 exposure and liver cirrhosis in Guatemala: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: In Guatemala, cirrhosis is among the 10 leading causes of death, and mortality rates have increased lately. The reasons for this heavy burden of disease are not clear as the prevalence of prominent risk factors, such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and heavy alcohol consumption, appears to be low. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) exposure, however, appears to be high, and thus could be associated with the high burden of cirrhosis. Whether AFB1 increases the risk of cirrhosis in the absence of viral infection, however, is not clear. DESIGN: Cirrhosis cases (n=100) from two major referral

Therapeutic motor training increases parallel fiber synapse number per Purkinje neuron in cerebellar cortex of rats given postnatal binge alcohol exposure: preliminary report.

Because therapeutic approaches to fetal alcohol effects in humans have been rare, this study explored the rehabilitative effect of complex motor training on an animal model of binge drinking in the third trimester of human pregnancy. Neonatal alcohol exposure induces significant and permanent reductions in Purkinje and granule cell number accompanied by impaired motor behavior in rats. The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) whether the motor skill impairment caused by exposure to alcohol in the early postnatal period could be ameliorated by the learning of a set of complex motor tasks

Peritonitis secondary to traumatic duodenal laceration in the presence of a large pancreatic pseudocyst: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A pancreatic pseudocyst is a common sequela of severe acute pancreatitis. Commonly, it presents with abdominal pain and a mass in the epigastrium several weeks after the acute episode and can be managed conservatively, endoscopically or surgically. We report a patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst awaiting endoscopic therapy who developed a life-threatening complication following a rather innocuous trauma to the abdomen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old Asian male student presented as an emergency with an acute abdomen a week after a minor trauma to his upper abdomen. The injury

Neonatal binge alcohol exposure increases microglial activation in the developing rat hippocampus.

Aberrant activation of the developing immune system can have long-term negative consequences on cognition and behavior. Teratogens, such as alcohol, activate microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, which could contribute to the lifelong deficits in learning and memory observed in humans with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and in rodent models of FASD. The current study investigates the microglial response of the brain 24 h following neonatal alcohol exposure (postnatal days (PDs) 4-9, 5.25 g/kg/day). On PD10, microglial cell counts and area of cell territory were assessed using

NLRP6 Inflammasome Modulates Disease Progression in a Chronic-Plus-Binge Mouse Model of Alcoholic Liver Disease.

A considerable percentage of the population is affected by alcoholic liver disease (ALD). It is characterized by inflammatory signals from the liver and other organs, such as the intestine. The NLR family pyrin domain containing 6 (NLRP6) inflammasome complex is one of the most important inflammatory mediators. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel mouse model for ALD characterized by 8-week chronic-plus-binge ethanol administration and to investigate the role of NLRP6 inflammasome for intestinal homeostasis and ALD progression using Nlrp6-/- mice. We showed that chronic-plus-binge eth

Effects of neonatal alcohol dose and exposure window on long delay and trace eyeblink conditioning in juvenile rats.

Classical eyeblink conditioning has been used to assess learning and memory impairments in both humans and animal model studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Gestational exposure to alcohol in humans and its equivalent in rats severely impairs various eyeblink conditioning tasks, but less is known about how these effects are influenced by variables, such as the timing and dose of alcohol exposure. In a series of four experiments, we systematically examine how varying the timing and dose of alcohol exposure impact long delay and trace eyeblink conditioning in juvenile rats, tasks

Cannabis use among Canadian veterans: associations with the use of other substances, chronic pain conditions, mental disorders, suicide behaviours, and help-seeking.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of Veterans experience mental and physical health difficulties, including post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain, for which cannabis is sometimes medically authorized. However, relatively little is known about cannabis use among Canadian Veterans. Information on the prevalence of use, as well as the mental health profiles and help-seeking behaviours of Veterans who use cannabis, is important for developing more targeted prevention and intervention services and supports. METHODS: The current study used data from Veteran respondents (n = 1992) of the

Sexual uses of alcohol and drugs and the associated health risks: a cross sectional study of young people in nine European cities.

BACKGROUND: Young people in European countries are experiencing high levels of alcohol and drug use and escalating levels of sexually transmitted infections. Individually these represent major public health priorities. Understanding of the association between sex and substance use, and specifically the strategic roles for which young people utilise substances to facilitate sexual activity, remains limited. METHODS: Respondent driven sampling methodology was used in nine European cities to survey 1,341 16-35 year olds representing youth and younger adults who routinely engage in nightlife. Par

Evaluation and Management of Alcohol-Intoxicated Patients With Suicide Risk in the Emergency Department: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The severity of suicide risk in patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with co-occurring complaints of suicidal ideation and alcohol intoxication is neither well-understood nor well-recognized by ED staff. While suicide screening has become a standard expectation in ED care, there lacks consensus on standard care practices for the evaluation and management of patients with suicidal ideation and/or attempt and alcohol intoxication. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a scoping review of the care of ED patients with suicidality and alcohol intoxication. METHODS: This is a scoping

Nucleus accumbens core chemogenetic excitation in male mice and chemogenetic inhibition in female mice reduced ethanol reward.

BACKGROUND: Women tend to progress from initial alcohol use to dependence more rapidly than men, a phenomenon known as the "telescoping effect". This suggests different consequences of early alcohol use, which can impact the development of an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Previous evidence demonstrated that nucleus accumbens core (NAcC) chemogenetic manipulations resulted in opposite effects on binge-like drinking [stimulation decreased ethanol intake in C57BL/6J (B6) females, while inhibition decreased intake in males]. In humans, ethanol cue conditioning is linked to the positive subjective ef
