Visual function in recovered ethambutol optic neuropathy.

The visual acuity of the patient with ethambutol optic neuropathy will recover within 3 to 4 months after discontinuing the drug. We studied the extent of the recovery of other visual functions. Thirty-six axial type ethambutol optic neuropathy patients, who visited our neuro-ophthalmology clinic from January, 1990, to December, 1993, were included in this study. Fifteen patients (29 eyes) regained their visual acuity to better than 1.0. The average follow-up period following the recovery is 21.7 months. Pattern reversal VEP, Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue color vision test, critical flicker frequ

Colour or shape: examination of neural processes underlying mental flexibility in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that stems from exposure to one or more traumatic events. While PTSD is thought to result from a dysregulation of emotional neurocircuitry, neurocognitive difficulties are frequently reported. Mental flexibility is a core executive function that involves the ability to shift and adapt to new information. It is essential for appropriate social-cognitive behaviours. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a neuroimaging modality with high spatial and temporal resolution, has been used to track the progression of brain activation during tasks of men

Effects of quetiapine on cognitive functioning in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In recent years, growing evidence supports the efficacy of antipsychotic addition to serotonin reuptake inhibitors in patients with treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder. This study is the first to investigate the effects of antipsychotic addition on cognitive functioning in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Cognitive functioning was evaluated at baseline and at endpoint of an 8-week double-blind, placebo-controlled quetiapine addition trial. Neurocognitive performance was compared between the placebo and quetiapine group and between responders and nonresponders. The neurops

The superior colliculus subserves interhemispheric neural summation in both normals and patients with a total section or agenesis of the corpus callosum.

To verify the possibility that the superior colliculus (SC) subserves interhemispheric neural summation, we presented single or double white visual targets to one or both hemifields in normal participants and in patients lacking the corpus callosum (one with total callosotomy and one with callosal agenesis). Simple reaction time was typically faster with double than single stimuli, a phenomenon known as the redundant target effect (RTE); moreover, confirming previous results, we found a larger RTE in patients without callosum than in normals. In both groups, the redundancy gain was related to

Impaired picture recognition with preserved object naming and reading.

A case study is reported on a left posterior cerebrovascular accident involving the infracalcarine cortex. The patient (HG) exhibited a marked color anomia and picture naming deficit (photograph anomia) without alexia. However, objects were named successfully from either visual or tactile inspection. Despite successful object categorization in several tasks, it is argued that HG's picture naming deficit is dependent on a disorder of recognition (access to the stored structural descriptions for objects). A similar functional impairment can account for HG's impaired color naming. The site of HG'

How do we empathize with someone who is not like us? A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Previous research on the neural underpinnings of empathy has been limited to affective situations experienced in a similar way by an observer and a target individual. In daily life we also interact with people whose responses to affective stimuli can be very different from our own. How do we understand the affective states of these individuals? We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess how participants empathize with the feelings of patients who reacted with no pain to surgical procedures but with pain to a soft touch. Empathy for pain of these patients activated the same areas (

Temporal visual field defects are associated with monocular inattention in chiasmal pathology.

PURPOSE: Chiasmal lesions have been shown to give rise occasionally to uni-ocular temporal inattention, which cannot be compensated for by volitional eye movement. This article describes the assessments of 46 such patients with chiasmal pathology. It aims to determine the clinical spectrum of this disorder, including interference with reading. METHODS: Retrospective consecutive observational clinical case study over a 7-year period comprising 46 patients with chiasmal field loss of varying degrees. Observation of reading behaviour during monocular visual acuity testing ascertained from consec

Inhibitory control in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Impairments in executive abilities such as cognitive flexibility have been identified in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It remains unclear, however, whether such individuals also experience impairments in another executive ability: inhibitory control. In the present study, we administered three inhibitory tasks to 18 children with ASD, 23 siblings of children with ASD, and 25 typically developing children. After controlling for individual differences in age, overall IQ, and processing speed, children with ASD demonstrated impaired performance on two of the three inhibitory ta

Visual electrophysiological screening in diagnosing infants with congenital nystagmus.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the value of visual electrophysiological screening in evaluating retinal and postretinal visual pathway function in infants with congenital nystagmus. METHODS: In 28 infants with congenital nystagmus electroretinogram (ERG) was recorded with skin electrodes and, since the infants were alert, visual evoked potentials (VEP) were simultaneously recorded. The first recording was performed before the age of 1 year (age 2-11 months, mean age 6.8 months). Follow-up was performed between the ages of 7 months and 6 years (mean age 2.7 years). ERG was detected to flash stimulus

Anxiety and error-related brain activity.

Error-related negativity (ERN/Ne) is a component of the event-related brain potential (ERP) associated with monitoring action and detecting errors. It is a sharp negative deflection that generally occurs from 50 to 150 ms following response execution and has been associated with anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) activity. An enhanced ERN has been observed in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--reflecting abnormal ACC activity hypothesized as part of the pathophysiology of OCD. We recently reported that the ERN is also enhanced in a group of college students with OC characteristics

Evidence for a magnocellular disadvantage in early-onset schizophrenic patients: a source analysis of the N80 visual-evoked component.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairments in schizophrenia have been suggested to be partly caused by early processing deficits of the magnocellular (M) pathway. This might include disturbed interactions between the M and parvocellular (P) pathways and especially impaired M priming, which can disturb highlighting of relevant information. Such disorders may result from neurodevelopmental irregularities, which are assumed to be substantially involved in schizophrenia. This study sought to test the hypothesis that M priming is impaired in schizophrenia. In order to elucidate this neurodevelopmental aspect,

Comparison of methods for characterizing skin pigment diversity in research cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Some pulse oximeters perform worse in people with darker skin, and this may be due to inadequate diversity of skin pigment in device development study cohorts. Guidance is needed to accurately and equitably characterize skin pigment to ensure diversity in research cohorts. We tested multiple methods for characterizing skin pigment to assess comparability and impact on cohort diversity. OBJECTIVES: Assess reliability and comparability of common skin pigment measurement methodsCompare findings from different anatomical sitesDemonstrate that pigment cannot be assumed from US National

"Being able to do whatever you wanna do as a woman is important:" a qualitative exploration of contraception as a frame of reference for HIV prevention with PrEP.

BACKGROUND: Use of HIV PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a strategic tool in the effort to end the HIV epidemic. 20% of new HIV infections in the US are among cis-gender women, yet they comprise only 5% of all PrEP users. Black women disproportionately bear the burden of new HIV acquisition and accounted for almost 60% of new HIV diagnoses among women in 2018. Increasing understanding and uptake of PrEP among women at risk of HIV acquisition in alignment with their reproductive values and preferences is key to increasing PrEP uptake and decreasing HIV burden in this population. OBJECTIVE: Th

Blue-blocking glasses as additive treatment for mania: a randomized placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: The discovery of the blue lightsensitive retinal photoreceptor responsible for signaling daytime to the brain suggested that light to the circadian system could be inhibited by using blue-blocking orange tinted glasses. Blue-blocking (BB) glasses are a potential treatment option for bipolar mania. We examined the effectiveness of BB glasses in hospitalized patients with bipolar disorder in a manic state. METHODS: In a single-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial (RCT), eligible patients (with bipolar mania; age 18-70 years) were recruited from five clinics in Norway. Patie
