New insights into disease pathogenesis in crusted (Norwegian) scabies: the skin immune response in crusted scabies.

BACKGROUND: Crusted scabies is a rare and severely debilitating disease characterized by infestation of the skin with up to millions of Sarcoptes scabiei mites, high total IgG levels, extremely high total IgE levels, and the development of hyperkeratotic skin crusts that may be loose, scaly and flaky or thick and adherent. OBJECTIVES: To describe crusted scabies skin pathogenesis and identify markers associated with an inappropriate immune response leading to disease progression. PATIENTS/METHODS: Serial sections from skin biopsies obtained from two patients with severe crusted scabies were

Influence of Demodex Infection in the Occurrence and Prognosis of Keratitis in Patients With Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Related Dry Eye.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)-related dry eye results in reduced tears, unstable tear film, ocular surface damage, and even causes keratitis. Demodex infection causes inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface. This study aimed to explore the impact of Demodex infection on the occurrence and prognosis of keratitis in patients with MGD-related dry eye. METHODS: A total of 122 MGD patients who visited the Department of Ophthalmology, The First People's Hospital of Chun'an County from June 2022 to June 2023 were selected for retrospective study. Patients were divided into k

STAT1 gain-of-function and chronic demodicosis.

Heterozygous STAT1 gain-of-function (GOF) mutations result in a combined form of immunodeficiency which is the most common genetic cause of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). We present a pedigree with a GOF mutation in STAT1, manifesting with chronic demodicosis in the form of a facial papulopustular eruption, blepharitis, and chalazion. So far, demodicosis has been described in only one family with STAT1-GOF mutation. We suggest that chronic demodicosis is an under-recognized feature of the immune dysregulation disorder caused by STAT1 gain-of-function mutations.

Effects of preventive anthelmintic treatment on acquired resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes in naturally infected cattle.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of different types of chemoprophylaxis in first season grazing calves on their resistance against a natural reinfection with Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora in the second grazing season. Thirty helminth-naive crossbred calves were randomly divided in three groups of 10 animals. The animals of group B received an ivermectin sustained release bolus on day 0. The calves of group D were treated on days 0 and 56 with a subcutaneous injection of doramectin (0.2 mg kg(-1) BW). Group C was the untreated control group ('immune' co

Case histories of insect- or arachnid-caused human illness.

Insects, arachnids, and other medically important arthropods affect human health directly by bites, stings, and blisters, and indirectly by disease transmission. In this paper, three widely divergent cases of insect- or arachnid-caused human illness are presented--a spider bite, a mosquito-borne disease case, and an imaginary mite problem. Some key references are included for each topic, as well as editorial comment to add perspective.

A survey of camel (Camelus dromedarius) diseases in Jordan.

Information on incidences of camel (Camelus dromedarius) diseases in Jordan is scarce. In this survey, 369 live and 156 slaughtered camels were examined in four Jordanian geographic regions and the proportion of diseased camels was calculated. Intestinal parasite ova were detected in 98% of camels; one or more species of external parasites were found on the skin of all camels; 33% had nasal myiasis; and hydatid cysts were identified in 44% of the slaughtered animals. Sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei var. cameli) and trypanasomiasis, two diseases of economic importance, were also diagnosed in

Comparative study of 5% permethrin, 10% neem leaf extract, and 10% brotowali stem extract for scabies treatment.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, a contagious skin infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, remains a significant public health issue, particularly in developing countries. Permethrin is the standard treatment; however, emerging limitations such as potential mite resistance highlight the need for effective alternatives. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy, safety, and quality-of-life impact of 5% permethrin lotion with 10% neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract lotion and 10% brotowali (Tinospora crispa) stem extract lotion among students in Islamic boarding schools, a population hig

Characterization of Springtail (Arrhopalites caecus) for Use in Soil Ecotoxicity Testing.

Springtails (subclass: Collembola) represent one of the most extensively studied invertebrate groups in soil ecotoxicology. This is because of their ease of laboratory culture, significant ecological role, and sensitivity to environmental contaminants. Folsomia candida (family: Isotomidae) is a globally widespread parthenogenetic species that is prevalent in laboratory toxicity testing with springtails. Conversely, Arrhopalites caecus (family: Arrhopalitidae), a parthenogenic globular springtail species, remains untested in soil ecotoxicology. This species is found in diverse habitats, includi

Transcriptional responses of detoxification genes to coumaphos in a nontarget species, Galleria mellonella (greater wax moth) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), in the beehive environment.

The greater wax moth Galleria mellonella is a cosmopolitan pest of hives of the western honey bee Apis mellifera, where it remains exposed to varroicides applied by beekeepers in past decades as pest management chemicals for control of Varroa destructor, a devastating ectoparasite of bees. The prolonged presence of coumaphos residues, an organophosphate varroicide, in beeswax may be responsible for current levels of tolerance exhibited by G. mellonella, a non-target species that infests beehives. In this study, a field-collected strain of waxworms exhibited a higher LC50 value for coumaphos th

Prevalence and risk factors associated with cat parasites in Italy: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Parasites that infect cats include protozoa, helminths and arthropods, many of which are transmissible to humans. Effective control relies on a good knowledge of parasite distribution and the risk factors for infection. The present study was aimed at evaluating the prevalence of major feline parasites in Italy and the risk factors associated with their occurrence. METHODS: Over a 12-month study period, feces, hair and ectoparasites from naturally infected cats from feral colonies, shelters and private households were analyzed at 13 study centers across Italy. Samples from these ca

The efficacy of a nested polymerase chain reaction in detecting the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis for diagnosing scabies.

BACKGROUND: A widespread scabies infestation, associated with long-term residence in nursing homes, is becoming an issue in high-income countries. Mineral oil examination is regarded as the gold standard in diagnosing scabies, but the sensitivity of this method is generally low - approximately 50%. Molecular techniques may contribute to enhancing the sensitivity of current tests for laboratory diagnosis of human scabies. OBJECTIVES: To develop new primers for a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis to increa

Cockroach allergens and asthma.

Asthma and allergy are the most common diseases associated with cockroach infestation of houses in the United States and other parts of the world. Sensitization and exposure to cockroach allergens is associated with increased asthma morbidity in the United States, especially among lower socioeconomic groups, including African American and Hispanic populations. Exposure to cockroach allergens in the first 3 months of life has been associated with repeated wheezing and asthma. The principal domestic cockroach species are Blattella germanica and Periplaneta americana. Both species produce several
