Schools are increasingly concerned about student cannabis use with the recent legalization in Canada; however, little is known about how to effectively intervene when students violate school substance use policies. The purpose of this study is to assess the disciplinary approaches present in secondary schools prior to cannabis legalization and examine associations with youth cannabis use. This study used Year 6 (2017/2018) data from the COMPASS (Cannabis use, Obesity, Mental Health, Physical Activity, Alcohol use, Smoking, Sedentary behavior) study including 66,434 students in grades 9 through

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Rural communities often have worse health outcomes, have less access to care, and are less diverse than urban communities. Much of the research on rural health disparities examines disparities between rural and urban communities, with fewer studies on disparities within rural communities. This report provides an overview of racial/ethnic health disparities for selected indicators in rural areas of the United States.
REPORTING PERIOD: 2012-2015.
DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: Self-reported data from the 2012-2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were pooled to evaluate ra

BACKGROUND: The sequelae of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) includes HIV infection, engagement in HIV risk behaviors, substance misuse, and intimate partner violence (IPV). Although Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately infected with HIV in the U.S.-especially in urban locations such as New York City-there is limited research with larger samples of Black MSM of varied HIV status regarding the prevalence of CSA and the potential negative consequence with respect to a "syndemic," i.e., the co-occurrence of adverse conditions such as HIVrisk, substance misuse, and IPV.

Intermittent alcohol exposure is a common pattern of adolescent alcohol use that can lead to binge drinking episodes. Alcohol use is known to modulate the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in neuronal communication, neuroplasticity, neuroinflammation and behavior. Adolescent male Wistar rats were exposed to 4-week intermittent alcohol intoxication (3 g/kg injections for 4 days/week) or saline (N = 12 per group). After alcohol deprivation, adult rats were assessed for emotionality and cognition and the gene expression of the ECS and other factors related to behavior and neuroinfla

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to ethanol (EtOH) elicits a range of neuro-developmental abnormalities, microcephaly to behavioral deficits. Impaired protein synthesis has been connected to pathogenesis of EtOH-induced brain damage and abnormal neuron development. However, mechanisms underlying these impairments of protein synthesis are not known. In this study, we illustrate the effects of EtOH on programmed cell death protein 4 (PDCD4), a tumor and translation repressor.
METHODS: Primary cortical neurons (PCNs) were treated with 2.5 and 4 mg/ml EtOH for different time points (4 to 24 hours),

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol overconsumption and abuse lead to alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which is a major chronic liver disease worldwide. Chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) have an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease. However, the role of CHI3L1 in ALD has not yet been reported. In the present study, we investigated the effect of CHI3L1 on chronic plus binge ethanol-induced liver injury.
METHODS: CHI3L1 knock out (KO) mice and their littermate control mice based on C57BL/6 (10-12 weeks old) were fed on a Lieber-DeCarli diet containing 6.6% ethanol for 10 days. And, CHI3L1

Background: Although physical and sexual abuse have been linked to health risk behaviors as well as mental health problems, it is unclear whether those young women who have experienced both physical and sexual abuse are at greatest risk. To examine the independent associations between physical, sexual, and/or both types of abuse and health status, mental health, and health risk behaviors among a national school-aged sample of girls. We hypothesized that the magnitude of risk would be highest for those reporting both types of abuse compared to those reporting neither or one type of abuse. Metho

Alcoholism is a serious addiction that can lead to various health complications such as liver fibrosis, steatosis, and cirrhosis. Carvacrol is present in many plant-based essential oils and used as a preservative in the food industry. In this study, we have investigated the hepatoprotective role of carvacrol against ethanol-induced liver toxicity in mice. To determine the effect of carvacrol on liver injury parameters, 5 doses of 50% ethanol (10 mL/kg body weight) were orally administered every 12 h for inducing the hepatotoxicity in experimental mice. Interestingly, carvacrol pre-treatment (5

Chronic prenatal exposure to ethanol can lead to a spectrum of teratogenic outcomes that are classified in humans as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). One of the most prevalent and persistent neurocognitive components of FASD is attention deficits, and it is now thought that these attention deficits differ from traditional attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in their quality and response to medication. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying attention deficits in FASD are not well understood. We show here that after developmental binge-pattern ethanol exposure, adult mic

Ethanol consumption can lead to hepatic steatosis that contributes to late-stage liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. In this study, we investigated the potential protective effect of a flavonoid, luteolin, on ethanol-induced fatty liver development and liver injury. Six-wk-old male C57BL/6 mice were divided into 3 groups: a control group; a group exposed to alcohol by using a chronic and binge ethanol feeding protocol (EtOH); and a group that was administered daily 50 mg/kg of luteolin in addition to ethanol exposure (EtOH + Lut). A chronic and binge ethanol feeding

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with a compromised innate and adaptive immune responses to infectious disease. Mucosa-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells play a critical role in antibacterial host defense. However, whether alcohol-associated deficits in innate and adaptive immune responses are mediated by alterations in MAIT cells remains unclear.
METHODS: To investigate the impact of alcohol on MAIT cells, mice were treated with binge-on-chronic alcohol for 10 days and sacrificed at day 11. MAIT cells in the barrier organs (lung, liver, and intestine) were characterized

Fever plays an indispensable role in host defense processes and is used as a rapid index of infection severity. Unfortunately, there are also substantial individual differences in fever reactions with biological sex, immunological history, and other demographic variables contributing to adverse outcomes of infection. The present series of studies were designed to test the hypothesis that a history of adolescent alcohol misuse may be a latent experiential variable that determines fever severity using polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C), a synthetic form of double-stranded RNA that mimics

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a worldwide public health concern. While PAE is known to be associated with low birth weight, little is known about timing and quantity of PAE on fetal growth. This study investigated the association between periconceptional and prenatal alcohol exposure and longitudinal fetal growth, focusing on timing and quantity in a high exposure cohort.
METHODS: The Safe Passage Study was a prospective cohort study, including 1698 pregnant women. Two-dimensional transabdominal ultrasound examinations were performed to measure fetal femur length, abdominal a

Binge drinking that typically begins during adolescence can have long-lasting neurobehavioral consequences, including alterations in the central and peripheral immune systems. Central and peripheral inflammation disrupts blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and exacerbates pathology in diseases commonly associated with disturbed BBB function. Thus, the goal of the present studies was to determine long-lasting effects of adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) on BBB integrity. For AIE, male and female Sprague Dawley rats were repeatedly exposed to ethanol (4 g/kg, intragastrically) or water durin

Introduction Depression is one of the common comorbidities seen in chronic alcohol use disorder. Also, alcohol withdrawal induces depression and anxiety, which is associated with relapse in alcohol consumption. Minocycline, a tetracycline derivative, has shown an antidepressant effect in preclinical models. However, their effect on alcohol withdrawal-induced depression has not been studied. Therefore, the current study has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of minocycline on alcohol abstinence-induced depression models in mice. Method We conducted the study in two models. C57bl/6 mice were
