Effectiveness of a computerised working memory training in adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a computerised working memory (WM) training on memory, response inhibition, fluid intelligence, scholastic abilities and the recall of stories in adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities attending special education. METHOD: A total of 95 adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities were randomly assigned to either a training adaptive to each child's progress in WM, a non-adaptive WM training, or to a control group. RESULTS: Verbal short-term memory (STM) improved significantly from pr

Hypnotic induction decreases anterior default mode activity.

The 'default mode' network refers to cortical areas that are active in the absence of goal-directed activity. In previous studies, decreased activity in the 'default mode' has always been associated with increased activation in task-relevant areas. We show that the induction of hypnosis can reduce anterior default mode activity during rest without increasing activity in other cortical regions. We assessed brain activation patterns of high and low suggestible people while resting in the fMRI scanner and while engaged in visual tasks, in and out of hypnosis. High suggestible participants in hypn

Adaptive control deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): the role of error processing.

Cognitive performance of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by large moment-to-moment fluctuations in cognitive control reflected by a highly inconsistent and inaccurate response style. It has been suggested that abnormal error processing underlies this failure to implement adequate control. We investigated the error-related negativity (ERN), a negative deflection in the event-related potential (ERP) time-locked to erroneous responses in 16 rigorously screened ADHD boys aged 8-12 years and 16 age-matched normal control boys during a modified Eriksen

Visual Biopolitics in Crisis: Multimodal Analysis of Tuberculosis in the Early Republican Period and COVID-19 Health Communication in Turkey.

This study investigates how visual materials used during tuberculosis (1930s-1940s) and COVID-19 in Turkey, supported and reflected evolving forms of biopolitical governance. Drawing on data from the state-funded project "Analysis of Public Health Visual Communication Methods" (TÜBİTAK Project No. 123K980), we apply critical multimodal discourse analysis to explore how visual campaigns shaped public perceptions of health, risk, responsibility, and citizenship. Our source materials include archival visuals from Yaşamak Yolu, a journal published by the Istanbul Anti-Tuberculosis Society, illustr

Loneliness in Seriously Ill Nursing Home Residents During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: Loneliness and social isolation coexist, making it difficult to study each separately. The COVID-19 lockdown provided an unprecedented and ethically viable opportunity to study loneliness in seriously ill nursing home residents under uniformly imposed social isolation conditions. Objective: To understand the phenomenon of loneliness of the seriously ill nursing home patients under a uniform social isolation condition imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Design: Cross-sectional, semi-structured interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed qualitatively usi

"We want to be heard": Perspectives on mental health care among patients at a federally qualified health center.

CONTEXT: Depression is a debilitating condition associated with significant medical, social, and economic costs for individuals and communities. Despite its widespread prevalence, depression is typically under-identified and under-treated, particularly for people of color and lower socioeconomic status. Primary care settings such as federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) offer an ideal opportunity to rectify this gap for underserved communities. OBJECTIVE: From 2020-2021, we conducted a phone-based, qualitative assessment to understand what factors hindered and helped patients diagnosed w

The Role of the Human Visual Cortex in Assessment of the Long-Term Durability of Retinal Gene Therapy in Follow-on RPE65 Clinical Trial Patients.

PURPOSE: Gene therapy (GT) has offered immense hope to individuals who are visually impaired because of RPE65 mutations. Although GT has shown great success in clinical trials enrolling these individuals, evidence for stability and durability of this treatment over time is still unknown. Herein we explored the value of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as an objective measure to assess independently the longevity of retinal GT. DESIGN: Individuals with RPE65 mutations who underwent GT in their worse-seeing eye in a phase 1 clinical trial received a second subretinal injection in th

A degenerative retinal process in HIV-associated non-infectious retinopathy.

HIV retinopathy is the most common non-infectious complication in the eyes of HIV-positive individuals. Oncotic lesions in the retinal nerve fiber layer, referred to as cotton wool spots (CWS), and intraretinal (IR) hemorrhages are frequently observed but are not unique to this pathology. HIV-positive patients have impaired color vision and contrast sensitivity, which worsens with age. Evidence of inner-retinal lesions and damage have been documented ophthalmoscopically, however their long term structural effect has not been investigated. It has been hypothesized that they may be partially res

The relationship between performance and fMRI signal during working memory in patients with schizophrenia, unaffected co-twins, and control subjects.

While behavioral research shows working memory impairments in schizophrenics and their relatives, functional neuroimaging studies of patients and healthy controls show conflicting findings of hypo- and hyperactivation, possibly indicating different relationships between physiological activity and performance. In a between-subjects regression analysis of fMRI activation and performance, low performance was associated with relatively lower activation in patients than controls, while higher performance was associated with higher activation in patients than controls in DLPFC and parietal cortex, b

Subclinical carriers and conversions in Leber hereditary optic neuropathy: a prospective psychophysical study.

PURPOSE: The authors previously presented the results of their 2001 field investigation to rural Brazil to investigate a 336-member pedigree of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). The present work describes the yearly field investigations 2001 to 2005, utilizing a variety of highly sophisticated psychophysical and electrophysiologic procedures, in asymptomatic LHON carriers, some of whom converted to affected status. METHODS: Careful, repeated examinations of 75 carriers of homoplasmic 11778 LHON mtDNA J-haplogroup mutants were performed as part of the field investigation of this pedigr

Neuropsychological evidence for a spatial bias in visual short-term memory after left posterior ventral damage.

For the first time, we report a spatial bias in visual short-term memory (VSTM) after left medial and inferior occipito-temporal damage. Our patient D.M. showed a spatial bias in report from VSTM, being more accurate at reporting stimuli presented in her left than her right visual field (Experiment 1). This spatial bias could not be attributed to a visual field deficit (Experiment 2) and was based on the relative rather than the absolute locations of the stimuli (Experiment 3). It was reduced when the transfer of items to VSTM was facilitated-for example, by grouping stimuli (Experiment 4) or

Neural mechanisms of detecting and orienting attention toward unattended threatening somatosensory targets. I. Intermodal effects.

Our previous work has identified four components of the somatosensory-evoked potential elicited by painful electrical stimulation of the sural nerve that might index an involuntary process that detects and orients attention toward threatening somatosensory stimuli. These components include a negativity over the central scalp at 70-110 ms poststimulus (CN70-110), a contralateral temporal negativity at 100-180 ms (CTN100-180), a frontocentral negativity at 130-200 ms, and a positive potential at 270-340 ms (the pain-related P2). The results of the endogenous cuing experiment used here suggest th

Reward value coding distinct from risk attitude-related uncertainty coding in human reward systems.

When deciding between different options, individuals are guided by the expected (mean) value of the different outcomes and by the associated degrees of uncertainty. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify brain activations coding the key decision parameters of expected value (magnitude and probability) separately from uncertainty (statistical variance) of monetary rewards. Participants discriminated behaviorally between stimuli associated with different expected values and uncertainty. Stimuli associated with higher expected values elicited monotonically increasing activation

Neural correlates of conscious perception in the attentional blink.

If attending to a target in a rapid stream of visual stimuli within the next 400 ms or so, a second target in the stream is frequently not detected by an observer. This so-called attentional blink can provide a comparison of neural signals elicited by identical stimuli that, in one condition, reach conscious awareness and, in the other, fail to be selected for awareness. In the present study, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), differences of neural activation were studied in an attentional blink experiment in order to identify brain regions putatively involved in

Executive and motivational inhibition: associations with self-report measures related to inhibition.

Inhibition involves the withholding or suppressing of attention or responses to irrelevant or distracting stimuli. We examined the relationship between five experimental tasks of inhibition, represented by two measures of executive, intentional control inhibition and three measures of motivational inhibition characterized by bottom-up interruption of affective and reward/punishment sensitive mechanisms. Associations between these experimental tasks with three self-report measures related to inhibition were also examined. Correlational analyses indicated a small but significant association betw

Ideomotor limb apraxia in Huntington's disease: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Ideomotor limb apraxia is the disturbance of planning and of execution of motor activity, which is not caused by a dysfunction of the motor or sensory nervous system. Apraxia is a diagnostic criterion in dementialike Alzheimer's disease. However, this symptom may also occur in dementia with subcortical lesions like Huntington's disease (HD), a hereditary, devastating neurodegenerative disease leading to neurological and psychiatric dysfunction. The aim of our study is to determine the correlation between the occurrence of ideomotor limb apraxia and neuropsychological deficits in H
