Intradural conus and cauda equina tumours: a retrospective review of presentation, diagnosis and early outcome.

This is a retrospective review of the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of 62 patients with histologically proven intradural conus and cauda equina tumours. In the majority of cases the clinical presentation clearly suggests the need for further investigation. One fifth of the patients had small intramedullary tumours, which presented particular diagnostic difficulty and required sophisticated cross sectional imaging.

Neural tube defects: clinical correlations.

There are several approaches that can be applied to the analysis of malformations of the CNS. One practical way in making clinical correlations is to divide neural tube defects into those that arise during the period of neurulation and those that arise thereafter. This concept applies to cranial and spinal lesions and makes it possible to interpret clinical findings with embryological events. Malformations of the CNS that arise during the period of neurulation are not covered by skin and can be diagnosed prenatally by amniocentesis. Postneurulation CNS malformations are skin-covered and have d

[Radiologic diagnosis of the orbit and anterior cranial fossa].

Basing on frequent diseases associated with typical changes of the orbita and the anterior cranial fossa - osteomas, fibrous dysplasia, meningiomas of the sphenoid bone, neurofibromatosis, mucoceles and pyoceles, dermoid tumours, malignant tumours and transmitted inflammatory processes - the x-ray diagnostic procedure is explained. Plain x-ray films and computed tomography are the most important methods, whereas examinations employing film tomography and angiography are now restricted to a few selected cases only.

Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome with Epibulbar Dermoid: An Unusual Association in a Patient with 4p Deletion and Functional Xp Disomy.

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a contiguous gene and multiple malformation syndrome that results from a deletion in the 4p16.3 region. We describe here a 6-month-old girl that presented with WHS features but also displayed unusual findings, such as epibulbar dermoid in the left eye, ear tags, and left microtia. Although on G-banding her karyotype appeared to be normal, chromosomal microarray analysis revealed an ∼13-Mb 4p16.3p15.33 deletion and an ∼9-Mb Xp22.33p22.31 duplication, resulting from a balanced maternal t(X;4)(p22.31;p15.33) translocation. The patient presented with functional Xp

Endoscopic transnasal resection of Eustachian-tube dermoid in a new-born infant.

INTRODUCTION: Dermoids of the Eustachian tube are rare benign developmental tumours that typically occur in female children. General consensus of classification and nomenclature has still not been reached. The treatment of choice consists of a radical surgical excision. Several approaches have been described and few cases are reported in literature. A gross total resection is now safely achievable through an endoscopic mini-invasive approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have reported a case of dermoid pedicled in the left Eustachian tube and resected with a pure endoscopic transnasal approach.

Congenital malignant melanoma of the scalp in a 25-day-old neonate.

We present a case of congenital malignant melanoma of the scalp in a neonate. The child was born through caesarean section with a swelling, the size of a tennis ball, on the posterior scalp. At presentation to the clinic at 25 days after birth, the swelling had significantly increased in size and ulcerated. An excision was carried out but, because of extensive haemorrhage and haemodynamic instability, the procedure was limited to subtotal resection. Later on, completion of the excision and flap coverage of the wound were performed. After an initial stable course of a few months, the child came

Neoplasms of the nasopharynx in children.

Neoplasms of the nasopharynx are rare in children, but they threaten the child's life when they do occur. The nasopharynx tends to harbor dysontogenetic neoplasms. After classification into benign and malignant groups, nasopharyngeal neoplasms in children can be further characterized according to the age of the patients in which the clinical manifestations usually appear. Dermoids and teratomas are the most frequently encountered neoplasms of the nasopharynx in infants and may produce airway obstruction and dysphagia. Among the benign tumors of the nasopharynx in children, the juvenile angiofi

Expansion of the phenotypic spectrum and description of molecular findings in a cohort of patients with oculocutaneous mosaic RASopathies.

BACKGROUND: Postzygotic KRAS, HRAS, NRAS, and FGFR1 mutations result in a group of mosaic RASopathies characterized by related developmental anomalies in eye, skin, heart, and brain. These oculocutaneous disorders include oculoectodermal syndrome (OES) encephalo-cranio-cutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL), and Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome (SFMS). Here, we report the results of the clinical and molecular characterization of a novel cohort of patients with oculocutaneous mosaic RASopathies. METHODS: Two OES, two ECCL, and two SFMS patients were ascertained in the study. In addition, two sub

Congenital dermal sinus tract in the lateral buttock: unusual presentation of a typically midline lesion.

Congenital dermal sinus tracts most commonly involve the midline and may communicate with the central nervous system. We present a 3-year-old girl with a pit in the upper lateral buttock noted since birth. Surgical exploration revealed a firm tract that dissipated in the gluteal fascia, and ultrasound confirmed the absence of any deeper extension. Microscopic examination revealed a sinus tract lined by dermal appendages and surrounded by an exuberant inflammatory reaction to hair. This location is distinctly unusual, and our report expands the clinical spectrum of congenital dermal sinus tract

Carcinoids of the ovary: an analysis of 329 reported cases.

This evaluation was undertaken to supply precise and reliable detailed information to investigators actively working in carcinoid and related gynecological research fields. A statistical evaluation was performed on 329 cases of ovarian carcinoid registered in the Niigata Registry where world-wide information of gut-pancreatic endocrinomas has been maintained by a computer-analyzing system. Cases without individual identification or those recorded in groups were excluded. The evaluation was carried out mainly by a comparison between two groups of cases with cystic teratoma/dermoid (Group A) and

Diagnostic methods in orbital diseases.

Development of diagnostic methods for orbital diseases have practically revolutionized the approach to the patient with orbital disease. These newer methods have helped the clinician to improve the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis prior to biopsy, to localize the area to be biopsied, and to prevent inappropriate surgery. These techniques have also allowed the pathologist to render more definitive diagnosis. These methods include ultrasound, computerized axial tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and electron micro
