Electroencephalogram abnormalities in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often are evaluated with electroencephalogram (EEG) studies to assess their risk for seizures or other underlying abnormalities. Their risk is estimated at 7% - 42%. EEG studies were conducted on a subgroup of children while following established practice parameters for evaluating children for ASD. Abnormal EEG results were obtained in 85 (27%) of the 316 children evaluatedfor ASD. Within the subset of abnormal results, 64 children had autism, 10 had an ASD or milder presentation, 6 had another developmental disorder, 3 had Rett syndrome, had Dow

QT PRODACT: comparison of non-clinical studies for drug-induced delay in ventricular repolarization and their role in safety evaluation in humans.

Drug concentrations that would prolong repolarization parameters by 10%, including action potential duration (APD90, APD30-90), in in vitro assays using guinea-pig papillary muscle and QTc intervals in in vivo assays using conscious dogs, conscious monkeys, and anesthetized dogs were compared. Although, both the in vitro and in vivo assays showed concentration-dependent responses for compounds that have been classified as torsadogenic in humans, only a weak correlation in EC10 values was observed between the in vitro and in vivo assays. Among the in vivo QT assays, the EC10 values obtained fro

Thermoregulatory effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in humans.

RATIONALE: Although 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; Ecstasy) has been reported to cause fatal hyperthermia, few studies of the effects of MDMA on core body temperature in humans have been conducted demonstrating increased body temperature. In rats, MDMA causes hyperthermia at warm ambient temperatures but hypothermia at cold ones. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the physiological and subjective effects of MDMA in humans were determined at cold (18 degrees C) and warm (30 degrees C) ambient temperatures in a temperature and humidity-controlled laboratory. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers w

Early clinical results of the telemetric adjustable pulmonary artery banding FloWatch-PAB.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment of pulmonary artery banding (PAB) may be a challenging procedure in complex congenital heart defects. Whatever the technique used, subsequent re-operations are frequently needed to control the pulmonary blood flow or pressures. OBJECTIVE: To report the efficacy of a new telemetric adjustable PAB (FloWatch-PAB) operated with the help of an external control unit that transmits to the implant energy and commands to further narrow or release the pulmonary artery using radiofrequency waves. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a multicenter, prospective, nonrandomized, single-arm clinic

Experimental heart failure in rats: effects on cardiovascular circadian rhythms and on myocardial beta-adrenergic signaling.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic heart failure frequently show blunted circadian blood pressure profiles. The mechanisms involved in the loss of physiological day-night variation are still unclear, but a continuously active sympathetic nervous system could play a role. The present study evaluated long-term consequences of rat heart failure on cardiovascular circadian patterns in vivo, and on density and function of cardiac beta-adrenoceptor subtypes in vitro, as a marker of cardiac adrenergic drive. METHODS: Heart failure in rats was induced by coronary artery ligation leading to infarct siz

New telemetric system for daily pulmonary function surveillance of lung transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Following lung transplantation, prompt diagnosis and therapy of acute pulmonary rejection and infection episodes relies primarily upon changes in pulmonary function and determines long-term outcome. We tested a new system that allows daily monitoring of the patient's pulmonary status even after discharge from the hospital. METHODS: Seven lung transplant recipients from our center were equipped with a telemetric monitoring device consisting of a portable flowmeter and a special modem unit. The flowmeter measures forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume per second (FEV1

Cardiovascular responses to cocaine self-administration: acute and chronic tolerance.

The nature and the mechanism of tolerance to the cardiovascular responses to cocaine self-administration were studied in rats implanted with telemetric devices. The first infusion of cocaine (1 mg/kg/infusion) on day 1 of testing produced rapid and brief increases in mean arterial blood pressure and in heart rate. Subsequent infusions in the same session produced minimal effects. With chronic testing, there were gradual reductions in cardiovascular responses to the first infusion in the daily session and enhancements in the daily cocaine intake, with significant changes occurring by the fourth

Reorganization of nurse scheduling reduces the risk of healthcare associated infections.

Efficient prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HAIs) is still an open problem. Using contact data from wearable sensors at a short-stay geriatric ward, we propose a proof-of-concept modeling study that reorganizes nurse schedules for efficient infection control. This strategy switches and reassigns nurses' tasks through the optimization of shift timelines, while respecting feasibility constraints and satisfying patient-care requirements. Through a Susceptible-Colonized-Susceptible transmission model, we found that schedules reorganization reduced HAI risk by 27% (95% con

Rural-Urban Comparison of Telehome Monitoring for Patients with Chronic Heart Failure.

INTRODUCTION: Rural geographic isolation may act as a promoting or restraining variable to the diffusion of technology and healthy aging in the community. Telehome monitoring (TM) leverages technology to support seniors living in the community with chronic conditions. To date, limited research has investigated the utilization of TM in rural settings. This study assesses the comparative utilization of TM for patients with heart failure in rural versus urban environments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving chart reviews of all patients enrolled in the TM progr

Preoperative Inflammatory Burden Index Predicts Atrial Fibrillation After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common and serious complication after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), leading to increased morbidity and healthcare utilization. Although systemic inflammation is a well-established driver of POAF pathogenesis, no composite preoperative inflammatory biomarker has been validated for risk stratification in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the novel Inflammatory Burden Index (IBI)-the first composite biomarker combining acute-phase (C-reactive protein, CRP) and chronic cellular (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte rati

From behavioral signals to therapy management: a real-world pilot implementation of human-in-the-loop AI workflow in proactive patient care.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an established therapy for chronic pain, but post-implant care depends on timely identification of evolving patient needs. Remote monitoring may help detect therapy-use changes that scheduled follow-up and patient-initiated contact can miss. We evaluated Proactive Intelligence, a workflow-integrated, human-in-the-loop AI recommender using passively collected SCS device-interaction data to support care without added patients' data-entry burden. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational real-world pilot among research-consented patients impl

Case Report: A multidisciplinary, protocol-driven pathway from recurrent pregnancy loss to live birth in an anti-Ro/SSA-positive primary Sjögren's syndrome pregnancy with literature review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal anti-Ro/SSA (Sjögren's syndrome-related antigen A) [± anti-La/SSB (Sjögren's syndrome type B antigen)] antibodies can lead to neonatal lupus, which may present most severely as autoimmune congenital atrioventricular block (CAVB). Although CAVB is uncommon (~ 2% of anti-Ro/SSA-positive pregnancies), once a complete block develops, spontaneous reversal is rare, and many affected infants require permanent pacemaker implantation. Consequently, prevention and early detection are critical components of management, particularly in pregnancies following previous antibody-mediated

Unidirectional Orbit Determination for Extended Users Based on Navigation Ka-Band Inter-Satellite Links.

Traditional spacecraft orbit determination primarily employs two methodologies: ground station/survey ship-based orbit determination and global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based orbit determination. The ground tracking measurement system, reliant on multiple tracking stations or ships, presents a less favorable efficiency-to-cost ratio. For high-orbit satellites, GNSS orbit determination is hindered by a limited number of receivable satellites, weak signal strength and suboptimal geometric configurations, thereby failing to meet the demands for the continuous, high-precision orbit measu

Large language models accurately extract aortic information from abdominal imaging reports in a large, real-world database.

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining robust surveillance programs for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is important, but these programs are expensive and labor-intensive, typically requiring manual data review by trained health care professionals. Studies have shown that natural language processing software can assist in these functions, but each task-specific algorithm requires human-directed training before use. Our objective was to evaluate the use of a large language model (LLM) to extract AAA-related data using generalized artificial intelligence, negating the need for task-based training. METHODS: T

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Characteristics of Play Associated with Head Impact Severity During Tackling in Youth Football.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decade, concussions and subconcussive brain trauma in football and other high impact sports have become of increasing concern. Tackling, in youth football, accounts for a high proportion of head impacts and injuries, including concussions. Thus, minimizing head impact severity during tackling may help in reducing concussion risk and subconcussive brain trauma. However, it is unknown how discrete aspects of play in youth football relate to head impact severity during tackling. METHODS: 25 youth tackle football players (12.9 ± 0.6 yr) wore helmets outfitted with the He

Physiological Demands of a Self-Paced Firefighter Air-Management Course and Determination of Work Efficiency.

UNLABELLED: Firefighters often complete air management courses (AMC) to assess the ability to tolerate personal protective equipment, appropriately manage the breathing system and assess occupational performance. Little information is known relative to the physiological demands of AMCs, nor how to assess work efficiency in order to characterize occupational performance and evaluate progress. PURPOSE: To assess the physiological demands of an AMC and examine differences across BMI categories. A secondary aim was to develop an equation to assess work efficiency in firefighters. METHODS: Fifty-

Chronic cochlear implantation with and without electric stimulation in a mouse model induces robust cochlear influx of CX3CR1+/GFP macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation is an effective auditory rehabilitation strategy for those with profound hearing loss, including those with residual low frequency hearing through use of hybrid cochlear implantation techniques. Post-mortem studies demonstrate the nearly ubiquitous presence of intracochlear fibrosis and neo-ossification following cochlear implantation. Current evidence suggests post-implantation intracochlear fibrosis is associated with delayed loss of residual acoustic hearing in hybrid cochlear implant (CI) recipients and may also negatively influence outcomes in traditional

Use of a Smart Watch for Early Detection of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation: Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices with photoplethysmography (PPG) technology can be useful for detecting paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), which often goes uncaptured despite being a leading cause of stroke. OBJECTIVE: This study is the first part of a 2-phase study that aimed at developing a method for immediate detection of paroxysmal AF using PPG-integrated wearable devices. In this study, the diagnostic performance of 2 major smart watches, Apple Watch Series 3 and Fitbit (FBT) Charge HR Wireless Activity Wristband, each equipped with a PPG sensor, was compared, and the pulse rate data outp
