Chronic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia: clinico-statistical, histological and immunohistochemical study.

Chronic gastritis has a high incidence in adults, causing progressive destruction of glandular structures, favoring the development of gastric atrophy. The association of chronic gastritis with intestinal type metaplasia of gastric mucosa has a poor outcome as intestinal metaplasia is regarded as a precancerous lesion. Metaplasia is common in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection and also heavy smokers. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between chronic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. The study was conducted on a total of 1218 patients, aged between 5 and 90 years

Presence of Helicobacter pylori in subgingival plaque of periodontitis patients with and without dyspepsia, detected by polymerase chain reaction and culture.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is an important gastrointestinal pathogen that is strongly associated with gastritis as well as peptic ulcer disease. Antimicrobial therapy frequently fails to cure H. pylori infection, which suggests there may be sanctuary sites where the organism resides. This study was aimed to assess the role of oral cavity as a reservoir of H. pylori by evaluating the occurrence of the organism in subgingival plaque of dyspeptic patients by polymerase chain reaction as well as culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty chronic periodontitis patients whose biopsy specimens were

Assessment of helicobacter pylori prevalence by scorpion real-time PCR in chronic tonsillitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Occasionally, bacteria or viruses enter the tonsils and these organs become overwhelmed by bacterial or viral infection leading to inflammation. Some studies confirmed the presence of Helicobacter pylori in tonsillar specimens of patients suffering from chronic tonsillitis and some others did not. The difference in results in various studies might be due to different laboratory methods. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of H. pylori Deoxynucleic acid (DNA) in archival tonsillar tissues of patients with chronic tonsillitis by a rapid, sensitive, and specific tech

High prevalence of duodenal ulcer in a tertiary care hospital in the city of São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

CONTEXT: In spite of Helicobacter pylori infection being the etiological cause of peptic ulcer and its high prevalence in Brazil, the prevalence of peptic ulcer disease has been poorly studied. OBJECTIVES: To verify the peptic ulcer disease prevalence in patients of a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: Diagnostic findings from 1,478 consecutive endoscopies were correlated with the urease test results for H. pylori infection diagnosis and demographic data in a total of 3,779 endoscopies performed in 2005. The mean age of the patients was 51.14 ± 16.46, being 613 (41.5%) men. RESULTS: Peptic ul

In vitro and in vivo anti-Helicobacter pylori activity of Calophyllum brasiliense Camb.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Calophyllum brasiliense (Camb.) is a medicinal tree that grows particularly in the hilly and forested regions of Brazil. Preparations from its stem bark are popular remedies for the treatment of chronic ulcers. Since earlier investigations on bark extracts evidenced gastroprotective and gastric acid inhibitory properties, this study evaluated the effects of hydroethanolic extract (HEECb) and the dichloromethanic fraction (DCMF), from Calophyllum brasiliense stem bark, against Helicobacter pylori, in vitro and in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The in vitro assays were performe

[Endoscopic resection of inflammatory gastric fibroid polyp--a case report].

INTRODUCTION: An inflammatory fibroid polyp is a rare condition with frequent localisation in the antrum of the stomach. Because of the localisation in the bottom parts of the mucosa and submucosa, a histological diagnosis is difficult to establish at endoscopic biopsies. So, a correct diagnosis is histologically possible after surgical excision which is a common manner of treatment. Many authors have shown that endoscopic removal of an inflammatory fibroid polyp is possible. CASE OUTLINE: We are presenting a case of complete endoscopic resection of an inflammatory fibroid polyp of the stomac

A proteomic approach for the identification of bismuth-binding proteins in Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori is a major human pathogen that can cause peptic ulcers and chronic gastritis. Bismuth-based triple or quadruple therapies are commonly recommended for the treatment of H. pylori infections. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying treatment with bismuth are currently not fully understood. We have conducted a detailed comparative proteomic analysis of H. pylori cells both before and after treatment with colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS). Eight proteins were found to be significantly upregulated or downregulated in the presence of CBS (20 microg mL(-1)). Bismuth-induced

Modulation of crystalline Proteus mirabilis biofilm development on urinary catheters.

The crystalline biofilms formed by Proteus mirabilis can seriously complicate the care of patients undergoing long-term bladder catheterization. The generation of alkaline urine by the bacterial urease causes calcium and magnesium phosphates to precipitate from urine and accumulate in the catheter biofilm, blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. The pH at which these salts crystallize from a urine sample, the nucleation pH (pH(n)), can be elevated by diluting the urine and by increasing its citrate content. The aim of this study was to examine whether manipulation of pH(n) in these ways m

Effect of triclosan on the development of bacterial biofilms by urinary tract pathogens on urinary catheters.

OBJECTIVES: To examine (i) the effect of triclosan on the formation of catheter biofilms by urinary tract pathogens and (ii) the diffusion of triclosan through the retention balloons of urinary catheters. METHODS: Models of the catheterized bladder were infected with eight different urinary tract pathogens and the effect of triclosan on biofilm formation was assessed by determining the numbers of viable cells colonizing the catheters and by scanning electron microscopy. HPLC was used to determine the triclosan concentration in urine draining from models that had been fitted with triclosan-inf

Production of ammonium by Helicobacter pylori mediates occludin processing and disruption of tight junctions in Caco-2 cells.

Tight junctions, paracellular permeability barriers that define epithelial cell polarity, play an essential role in transepithelial transport, cell-cell adhesion and lymphocyte transmigration. They are also important for the maintenance of innate immune defence and intestinal antigen uptake. Ammonium (NH4+) is elevated in the gastric aspirates of Helicobacter pylori-infected patients and has been implicated in the disruption of tight-junction functional integrity and the induction of gastric mucosal damage during H. pylori infection. The precise mechanism of the effect of ammonium and the mole

Virulence insights from the Paracoccidioides brasiliensis transcriptome.

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the etiologic agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, is a dimorphic fungus, which is found as mycelia at 22-26 degrees C and as yeasts at 37 degrees C. A remarkable feature common to several pathogenic fungi is their ability to differentiate from mycelium to yeast morphologies, or vice-versa. Although P. brasiliensis is a recognized pathogen for humans, little is known about its virulence genes. In this sense, we performed a search for putative virulence genes in the P. brasiliensis transcriptome. BLAST comparative analyses were done among P. brasilienses assembled exp

Recent success of pantoprazole -or lansoprazole- based clarithromycin plus amoxicillin treatment in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There are some reports showing that resistance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) to clarithromycin has increased in recent years. We aimed to investigate the current success of a most popular first-line eradication regimen by using two different proton pump inhibitors: lansoprazole and pantoprazole. METHODS: Ninety patients with H. pylori-positive functional dyspepsia were randomized to receive pantoprazole 40 mg b.i.d. or lansoprazole 30 mg b.i.d. in addition to amoxicillin 1,000 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily for 14 days in a multicenter study.
