Is legislation effective in reducing risks of all-terrain vehicle-related injuries? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Over decades, governments have enacted policies and legislation mandating strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries. We performed a systematic review to determine the efficacy of laws and policies in reducing these injuries. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, 20 articles from the peer-reviewed literature were systematically selected. Associations between legislation/policy and changes or differences in injury numbers, rates or severity were queried. RESULTS: Data wer

Cannon Street rail disaster--lessons to be learned.

We studied the types and mechanisms of injury suffered by passengers involved in the Cannon Street rail crash, by a telephone and postal survey of all passengers attending St Bartholomew's Hospital for treatment of their injuries, and retrospective examination of their hospital records. There were 104 patients of whom 91 had complete data sets. Of the 91 patients included in the study, 63 (69 per cent) had suffered craniofacial trauma. Of the 63 patients with this type of injury, 50 had been standing at the time of impact and 48 of these were able to say exactly how they had sustained their in

[Work-related injuries in the maxillofacial region].

A retrospective study covering a period of 3.5 years was undertaken to determine the incidence of work-related injuries in the maxillofacial region. A group of 2,383 patients treated at our institution with maxillofacial trauma of various causes was evaluated. Work-related maxillofacial injuries in this population ranked fourth in frequency of occurrence after traffic accidents, falls, and acts of violence. Hand tools were found to be the culprit of most of the injuries in the maxillofacial region. The majority of the fractures of the facial skeleton were comminuted and/or compound and mostly

Exploring the association between a periodic safe-ride program and urban alcohol-impaired driving crashes in Quebec, Canada: a cross-sectional time-series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In Canada, alcohol-impaired driving is a persistent public health concern in need of effective community-based prevention strategies. This study examined the association between the number of rides offered by a safe-ride program in the province of Quebec every December and alcohol-related injury crashes during the 2000-2019 period. METHOD: Safe-ride programs in four cities were examined (Montreal, Quebec, Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières) using an ecological approach. The data set was structured as a balanced cross-sectional time series. Random-effects negative binomial regression

Human error in motorcycle crashes: A methodology based on in-depth data to identify the skills needed and support training interventions for safe riding.

OBJECTIVE: Human error by either rider or other vehicle driver is the primary contributing factor in crashes involving powered-two-wheelers. A human-factor-based crash analysis methodology is key to enhancing the road safety effectiveness of rider training interventions. Our aim is to define a methodology that uses in-depth data to identify the skills needed by riders in the highest risk crash configurations to reduce casualty rates. METHODS: The methodology is illustrated through a case study using in-depth data of 803 powered-two-wheeler crashes. Seven types of high-risk crash configuration

Evaluation of the crash mitigation effect of low-speed automated emergency braking systems based on insurance claims data.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the crash mitigation performance of low-speed automated emergency braking collision avoidance technologies by examining crash rates, car damage, and personal injuries. METHOD: Insurance claims data were used to identify rear-end frontal collisions, the specific situations where the low-speed automated emergency braking system intervenes. We compared cars of the same model (Volvo V70) with and without the low-speed automated emergency braking system (AEB and no AEB, respectively). Distributions of spare parts required for car repair were

Exploring motorcycle red-light violation in response to pedestrian green signal countdown device.

Literature has suggested that angle/rear-end collisions would arise from the reality that motorists and motorcyclists tended to accelerate aggressively in response to the remaining seconds of green signal countdown device (GSCD). One safety concern, while GSCD has gradually been removed for safety in Taiwan, is pedestrian green signal countdown device (PGSCD) that is used by approaching motorists and motorcyclists that may adopt the information to travel aggressively - an unintended consequence that is detrimental to safety. Research has reported that there appeared no negative effect of PGSCD

Is it time to advocate for a vulnerable road user protection law in New Zealand?

After a spate of recent New Zealand cyclist deaths, cycle advocates and several policy makers have been pondering the issue of increased penalties aimed at drivers deemed at fault. A key question is whether vulnerable road users (VRUs), including pedestrians, workers, animal riders, stranded motorists, skateboarders, cyclists, and others, are likely to be protected through enhanced penalties for at fault drivers of motor vehicles. We explored current policy and the international literature to examine whether or not enhanced penalties would be likely to increase motor vehicle driver motivation

[All-terrain vehicle accidents].

All-terrain vehicles (ATV) are designed for off-the-road occupational or recreational use. As their popularity has been increasing steadily, information has been accumulating on the morbidity and mortality associated with their use. The attributes of the ATV that make it attractive for recreation and sport are the reasons for much of its danger. Thus, horsepower, speed and ability to travel on rough and uncertain terrain are causal factors for accidents. The poor judgment and risk-taking of many of the young and immature drivers contribute to the great danger. 61 admissions due to ATV accident

Typical accidents encountered by assembly workers: six scenarios for safety planning identified using multivariate methods.

This study highlights the most typical accidents encountered by assembly workers employed in a variety of different workshops at a large automobile and truck factory in Sweden. Following site visits and the collection of data from accident registers, statistics on 28 accident characteristics were compiled on the basis of the 145 accidents involving assemblers in 1986 and 1987. For data treatment, two statistical methods complemented one another: the factorial analysis of correspondence (FAC) and the hierarchical ascendant classification (HAC). Six typical accident profiles were extensively por

[Heart and brain: are the risk factors the same? Are the results of primary and secondary trials comparable?].

The aim of this study was to identify the similitudes and the differences in the epidemiology and prevention of myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular accidents by analysis of trials of primary and secondary prevention of myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular accidents. The principal risk factors common to both pathologies are hypertension, smoking and increased LDL-cholesterol. However, the statistical significance with respect to causality differs from one pathology to the other. Similarly, the impact of preventive measures is not the same: the treatment of hypertension is more import

The community safety approach in Falun, Sweden--is it possible to characterise the most effective prevention endeavours and how long-lasting are the results?

The safe community concept was put into practice in order to reduce the number of unintentional injuries occurring in the Falun municipality. A community-based injury prevention programme was initiated in 1989 and has been gradually built up since that time. The prevention endeavours were based primarily on active intervention strategies through the provision of information, supervision, education and training. After 5 years of an active intervention programme, a significant effect was found as regards the injury rates for both outpatients as well as patients discharged from hospitals. The obj

Disposable plastic diapers: a foreign body hazard.

Foreign body ingestion and aspiration in children has been a serious problem, occasionally resulting in airway obstruction and death. Airway obstruction by balloons and subsequent asphyxiation is well documented. Respiratory blockage by plastic dry-cleaning sacks has resulted in warning labels on most such materials. Two recent cases of nasal aspiration of plastic coating from a commonly used disposable diaper are compared to reports of similar occurrences documented by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. On the basis of these reports we recommend that disposable diapers be continuous

In-depth investigation of escalator riding accidents in heavy capacity MRT stations.

In 2000, the accident rate for escalator riding was about 0.815 accidents per million passenger trips through Taipei Metro Rapid Transit (MRT) heavy capacity stations. In order to reduce the probability and severity of escalator riding accidents and enhance the safety of passengers, the Drury and Brill model [Drury, C.G., Brill, M., 1983. Human factors in consumer product accident investigation. Hum. Factors 25 (3), 329-342] for in-depth investigation was adopted to analyze the 194 escalator riding accidents in terms of victim, task, product and environment. Prevention measures have been devel

An unusual mechanism of burn injury due to flaming drinks.

Bars and cocktail lounges serve various forms of flaming drinks, usually made with very high-proof alcohol. The drinks are lit and then served. If additional alcohol from the bottle is added to a still-burning drink, flames may spread up the stream of alcohol into the bottle and cause a flash of flame out the bottle's neck. Injuries can require grafting. Three cases are reported. A 32-year-old white female sustained burns covering 10 per cent of her body surface, including the face. Surgery with split-thickness grafts were required. Pressure garments were prescribed for 6 months. A 34-year-old
