Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, a gram-negative bacterium ubiquitous in soil, water and sewage, is a rare cause of endocarditis in children. The first case of Acinetobacter endocarditis in an infant is described. This patient had underlying tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve. A review of the literature in English revealed only four other cases of Acinetobacter endocarditis in children; three of whom had underlying congenital heart disease. Like the other reported cases, this patient responded well to antibiotic treatment. Subsequently this patient underwent corrective cardiac surgery

A hospital outbreak of Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus in a ward with patients with intravenous tokolysis is reported. Within 2 months 9 pregnant women who had tokolysis for premature labour developed septic fever that only subsisted after the administration of tokolysis was stopped. In 7 cases blood culture was positive for Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus. This endemic outbreak was responsible for premature deliveries in four cases, leading top post partum death of two infants. Source identification was inconclusive, no further outbreaks have occurred since the reported endemic occurrence. Dangers of

Gram-negative bacteria produce nonulosonic acids, a family of nine-carbon sugars that mimic host sialic acids and may contribute to bacterial virulence. The nonulosonic acid C8-epimeric 5,7-di-N-acetyllegionaminic acid (8-epi-Leg5,7Ac2) is a component of the K-locus 49 (KL49) capsule of hypervirulent Acinetobacter baumannii, and its epimerization is proposed to be mediated by ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. We identified a KL49 strain that induces lethal sepsis in mice and found deletion of elaA, elaB, or elaC abolished lethality and markedly reduced capsule production. Crystal structures of ElaB, ElaA,

BACKGROUND: Recurrent Acinetobacter infections (AIs) pose significant treatment challenges and contribute to an increased healthcare burden. Limited data exist on recurrent infections in pediatric patients, making it essential to better define their clinical and microbiological characteristics to guide effective management strategies.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients 0-18 years of age hospitalized between 2019 and 2024 with confirmed AI. Recurrent infection was defined as a new episode occurring within 90 days after clinical recovery and documented negative cultures. Clinical, mi

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is a rare but potentially fatal cause of post-neurosurgical meningitis, primarily due to its broad antimicrobial resistance and limited therapeutic options. We report the case of an eight-year-old girl who developed CRAB meningitis following ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery. The organism was identified using standard biochemical methods and confirmed with an automated system (VITEK 2 Compact, BioMérieux SA, Marcy-l'Étoile, France). Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed resistance to carbapenems and susceptibility only to colistin. The

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is associated with both hospital-acquired infections (HAP) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In this study, we present a novel CAP-associated A. baumannii (CAP-AB) strain causing severe pneumonia in an afore healthy male patient without underlying conditions. Subsequently, we investigated the pathogenicity and immunogenicity of this CAP-AB strain using a mice pneumonia model.
RESULTS: A 58-year-old male patient with no underlying conditions experienced worsening symptoms of a productive cough, sputum, and fever that developed acutely, i

Bacterial cells tightly regulate the intracellular concentrations of essential transition metal ions by deploying a panel of metal-regulated transcriptional repressors and activators that bind to operator-promoter regions upstream of regulated genes. Like other zinc uptake regulator (Zur) proteins, Acinetobacter baumannii Zur represses transcription of its regulon when ZnII is replete and binds more weakly to DNA when ZnII is limiting. Previous studies established that Zur proteins are homodimeric and harbor at least two metal sites per protomer or four per dimer. CdII X-ray absorption spectro

Background/Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii is a globally emerging pathogen with widespread antimicrobial resistance driven by multiple mechanisms, such as altered expression of efflux pumps like AdeABC, placing it as a priority for research. Driven by the lack of new treatments, alternative approaches are being explored to combat its infections, among which efficacy-enhancing adjuvants can be found. This study presents and characterizes MV6, a synthetic cyclic peptide that boosts aminoglycoside efficacy. Methods: MV6's activity was assessed through antimicrobial susceptibility testing in c

We demonstrate the first reported case of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis with Acinetobacter pittii. Although previous reports have reported the uncommon similar infection in the larger Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-baumannii complex group of organisms, none have particularly focused on A pittii. Furthermore, we present a case of a young man with end-stage renal disease on PD who had a severe infection with A pittii. Although the organism was sensitive to ceftazidime, and despite a 4-week extended course of intraperitoneal antibiotics, the patient had a worsening infection leading t

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is one of the most common bacteria in nosocomial infections. Inappropriate usage of antibiotics has led to expanding emergence resistance to A. baumannii as a multidrug-resistant (MDR) strain. Empirical antibiotic therapy is necessary to evaluate the resistant gene pattern of MDR A. baumannii. For this purpose, the present study evaluated the resistance genes pattern of MDR A. baumannii collected from hospitalized patients using a genotypic diagnostic technique. To find evidence related to the study objectives, databases were searched such as Google Schol

Malignant otitis externa is an infection of the skin and soft tissue of the ear canal, spreading to the nearby structures. It causes severe otalgia and otorrhea, and can lead to ominous consequences such as cranial nerve damage and meningitis. The main etiologic agent is Pseudomonas aeruginosa and treatment relies on broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics. We report a rare case of a woman suffering from Malignant otitis externa caused by Acinetobacter baumannii and requiring the use of colistin.
