Five-year review of infections in a burn intensive care unit: High incidence of Acinetobacter baumannii in a tropical climate.

A 5-year review of nosocomial infections, bacteraemia and wound colonization in patients admitted to a burn intensive care unit from June 2001 to May 2006 was carried out. All patients required intubation at some point, and ICU support. Data on bacterial and fungal isolates were entered prospectively into a hospital-wide computerized database. Nosocomial infections (NIs) were defined using standard CDC criteria. Seventy-six patients were admitted during the study period, with 57 qualifying for analysis. Forty-two patients (74%) developed 137 NIs, with 240 NIs/100 admissions. The most common NI

Investigating the prevalence of class 1, 2, and 3 integrons in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from burn wound infections.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a significant antibiotic-resistant pathogen with high morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, especially in burn units. Acquiring mobile genetic elements, such as integrons, is significant in developing multidrug-resistant (MDR) hospital isolates. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of class 1, 2, and 3 integrons in A. baumannii. The clinical isolates were collected from burned patients with wound infections. The isolates were identified using standard biochemical and microbiological tests and were confirmed by detecting the blaoxa-51 ge

Prevalence and risk factors associated with infections linked to carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter species circulating in the city of Yaoundé, Cameroon.

OBJECTIVES: Carbapenems are critical antibiotics used against multidrug-resistant infections, yet resistance is increasing, especially among Gram-negative bacteria like Acinetobacter species. In Cameroon, while Acinetobacter baumannii is well studied, little is known about other species such as Acinetobacter pittii, Acinetobacter nosocomialis, and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. This study assessed the prevalence of carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter and associated risk factors in Yaoundé hospitals. METHODS: A 6-month prospective cross-sectional study (April-September 2024) was conducted usin

Genomic Characterization of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (OXA-23) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-2) Causing Hospital-Acquired Infections in Dogs.

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global health threat. Among the most problematic pathogens are carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae, which are significant causes of mortality in humans, particularly in the context of nosocomial infections. In companion animals, these bacteria have been reported mainly as colonizers of healthy animals or, less frequently, in community-acquired infections. However, no confirmed cases of healthcare-associated infections caused by these species have been documented in this population. This study reports

A Retrospective Case-Control Study of Eravacycline for the Treatment of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter Infections in Patients With Burn Injuries.

Thermal injuries lead to a deficiency in one's natural, protective barrier, resulting in increased susceptibility to pathogens, and often require multiple courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Eravacycline (ERA) has shown adequate in vitro activity against multiple multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens including Acinetobacter sp. Due to the increasing prevalence of MDR bacteria and the heightened susceptibility of patients with burns to infection, studies are needed to examine the clinical effect of eravacycline in this population. The objective of this retrospective, case-control study was to
