Third-window vibroplasty with an active middle ear implant: assessment of physiologic responses in a model of stapes fixation in Chinchilla lanigera.

HYPOTHESIS: Mechanical stimulation through a cochlear third window into the scala tympani in a chinchilla model with normal and fixed stapes can generate cochlear responses equivalent to acoustic stimuli. BACKGROUND: Cochlear stimulation via the round window (RW) using active middle ear implants (AMEIs) can produce physiologic responses similar to acoustic stimulation including in a model of stapes fixation. However, pathologic conditions, such as advanced otosclerosis, can preclude delivery of sound energy to the cochlea through the oval window and/or the RW. METHODS: Cochlear microphonic (

Impact of personality on acoustic tinnitus suppression and emotional reaction to stimuli sounds.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic stimulation was shown to be effective in short-term suppression of tinnitus. However, tinnitus cannot be suppressed in all patients. Recent insights from mental health research suggests that personality traits may be important factors in prediction of treatment outcomes or improvement of tinnitus over time. No previous acoustic stimulation study investigated the effects of personality traits on tinnitus suppression and rating of sound stimuli. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was therefore to examine whether personality is capable to predict tinnitus suppression in chron

[A model for the study of the ototoxic effects of drugs in an experiment].

The authors compared sensitivity of the acoustic analyzer elements to ototoxic drugs in cat experiments. The model proposed assesses primary responses of the brain cortical acoustic zone (BCAZ) to sound stimulation. The drugs effect on the analyzer's periphery was determined from changes in bioelectric responses of the cochlea to sound stimulation (microphone potential, potential of the acoustic nerve action). The arguments are presented for feasibility of using primary BCAZ responses evoked by electric stimulation of thalamocortical radiation fibers coming from the medial geniculate body for

[The use of short-latency auditory evoked potentials in the diagnosis of acoustic neurinomas].

The short-latent acoustic evoked potentials in patients with unilateral neurosensory hypoacusis due to the tumor of the acoustic nerve or other etiology were recorded. It was found that the patients had no potential in the diseased area in monaural sound stimulation, but binaural sound stimulation enabled these potentials to be recorded. With this, the short-latent acoustic evoked potentials in patients with verified neurinoma showed a reduction in the third wave to the point of its disappearance. Those in patients whose neurosensory hypoacusis were unassociated with the development of neoplas

Acoustic responses of vestibular afferents in a model of superior canal dehiscence.

HYPOTHESIS: Afferents innervating the superior semicircular canal are rendered especially sensitive to acoustic stimulation when there is a dehiscence of the superior canal. Other vestibular end organs are also more sensitive to acoustic stimulation. BACKGROUND: Dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal is associated with vertigo and nystagmus caused by loud sounds (Tullio phenomenon) or changes in middle ear or intracranial pressures. The mechanisms by which acoustic stimuli act on the vestibular end organs are unclear. The nystagmus caused by acoustic stimuli generally aligns with the a

Effect of stimulus duration on stapedius reflex threshold in electrical stimulation via cochlear implant.

The effect of stimulus duration on the threshold of the contralateral stapedius reflex was investigated in patients supplied with a Vienna cochlear implant (analog stimulation via CI) and compared to results of a normal-hearing reference group in case of acoustic stimulation. Changes in reflex threshold were determined at four frequencies (125, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz in case of electrostimulation and at 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 Hz for acoustic stimulation) and for five durations (30, 50, 100, 300 and 500 ms). The comparison of the two stimulation modes was accomplished by using the same in

Neurophysiological correlates of residual inhibition in tinnitus: Hints for trait-like EEG power spectra.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate oscillatory brain activity changes following acoustic stimulation in tinnitus and whether these changes are associated with behavioral measures of tinnitus loudness. Moreover, differences in ongoing brain activity between individuals with and without residual inhibition (RI) are examined (responders vs. non-responders). METHODS: Three different types of noise stimuli were administered for acoustic stimulation in 45 tinnitus patients. Subjects resting state brain activity was recorded before and after stimulation via EEG alongside with subjective measurements of tinni

Long-term effects of intracochlear electrical stimulation with looped patterns on tinnitus: A case study.

Electrical stimulation by cochlear implant (CI) has been proven to be a viable treatment option for tinnitus in many recent studies. In addition, intracochlear electrical stimulation independent of an acoustic input appears to suppress tinnitus, at least in the short term. We conducted a case study to investigate the long-term effects of both standard CI and intracochlear electrical stimulation independent of an acoustic input on tinnitus in a patient with single-sided deafness and tinnitus. We found no negative effects of intracochlear electrical stimulation independent of an acoustic input o

Acoustically and electrically evoked contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions in guinea pigs.

It is generally accepted that stimulation of the efferent auditory system results in changes of cochlear activity. A simple method of activating the olivocochlear pathway by contralateral electrical stimulation of the round window (ES-RW) was used in this study with the aim of comparing the efficacy of acoustically and/or electrically evoked contralateral suppression. The suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) was elicited by contralateral acoustic stimulation (AS) (61 dB SPL continuous white noise), and/or by electr

Vestibular myogenic potentials evoked by air-conducted stimuli at safe acoustic intensity levels retain optimal diagnostic properties for superior canal dehiscence syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is commonly conducted with air-conducted (AC) stimuli whose intensity may exceed the prudential levels of acoustic exposure in susceptible subjects. OBJECTIVES: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of AC VEMP for superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) at lowered acoustic stimulation levels. MATERIAL AND METHODS: VEMP was tested in 10 SCDS patients and in 10 age/sex matched control subjects. VEMP were recorded on cervical muscles (cVEMP) and extraocular muscles (oVEMP) in response to short AC tone bursts at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz deliv

Contralateral acoustic suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions--activation of the medial olivocochlear system.

Medial olivocochlear pathway represents the final part of efferent acoustic pathway which comes from the superior olivary complex ending at outer hair cells. Activation of medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) alters the cochlear output decreasing the travelling wave within cochlea. Stimulation of MOCS provides protection against moderate levels of noise, encoding noise signals as well as selecting hearing attention. Activation of MOCS can be performed using contralateral acoustic stimulation. The principal result of presentation of contralateral acoustic stimulation during screening of transient

An acoustic bellows-type round window transducer for middle-ear implants.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the development of output devices for round window middle-ear. To overcome the problems of output devices that apply sound pressure directly to the round window, an acoustic bellows-type round window transducer was implemented by combining a small bellows, acoustic tube, and balanced armature driver. METHODS: The output characteristics of the proposed acoustic bellows-type round window transducer were confirmed through bench tests and distortion measurements. To compare the vibration transmission characteristics of the proposed transducer with those of sound p

Spinal vs. supraspinal sites of action of the alpha 2-adrenergic agonists clonidine and ST-91 on the acoustic startle reflex.

Previous work has shown that stimulation of alpha 2-adrenergic receptors depresses the startle responses in rats. The present study suggests that this depressant effect involves supraspinal rather than spinal alpha 2-adrenergic receptors because intraventricular but not intrathecal infusion of the hydrophilic alpha 2-adrenergic agonist ST-91 depressed the acoustic startle reflex. To determine the point in the acoustic startle pathway where alpha 2-adrenergic receptor activation might ultimately alter neural transmission, startle responses were elicited electrically from different points along

[Electric stimulation of auditory nerve fibers. Experimental study].

The authors tested in animal experiments the effectiveness of electrical stimulation of acoustic nerve fibres. To guinea pigs platinum-iridium electrodes were implanted in the round window of the cochlea. The receptors of the inner ear were functionally eliminated by the local application of the ototoxic antibiotic gentamicin. Cortical responses produced by electric stimulation of the contralateral ear and acoustic stimulation of the ipsilateral intact ear were recorded. The threshold for producing a cortical response by the electric stimulus was lowest at the frequency of 0.5 kHz and rose wit

Non-invasive stimulation of the auditory feedback area for improved articulation in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Hypokinetic dysarthria (HD) is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) which does not respond well to PD treatments. We investigated acute effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the motor and auditory feedback area on HD in PD using acoustic analysis of speech. METHODS: We used 10 Hz and 1 Hz stimulation protocols and applied rTMS over the left orofacial primary motor area, the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), and over the vertex (a control stimulation site) in 16 PD patients with HD. A cross-over design was used. Stimulation sites and protoco

Nonacoustic stimulation of the middle ear muscle reflex.

The purpose of these experiments was to determine the incidence of the middle ear reflex in response to several nonacoustic (tactile and air jet) stimuli among subjects with normal hearing who had an acoustic reflex and selected patients with severe hearing loss. The results demonstrate that the incidence of response to tactile stimulation increases as the facial area stimulated approaches the auricle. The response to an air jet stimulus directed toward the eye is high; however, the clinical utility of the air jet may be limited because it often results in a startle reaction and head movement,

Effects of Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound on the Gut-Brain Axis.

The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication network involved in inflammatory, metabolic, and neurobehavioural homeostasis. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a non-invasive biophysical modality that may influence this axis through acoustic mechanotransduction and downstream changes in inflammatory signalling, epithelial barrier function, microbial ecology, and neuroimmune activity. This mini review synthesizes predominantly preclinical evidence on abdominal and brain-directed LIPUS. Current rodent studies indicate that abdominal stimulation can produce coordinated intestinal, s

Functional characteristics of cochlear nucleus in behaving cat examined by acoustic masking of electrical stimuli.

1. Cats were trained, using an operant procedure, to detect and respond to electrical stimulation delivered in the vicinity of the cochlear nucleus. The electrical stimuli were presented both in silence and in synchrony with repeated noise bursts to determine whether detection thresholds for the electrical stimuli were elevated by the acoustic masking noise. 2. For stimulation sites centered within auditory structures (cochlear nucleus or acoustic nerve root), the acoustic maskers caused a consistent elevation of the electrical detection thresholds. For stimulation sites that were in or border

A novel mechanism of cochlear excitation during simultaneous stimulation and pressure relief through the round window.

The round window (RW) membrane provides pressure relief when the cochlea is excited by sound. Here, we report measurements of cochlear function from guinea pigs when the cochlea was stimulated at acoustic frequencies by movements of a miniature magnet which partially occluded the RW. Maximum cochlear sensitivity, corresponding to subnanometre magnet displacements at neural thresholds, was observed for frequencies around 20 kHz, which is similar to that for acoustic stimulation. Neural response latencies to acoustic and RW stimulation were similar and taken to indicate that both means of stimul

Sonovestibular symptoms evaluated by computed dynamic posturography.

The investigation of stability under bilateral acoustic stimulation was undertaken in an attempt to mimic the real-life conditions of noisy environment (e.g., industry, aviation). The Tullio phenomenon evaluated by computed dynamic posturography (CDP) under acoustic stimulation is reflected in postural unsteadiness, rather than in the classic nystagmus. With such a method, the dangerous effects of noise-induced instability can be assessed and prevented. Three groups of subjects were submitted. The first (group A) included 20 patients who complained of sonovestibular symptoms (i.e., Tullio phen
