Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome should be suspected in sexually active young women presenting with acute right upper quadrant pain even in the absence of lower abdominal pain. The risk of radiation exposure associated with computed tomography should also be considered while making a diagnosis of abdominal pain in young patients.

Tension of the median nerve produced by simultaneous extension of the supinated wrist and distal interphalangeal joint of the index finger was noted to result in proximal volar forearm pain radiation in patients with chronic carpal tunnel syndrome. This sign was less frequent in patients with a more acute syndrome. Adhesions between the median nerve and the overlying transverse carpal ligament and the development of a pseudoneuroma can individually or together occur in the chronic carpal tunnel syndrome limiting distal nerve excursion of the tethered nerve during simultaneous wrist and index f

PURPOSE: Owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, radiation oncology departments have adopted various strategies to deliver radiation therapy safely and efficiently while minimizing the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 transmission among patients and health care providers. One practical strategy is to deliver stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in a single fraction, which has been well established for treating bone metastases, although it has been infrequently used for other extracranial sites.

The different types of biological effects produced by ionizing radiations are reviewed. Among the early effects following an acute exposure, the bone marrow syndrome and the intestinal syndrome are briefly described. They are unlikely to appear in the current conditions encountered in dental radiology. As far as skin exposure is concerned (e.g. fingers, hands), acute reactions (moist desquamation, ulceration, etc.) require high doses which are encountered only in accidental conditions. However, chronic dermatitis after repeated low dose exposure is one of the major risks in dental radiology (e

Leukemia is caused by an abnormal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. The four general subtypes are acute lymphoblastic, acute myelogenous, chronic lymphocytic, and chronic myelogenous. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia primarily occurs in children, whereas the other subtypes are more common in adults. Risk factors include certain chemical and ionizing radiation exposures and genetic disorders. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, weight loss, joint pain, and easy bruising or bleeding. Diagnosis is confirmed with bone marrow biopsy or peripheral blood smear. Hematology-

There are currently four radiation medical countermeasures that have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to mitigate hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome, all of which are repurposed radiomitigators. The evaluation of additional candidate drugs that may also be helpful for use during a radiological/nuclear emergency is ongoing. A chlorobenzyl sulfone derivative (organosulfur compound) known as Ex-Rad, or ON01210, is one such candidate medical countermeasure, being a novel, small-molecule kinase inhibitor that has demonstrated efficacy in the murine model. In this

Ionising radiation exposure can lead to acute haematopoietic radiation syndrome. Despite significant advancements in the field of radioprotection, no drugs with high efficacy and low toxicity have yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. FG-4592, as a proline hydroxylase inhibitor, may play an important role in radioprotection of the haematopoietic system. Mice were peritoneal injected with FG-4592 or normal saline. After irradiation, the survival time, body weight, peripheral blood cell and bone marrow cell (BMC) count, cell apoptosis, pathology were analysed and RNA-sequence te

PURPOSE: After radiation therapy (RT), various radiation-induced toxicities can develop in about one-fourth of patients. An international interest in using morbidity and mortality rates to monitor the quality of care and integrate morbidity and mortality review (MMR) meetings into organizations' governance processes has arisen. We report the first results of patients included in our MMR procedure that included biological assays for individual intrinsic radiosensitivity (IIRS).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-three patients were prospectively included in the MMR database. Twenty-two were evaluab

Acute type B aortic dissection is sometimes complicated by acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Herein, we describe our experience in a rare acute type B aortic dissection-associated respiratory failure case culminating in acute respiratory distress syndrome. The patient was a 45-year-old man admitted with a complaint of sudden chest pain radiating to his back. On computed tomography, an acute type B aortic dissection was diagnosed. He had no dyspnea on admission, but his respiratory function subsequently deteriorated, and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome was d

UNLABELLED: Temporal Modulation of Acute Radiation Injury by Post-Exposure PARP-1 versus ATR Kinase Inhibition.
BACKGROUND: PARP-1 and ATR inhibitors have been employed as radiosensitizers in cancer therapy. In addition to this, there is little evidence about the role of these chemicals after a dose of radiation, specifically in relation to reducing damage to healthy cells rather than increasing it.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine if PARP-1 or ATR kinase inhibitors, when delayed administered, could decrease the severity of the condition caused by an acute dose of radiation

CONTEXT: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), characterized by predisposition to early onset of a variety of malignancies, is usually associated with germline mutation of the tumor-suppressor gene, TP53. Mutation carriers are at increased risk of multiple primary tumors, many of which arise in previous radiation-therapy sites. In patients with LFS, acute myeloid leukemia is uncommon and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is rare.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the morphologic, cytogenetic, and molecular diagnostic findings of 3 unique cases of MDS arising in patients with germline TP53 mutation, 2 with classic LF

Two siblings with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) 1B due to a c.517G>C (p.Gly173Arg) mutation in the MPZ gene both developed an acute cauda syndrome with unbearable back pain radiating to both legs, progressive muscle weakness of the legs, and saddle hypesthesia with fecal and urinary incontinence. MRI showed in both patients a lumbar spinal canal totally filled with hypertrophic caudal nerve roots. We performed acute decompression. Postoperatively, in both patients, the back pain resolved immediately, there was a significant improvement of both the paresis of the legs and the hypesthesia, and there

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (BM-MSCs) are important components of bone marrow, possessing multipotent differentiation potential and the ability to support hematopoiesis. Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) induces cellular damage in BM-MSCs, such as DNA lesions and mitochondrial dysfunction. Despite their relative radioresistance, most surviving BM-MSCs enter senescence post-irradiation. This senescent state disrupts the bone marrow niche, impairs stem cell proliferation and differentiation, and contributes to acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and myelosuppression. To clarify the i

Ionizing radiation induces injury in multiple organs, particularly in the hematopoietic system; however, the implementation of effective preventive measures for hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS) is still limited. In this study, we investigated the radioprotective effects of a natural diterpenoid, eriocalyxin B (EriB), on hematopoietic injury associated with ARS in mice exposed to total body irradiation (TBI). The results suggested that EriB effectively provides radioprotection against hematopoietic injury, as evidenced by improved survival, increased peripheral blood recovery, and

Catheter-directed thrombolysis for iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis (DVT) aims to reduce acute leg symptoms and to prevent the post-thrombotic syndrome. There are no data from controlled trials in pregnant patients. Reports of thrombolysis for treatment of DVT during pregnancy are scarce. Pregnancy is considered a relative contraindication to thrombolytic therapy because of the risk of bleeding and concerns about the effects of radiation exposure on the fetus. We report on a catheter-directed thrombolysis procedure without radiation and contrast medium exposure in a first-trimester pregnant

Brachial plexus traction injuries most frequently occur following acute flexion or extension of the neck. The symptomatology following this injury may be defined clearly into the anatomic patterns of upper trunk, lower trunk, posterior cord, medial cord, and lateral cord radiations. This injury is the most common cause of the neurogenic form of thoracic outlet syndrome and is frequently seen in conjunction with cervical spine disease as well as peripheral entrapment syndromes of the ulnar, radial, and medial nerves.

Myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myelogenous leukemia secondary to radiotherapy, radiation exposure, and chemotherapy is a well-documented malignant stem cell disorder. The incidence and natural course of myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myelogenous leukemia after organ transplantation remains less thoroughly investigated. In our institution, 631 heart transplantations have been performed between 1983 and 1998. We report five patients (age, 22-63 years) with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) (n=1) or acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) (n=4) occuring 4-8 years after transplantation. Immunosuppre

Accidental exposure to ionizing radiation may lead to delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) in many organ systems. Activated protein C (APC) is a known mitigator of the acute radiation syndrome. To examine the role of APC in DEARE, we used a transgenic mouse model with 2- to 3-fold increased plasma levels of APC (high in APC, APCHi). Male and female APCHi mice and wild-type littermates were exposed to 9.5 Gy γ-rays with their hind-legs (bone marrow) shielded from radiation to allow long-term survival. At 3 and 6 months after irradiation, cardiac function was measured with ultraso

Animal studies are needed that best simulate a large-scale, inhomogeneous body exposure after a radiological or nuclear incident and that provides a platform for future development of medical countermeasures. A partial-body irradiation (PBI) model using 137Cs gamma rays with hind limb (tibia) shielding was developed and assessed for the sequalae of radiation injuries to gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow (BM) and lung and among different genetic mouse strains (C57BL/6J, C57L/J, CBA/J and FVB/NJ). In this case, a marginal level of BM shielding (∼2%) provided adequate protection against lethali
