Transcriptomic analysis reveals physiological adaptations and immune system modulation in Romanian Holstein cattle during heat stress exposure.

Heat stress represents a significant impairment to productivity, health, and reproductive efficiency of dairy cattle globally. The present study aimed to investigate genes and molecular mechanisms involved in physiological response to heat stress in Romanian Holstein dairy cows, by conducting a whole-blood transcriptomic and bioinformatics analysis. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed on samples collected from seven multiparous Romanian Holstein cows under both heat stress (HS, average temperature-humidity index -THI of 77.5) and thermoneutral (TN, average THI of 48.3) conditions. A total o

Chinese Altay sheep adapt to seasonal fluctuations in forage nutrients by changing physiological status and rumen microbial community structure.

INTRODUCTION: As the primary nutritional source for grazing livestock, natural forage directly influences changes in physiological status and rumen microbial community structure owing to seasonal variations in its nutritional composition. However, the physiological and rumen microbial community adaptations of Chinese Altay sheep in response to seasonal variations in forage nutrition remain unclear. METHODS: Therefore, this study systematically evaluated the effects of seasonal dynamics in forage nutrition on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood parameters, rumen fermentation char

Morphological, physiological and metabolomic analysis to unravel the adaptive relationship between root growth of ephemeral plants and different soil habitats.

To gain insights into the adaptive characteristics of ephemeral plants and enrich their potential for resource exploitation, the adaptive changes in two highly dominant species (Malcolmia scorpioides and Isatis violascens) to soil habitats (aeolian soil, AS; grey desert soil, GS) were investigated from the aspects of root morphology, physiology, and metabolism in this study. The results revealed that changes in root morphology and enzyme activity were affected by soil habitat. Total root length (TRL), root volume (RV) and root surface area (RSA) were higher in GS than in AS. The levels of prol

Epilepsy Personal Assistant Device-A Mobile Platform for Brain State, Dense Behavioral and Physiology Tracking and Controlling Adaptive Stimulation.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, and it affects almost 1% of the population worldwide. Many people living with epilepsy continue to have seizures despite anti-epileptic medication therapy, surgical treatments, and neuromodulation therapy. The unpredictability of seizures is one of the most disabling aspects of epilepsy. Furthermore, epilepsy is associated with sleep, cognitive, and psychiatric comorbidities, which significantly impact the quality of life. Seizure predictions could potentially be used to adjust neuromodulation therapy to prevent the onset of a seizure

Integrated Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses Suggest Key Adaptive Mechanisms of European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) to Acute Heat Stress.

The European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is highly susceptible to heat stress, limiting its sustainable aquaculture. While single-organ thermal responses are partially understood, the systemic, multi-organ cooperative survival mechanisms under acute heat stress remain poorly characterized. To elucidate the underlying tolerance mechanisms and provide genetic markers for breeding, this study investigated the multi-organ responses of European perch (n = 90; body length: 13.15 ± 1.75 cm; body weight: 30.54 ± 7.17 g) transferred from 24 °C to an acute heat stress challenge (31 °C) at an increasing ra

Rescuing cognitive deficits in alcohol-dependent mice by targeting physiological adaptations in prefrontal cortex K V 7 channels.

Chronic alcohol misuse causes cognitive deficits and functional adaptations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) that facilitate excessive drinking and increase relapse probability during prolonged withdrawal. Positive K V 7 channel modulation reduces alcohol intake in high-drinking rodents, but the impact of alcohol dependence on cortical K V 7 physiology and its role in cognitive impairments are understudied. Here, we demonstrate spatial working memory deficits and physiological adaptations in intrinsic excitability and K V 7 channel function in intratelencephalic PFC projection neurons in alcohol

Physiological adaptations to 6 weeks of high-intensity interval and moderate-intensity continuous training in horses: A randomized crossover study.

This study tested the hypothesis that 6 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) would induce greater physiological adaptations than moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in Thoroughbred horses. Seven untrained horses completed two distance-matched treadmill training protocols (three sessions per week) in a randomized crossover design, separated by a three-month washout: MICT (6 min at 70% V ̇ O 2 max $$ \dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_{2\max } $$ ) and HIIT (6 × [30 s at 100% V ̇ O 2 max $$ \dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_{2\max } $$ with 30 s at 30% V ̇ O 2 max $$ \do

Assessing the physiology of weight loss based on real-time weight monitoring: The ADAPT behavioral weight loss study protocol.

Improving health outcomes via sustained weight loss and maintenance requires advancing understanding of the metabolic, appetitive, and neurological alterations that counteract-and eventually halt-weight loss. Prior studies have demonstrated increased appetite as well as metabolic adaptations, such as increased energy efficiency, in response to weight loss. However, previous study designs utilized experimentally determined weight loss plateaus and did not investigate spontaneously occurring plateaus nor study participants in their natural, free-living, environments during weight loss. The Asses

Behavioral and physiological responses of horses to ground-based adaptive horsemanship lessons for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Little literature exists on horses in adaptive horsemanship (AH) despite concerns about their well-being. The study objective was to evaluate behavioral and physiological responses of horses to ground-based AH lessons for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Lessons were expected to alter horses' hormone concentrations, behavior, and muscle activity. Geldings were assigned to AH (n=6; 20.3 ± 1.9 yrs., mean ± SE) or control (CON; stall in arena, n=6; 13.8 ± 1.7 yrs.) conditions for 8-week sessions based on current occupation (AH = equine-assisted services; CON = recreational rid

Long-Term Physiological Adaptations Induced by Short-Interval High-Intensity Exercises: An RCT Comparing Active and Passive Recovery.

Background: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the most debated methods involving several parameters that could be modulated, but the long-term adaptations it induces are still unclear. This investigation aimed to evaluate the efficacy of running and whole-body exercises with high-intensity (>80% heart rate) short intervals (30 s) in body composition and physical performance and compare the effects between groups with active (AR) or passive recovery (PR), both in males and females. Methods: Eighteen trained young adults (55.56% ♀) were randomly allocated to the PR (n = 9, 23.09

Physiological adaptations to chronic stress in healthy humans - why might the sexes have evolved different energy utilisation strategies?

KEY POINTS: The human stress response activates the autonomic nervous system and endocrine systems to increase performance during environmental challenges. This response is usually beneficial, improving the chance of overcoming environmental challenges, but costs resources such as energy. Humans and other animals are known to adapt their responses to acute stress when they are stimulated chronically, presumably to optimise resource utilisation. Characterisation of these adaptations has been limited. Using advanced imaging techniques, we show that cardiovascular and endocrine physiology, reflec

Effect of rate-adaptive pacing on performance and physiological parameters during activities of daily living in the elderly: results from the CLEAR (Cylos Responds with Physiologic Rate Changes during Daily Activities) study.

AIMS: For most elderly pacemaker patients, evaluation of rate-adaptive pacing using treadmill and bicycle tests is impractical and not representative of typical daily activities. This study was designed to compare the performance and physiological response of the closed-loop stimulation (CLS) rate-adaptive sensor to accelerometer (XL) and no rate sensor (DDD) during typical daily activity testing. METHODS AND RESULTS: Subjects recently implanted with a Cylos pacemaker completed timed activities of daily life testing, which included walking, sweeping, and standing from a seated position. Activ

Physiological and nutritional adaptation of broodmares during the transition from late pregnancy to early lactation: Digestibility changes and the role of uNDF as an internal marker.

Nutritional management of broodmares during late pregnancy and early lactation is essential for maternal health and foal well-being. This study evaluated a targeted dietary adaptation during the transition from late gestation to early lactation, monitored nutrient digestibility, and applied undigested neutral detergent fiber (uNDF) as an intrinsic digestibility marker. A prospective nutritional study was conducted on 11 clinically healthy Trotter broodmares (3 primiparous, 8 multiparous) monitored under standardized conditions. Mares received a forage-based diet with controlled starch intake a

A century of exercise physiology: concepts that ignited the study of human thermoregulation. Part 4: evolution, thermal adaptation and unsupported theories of thermoregulation.

This review is the final contribution to a four-part, historical series on human exercise physiology in thermally stressful conditions. The series opened with reminders of the principles governing heat exchange and an overview of our contemporary understanding of thermoregulation (Part 1). We then reviewed the development of physiological measurements (Part 2) used to reveal the autonomic processes at work during heat and cold stresses. Next, we re-examined thermal-stress tolerance and intolerance, and critiqued the indices of thermal stress and strain (Part 3). Herein, we describe the evoluti

Cysteine becomes conditionally essential during hypobaric hypoxia and regulates adaptive neuro-physiological responses through CBS/H2S pathway.

Brain is well known for its disproportionate oxygen consumption and high energy-budget for optimal functioning. The decrease in oxygen supply to brain, thus, necessitates rapid activation of adaptive pathways - the absence of which manifest into vivid pathological conditions. Amongst these, oxygen sensing in glio-vascular milieu and H2S-dependent compensatory increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF) is a major adaptive response. We had recently demonstrated that the levels of H2S were significantly decreased during chronic hypobaric hypoxia (HH)-induced neuro-pathological effects. The mechanistic

Physiological evaluation of the Calgary adapted aRm ergometer (CARE) concussion exertion test in adolescent athletes: A repeated-measures observational study.

Exertion testing helps inform exercise prescription during concussion recovery. The Calgary Adapted aRm Ergometer (CARE) test, developed as the first upper-body specific exertion test, aims to improve accessibility and inclusivity in concussion care. While initial development was conducted in adults, its applicability in adolescents remains unknown. This study compared physiological responses between the CARE test and the Calgary Concussion Cycle Test (CCCT) in non-disabled adolescent male and female athletes. Fifteen females and fifteen males (aged 14-17) performed CARE and CCCT to volitional
