What is the relationship between the size of the adenoids and nasal obstruction? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: adenoidectomy is one of the most common surgical procedure in pediatric otolaryngology practice. Clinical guidelines (such as the Spanish or American) suggest adenoidectomy when the enlargement of the adenoids is associated with nasal obstruction. Nasal endoscopy and cephalograms are adequate methods to estimate the size of the adenoids. However, they do not measure nasal patency. This systematic review is designed with the objective of exploring the relationship between adenoid size and nasal ventilation through rhinomanometry. REVIEW METHODS: 3 authors members of the YO-IFOS rhin

Differential changes in the adenoids and tonsils in Japanese children and teenagers: a cross-sectional study.

When adenoids (Ad) and tonsils (Tn) become hypertrophied, craniofacial and general body growth is affected. However, there are no objective explicit criteria for evaluating the size of the Ad and Tn, and their respective growth patterns remain unclear. This study determined the average proportions of the Ad and Tn sizes to the upper airway area at various developmental stages in Japanese individuals. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 300 Japanese children and teenagers (150 boys and 150 girls, aged 6-20 years), and the respective proportions of Ad to the nasopharynx (Ad/Np)

HHV-6 infection of tonsils and adenoids in children with hypertrophy and upper airway recurrent infections.

OBJECTIVE: Human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), the agent of a self-limiting exanthematic disease in childhood, persists in a silent state in the secondary lymphoid organs and the reactivation is characterized by HHV-6-induced inflammatory cytokines. This study investigates the possible etiological role of HHV-6 in children affected by tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy. METHODS: 55 tonsils, 80 adenoids fresh tissues and 74 blood samples were collected from 80 children (mean age 4.8 years, 43.5% female) undergoing elective tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy for tissue hypertrophy. Moreover, patients wit

The effect of hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils on the development of posterior crossbite and oral habits.

There are a number of studies in the literature, that associate nasopharyngeal airway obstruction, as a result of adenoid enlargement, to the development of skeletal and dental abnormalities. However, the etiologic role of hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils in developing an aberrant dentofacial growth is not clear, yet. The present investigation attempted to study the incidence of maxillary posterior crossbite and oral habits, in a sample of 120 children, that displayed hypertrophied adenoids with or without enlarged tonsils, and underwent adenoidectomy. An attempt was also made to relate the

Hypertrophic adenoids in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: appearance at magnetic resonance imaging before and after treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) sporadically develop abnormal adenoids. Nasopharyngeal adenoids are usually included in the gross tumor volume (GTV) but may have different therapeutic responses than tumor tissue. Therefore, distinguishing adenoids from tumor tissue may be required for precise and efficient chemoradiotherapy and radiotherapy. We characterized nasopharyngeal adenoids and investigated the therapeutic responses of NPC and nasopharyngeal adenoids using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: MRI data from 40 NPC patients with a coexisting adenoid mass

[Histopathological and immunological analysis of hyperplastic palatine tonsils and adenoids in children with coexisting atopic dermatitis].

Allergic sensitisation of the airways occurs in the mucosa of the shock organ, or in the lymphatic stations draining these structures. The lymphatic structure closest to the nasal mucosa in humans is the adenoid and tonsils. Research done in respect to Waldeyer's ring on people dealing at the same time with allergy, is seldom the subject of dissertation in polish as well as world wide medical literature. In the enclosed dissertation, writers present the results of histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of hyperplastic tonsils and adenoid, taken from children with coexisting atopy.

[The morphofunctional characteristics of the palatine and pharyngeal tonsils in children with chronic tonsillitis and adenoids].

22 palatine and 10 pharyngeal tonsils of 20 children, 4 to 15 years of age, with chronic tonsillitis and adenoids were studied histologically and immunohistochemically. The material was obtained at tonsillectomy, adenotomy and adenotonsillectomy. The expression of LCA, CD20, CD45 RO, CD45 RA, CD68 and HLA DR-antigen was determined immunohistochemically. Functional heterogeneity of the whole lymphoid population in the tonsil tissue is structured by dividing lymphoid tissue into T- and B-regions. However, this subdivision is relative. Interpenetration of T- and B-cells into structurally determin

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Breast: A Case Report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare subtype of invasive breast cancer, occurring in <0.1% of all malignant breast tumors. Though majority are triple-negative, ACC of the breast has good prognosis with a low incidence of regional and distant metastases. A 45-year-old premenopausal female presented with a 5-month history of a gradually enlarging mass on her left breast. After core needle biopsy and subsequent metastatic work-up, she underwent total mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Final histopathology showed adenoid cystic carcinoma, 2.1 cm in size and no lymph nodes positive for

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Lip: A Case Report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignancy arising from secretory glands. While most commonly involving the parotid and submandibular glands, it can arise from any of the minor salivary gland tissue in the upper aerodigestive tract. This report features a more uncommon presentation of ACC in a 69 y.o. gentleman with a mass in his upper lip. Initial CT scan with contrast was concerning for an invasive lesion which subsequently led to a guideline-driven workup including fine-needle aspiration that was concerning for suspected salivary gland malignancy, most likely ACC. Pre-treatmen

Deep Learning for Endoscopic Classification of Adenoid Hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopy is a convenient and widely used method to evaluate adenoid size, but the subjectivity of its image diagnosis can result in over- or underestimation. To create a new assessment strategy for adenoid hypertrophy, we developed a reliable method for automated classification using a deep learning algorithm with nasal endoscopic images. METHODS: Endoscopic images of adenoids were obtained from our institution and were divided into four grades based on choanal obstruction. The labeled images were randomly assigned to training and testing sets. The convolutional neural network (CN

The effect of adenoid hypertrophy duration on craniofacial development.

OBJECTIVE: Duration of disease plays an important role in the relationship of adenoid hypertrophy and craniofacial morphology. This study aimed to analyse the association of adenoid hypertrophy with craniofacial features in different duration groups. METHODS: Cephalograms were obtained from 216 participants aged 3-14 years. The effects of varying durations of snoring and oral breathing, as well as the risk of OSA, on craniofacial development were compared. Associations between craniofacial development and relevant clinical factors were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: C

Delayed diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a salivary gland tumour that may involve the respiratory tract and can cause symptoms that mimic benign conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Standard of treatment consists of surgical resection, but radiation therapy may also be appropriate for incomplete and unresectable tumours. A Hispanic woman in her 40s presented with 2 years of progressive throat pain, dyspnea and cough during meals. CT revealed a polypoid tracheal mass 1.6×1.2×1.7 cm and asymmetric submucosal enhancement and thickening with severe luminal narrowing, whic
