Does later chronotype cause poorer adolescent mental health? An adolescent brain cognitive development study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether chronotype (biobehavioral preference for sleep and wake timing) across early adolescence impacts mental health symptoms at age 13-14. This is a relationship with growing correlational evidence but limited causal exploration. METHODS: Participants were 7,489 adolescents (aged 9-10 at baseline; 13-14 at the fifth assessment wave) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD). Marginal structural models with machine learning-based weight estimation were used to assess the causal impact of chronotype at ages 11-12 and 12-13, as measured b

Developmental Pathways to Adult Mental Health in Adolescent Parents: Childhood and Early Adolescent Antecedents.

This study examined three questions: 1) what are the childhood predictors of becoming a teenage parent (versus a first-time parent as a young adult); 2) does becoming a parent in the teen years carry higher risk of young-adult internalizing and externalizing problems than becoming a first-time parent as a young adult; and 3) does the relation between childhood factors and adult mental health differ between teen parents and adult parents. We combined data from two U.S. samples that were followed from age 6 through age 35. Family socioeconomic status, one's parent's marital status, parenting beh

Cannabis legalization and early adolescent expectancies: Findings from the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

PURPOSE: Cannabis legalization in the U.S. has introduced an ongoing public health challenge. Among adults, cannabis legalization is associated with increased cannabis use and shifting attitudes toward cannabis use. These expectancies, or personal beliefs about the outcomes of a behavior, are both positive (e.g., increased relaxation) and negative (e.g., cognitive impairment). With rapid shifts in state-level cannabis legislation, the associations of these policies with adolescent cannabis expectancies are unknown. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cogni

Informant discrepancies in adolescent anxiety assessment: The roles of adolescent depression and school avoidance.

When assessing adolescent psychopathology, discrepancies in adolescent self-report versus caregiver informant-report scores on symptom measures are typical. As anxiety is the most common mental health concern among adolescents, understanding variables associated with adolescent-caregiver informant discrepancies on anxiety measures is valuable for assessment and treatment planning. However, although anxiety often co-occurs with other problems, no existing work has examined how other common emotional/behavioral problems (i.e., depression, school avoidance) among adolescents moderate the magnitud

Early adolescent gender diversity and mental health in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

BACKGROUND: There are known associations between mental health symptoms and transgender identity among adults. Whether this relationship extends to early adolescents and to gender domains other than identity is unclear. This study measured dimensions of gender in a large, diverse, sample of youth, and examined associations between diverse gender experiences and mental health. METHODS: The ABCD study is an ongoing, longitudinal, US cohort study. Baseline data (release 2.0) include 11,873 youth age 9/10 (48% female); and the 4,951 1-year follow-up visits (age 10/11; 48% female) completed prior

Attachment behavior and hostility as explanatory factors linking parent-adolescent conflict and adolescent adjustment.

This study examined whether adolescents' behavior in a support-seeking context helped to explain associations between increases in mother-adolescent conflict during early adolescence and changes in adolescents' internalizing and externalizing symptoms. A sample of 194 adolescents aged 12 to 14 (51% female) and their mothers were followed over 1 year. Mother-adolescent pairs participated in a speech task introducing an external social stressor into the parent-child relationship. Using a latent difference score model, adolescents' observed attachment behavior and hostility were compared as poten

Parent- and adolescent-reported barriers to participation in an adolescent overweight and obesity intervention.

This study explored reported barriers to treatment completion in a sample of adolescents and their parents who either completed or did not complete family-based cognitive behavioral lifestyle intervention for overweight and obese adolescents. The sample comprises 56 overweight or obese adolescents (52% female) aged 11.5-18.9 years (mean = 14.5, s.d. = 1.8) and a parent. 57% of families did not complete treatment and maintenance phases of the intervention. A telephone-administered questionnaire assessing barriers to participation was completed by 96% of adolescents and 91% of parent completers

Adolescent substance abuse treatment clinicians' self-help meeting referral practices and adolescent attendance rates.

Clinicians in adolescent substance abuse treatment programs often recommend attendance at 12-Step meetings; however, there has been no systematic study of their referral practices or possible influence on attendance rates. Quantitative and qualitative data were used to examine: (a) the self-help referral practices of clinicians employed in adolescent substance abuse treatment programs; and (b) the potential relationship between practices and self-help attendance. Data were analyzed from open-ended interviews with 28 clinicians at eight CSAT-funded SCY sites and from follow-up interviews with o

The outcome of adolescent eating disorders: findings from the Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study.

The study aimed to ascertain the outcome of adolescent onset eating disorders in a representative cohort of females. The design was a seven wave cohort study conducted over 6 years. 982 female participants from a total sample of 2032 secondary school students initially aged 14-15 years at 44 schools in the state of Victoria Australia. Branched questionnaires (BET) were used for assessing symptoms of eating disorder. A partial syndrome was defined where a subject met two DSM-IV criteria for either anorexia or bulimia nervosa. The revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R) was used for assessin

Adolescent varicocele: a surgical conundrum.

Adolescent varicocele is a common yet clinically complex condition, affecting up to 15% of postpubertal boys. The natural history and long-term reproductive implications in adolescents are not as well understood as the association of varicocele with infertility in the adult population. As such, the primary challenge in the management of adolescent varicocele lies in identifying the subset of boys at risk for impaired spermatogenesis while avoiding unnecessary intervention in those who may normalize testicular development as puberty progresses. The pathophysiology of varicocele-related testicul

[Paediatric and Adolescent ACL Injuries].

Children with open growth plates should not simply be regarded or managed as "small adults". A thorough understanding of the paediatric knee and its growth, along with the anatomical, hormonal, and neuromuscular changes occurring in children during maturation, is one of the key factors in the diagnosis, decision-making, and monitoring of skeletally immature patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment of these ACL injuries are crucial to protecting the long-term integrity of the child's knee with regular reassessments being required to pr

Consequences of adolescent drug use.

Substance use in adolescence is a known risk factor for the development of neuropsychiatric and substance use disorders in adulthood. This is in part due to the fact that critical aspects of brain development occur during adolescence, which can be altered by drug use. Despite concerted efforts to educate youth about the potential negative consequences of substance use, initiation remains common amongst adolescents world-wide. Additionally, though there has been substantial research on the topic, many questions remain about the predictors and the consequences of adolescent drug use. In the foll
