Everolimus and intensive behavioral therapy in an adolescent with tuberous sclerosis complex and severe behavior.

BACKGROUND: Self-injury and aggression have been reported in individuals with TSC (tuberous sclerosis complex), yet few data exist about treatment. Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, has been FDA-approved for subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs) and renal angiomyolipomas in TSC. However, clinical use of everolimus with direct, real-time observations of self-injury and aggression in an individual with TSC has not been reported. METHODS: During an inpatient admission to a neurobehavioral unit, real-time measurements of behaviors and seizures were recorded. An interdisciplinary team used the

Social and behavioral factors associated with high-risk sexual behavior among adolescents.

Relationships among risky sexual behaviors, other problem behaviors, and the family and peer context were examined for two samples of adolescents. Many adolescents reported behaviors (e.g., promiscuity or nonuse of condoms) which risked HIV or other sexually transmitted disease infection. Such risky behaviors were significantly intercorrelated. Consistent condom use was rare among those whose behavior otherwise entailed the greatest risk of infection. In both samples, an index of high-risk sexual behavior was significantly related to antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug or

Model Based on Self-Determination Theory for Sexual Behavior to Prevent Adolescent Pregnancy.

The objective of the study was to test a structural equation model in which sexual communication, life goals, basic psychological needs, and self-determined motivation were incorporated in order to explain their effect on sexual behavior to prevent adolescent pregnancy. This research was conducted with a sample of 620 Mexican adolescents of both sexes. The results of the model showed satisfactory goodness-of-fit indexes and it was determined that sexual communication with their mother predicted their intrinsic life goals. Sexual communication with friends predicted life goals and the satisfact

Self-Injurious Behavior and Its Characteristics in a Sample of Mexican Adolescent Students.

Adolescence is a difficult stage, a period of risk for developing disorders, including depression and self-injurious behavior. A non-random sample was drawn (n = 563) from first-year high school students (32.8%) 185 males and 378 females (67.14%) from public schools in Mexico. The age range was 15 and 19 years, with a mean age of 15.63 (SD = 0.78). According to the results, the sample was divided into n1 = 414 (73.3%) adolescents without self-injury (S.I.) and n2 = 149 (26.4%) S.I. adolescents. In addition, results were obtained on methods, motives, time, and frequency of S.I., and a model was

Outcomes of Early Adolescent Sexual Behavior in Australia: Longitudinal Findings in Young Adulthood.

PURPOSE: Limited longitudinal research has examined the adult health and behavioral outcomes associated with early adolescent sexual behavior. This paper examined whether adolescent sexual behavior predicted young adult health and social outcomes within longitudinal cohorts in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: Adolescents were recruited in 2002 to be state-representative of school students in Victoria, Australia, and resurveyed in 2003 and 2004. The sample responded to a web-based survey as young adults in 2010/2011. Multivariate negative binomial regression models examined the predictive effect

Preschool behavioral and social-cognitive problems as predictors of (Pre)adolescent disruptive behavior.

This article describes preschool social understanding and difficult behaviors (hot temper, disobedience, bossiness and bullying) as predictors of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and aggressive conduct disorder (ACD) in a Dutch population sample of (pre)adolescents (N = 1943), measured at age 10-12 and at age 13-15. ODD and ACD were assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist and the Youth Self-Report, preschool behavior was evaluated by the parental questionnaire [Symbol: see text]How was your child as a preschooler? (age 4-5)'. Adjusted for each other, all difficult preschool behaviors excep

Moderate zinc-iron deprivation influences behavior but not growth in adolescent rhesus monkeys.

Primate species demonstrate a prolonged period of development before reproductive maturity that includes distinctive periods of rapid growth in the late fetal, late infancy and early adolescent stages. Rhesus monkeys resemble humans in this discontinuous pattern of growth and also in its relationship to brain development. Studies of zinc deprivation in rhesus monkeys have suggested an important relationship among growth rate, nutrient status and behavioral performance in infancy as well as adolescence. Recently, moderate combined zinc and iron deprivation (intake 0.2 mg Zn and 0.8 mg Fe/d, com

Adolescent sexual behavior, drug use, and violence: increased reporting with computer survey technology.

Surveys of risk behaviors have been hobbled by their reliance on respondents to report accurately about engaging in behaviors that are highly sensitive and may be illegal. An audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (audio-CASI) technology for measuring those behaviors was tested with 1690 respondents in the 1995 National Survey of Adolescent Males. The respondents were randomly assigned to answer questions using either audio-CASI or a more traditional self-administered questionnaire. Estimates of the prevalence of male-male sex, injection drug use, and sexual contact with intravenous drug us

School-level application of a social bonding model to adolescent risk-taking behavior.

Adolescent bonding--attachment to, commitment to, and involvement in conventional social activities-decreases the likelihood of engaging in some risk-taking behaviors. The extent to which bonding opportunities in the school environment affect individual's bonding and risk-taking behaviors is less explored. This study tested a model that includes individual and environmental indicators of bonding to predict cigarette smoking, drinking, drug use, and sexual activity among ninth grade students. Survey data representing students in 20 schools in seven western states are reported. Twelfth grade stu

Behavioral disinhibition and sexual risk behavior among adolescents and young adults in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: While behavioral factors such as early age of sexual debut, inconsistent use of condoms and multiple sexual partners have been studied in Africa, less is known about how characteristics such as impulsivity and externalizing behaviors relate to HIV-related sexual risk-taking in that region. The purpose of this study was to develop a culturally adapted behavioral disinhibition index in a sample of adolescents and young adults in Malawi. We then sought to examine the relationship between the index and sexual risk behavior as measured by multiple sexual partners and number of lifetime

Risky sexual behaviors among Malay adolescents: a comparison with Chinese adolescents in Singapore.

OBJECTIVE: Malays, with majority of the individuals being Muslim, form the largest ethnic group in Southeast Asia. This region is experiencing a rising incidence of HIV infections. Due to circumcision and prohibition of sex outside marriage, being Muslim was argued to be a protective factor against sexually transmitted infections (STI) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). However, Malay adolescents were found to be more likely to contract chlamydia and gonorrhea than non-Malay adolescents in Singapore. DESIGN: Using a cross-sectional survey, we examined and compared safer sex knowledge, at

Differences in health behaviors and parenting knowledge between pregnant adolescents and parenting adolescents.

To better understand the differences between pregnant adolescents and parenting adolescents, we examined substance use, contraceptive behavior, and parenting knowledge among 91 first-time pregnant and parenting adolescents enrolled in an adolescent parenting case management program. After one year of program participation, pre- and post-test comparisons indicated improvements in contraception use and parenting knowledge, and increases in reported use of cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs among both groups. Adolescents who entered the program while pregnant experienced greater benefit than ado

Health behavior and related factors in adolescents with a history of abortion and never-pregnant adolescents.

Although prevention of unintended births among adolescents is health promoting, abortion, as one of those methods, has not been examined from a health promotion perspective. The authors describe and compare health behaviors, problem-solving appraisal, self-image, age, and use of contraceptives at first and most recent coitus in adolescents with a history of abortion and never-pregnant adolescents. A cross-sectional design with 26 pairs of adolescents matched on age, race, grade level, and Medicaid status was used. No significant differences were found between the 2 groups. The matched pairs' h

Memantine treatment does not affect compulsive behavior or frontostriatal connectivity in an adolescent rat model for quinpirole-induced compulsive checking behavior.

RATIONALE: Compulsivity often develops during childhood and is associated with elevated glutamate levels within the frontostriatal system. This suggests that anti-glutamatergic drugs, like memantine, may be an effective treatment. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to characterize the acute and chronic effect of memantine treatment on compulsive behavior and frontostriatal network structure and function in an adolescent rat model of compulsivity. METHODS: Juvenile Sprague-Dawley rats received repeated quinpirole, resulting in compulsive checking behavior (n = 32; compulsive) or saline injections (n = 3

Developmental changes and progression of adolescent alcohol use and rule-breaking behavior: Estimating subgroups of alcohol use predicting rule-breaking behavior.

Prior literature has explored the developmental trajectories and the comorbidity of adolescent alcohol use and rule-breaking behavior; however, there are several limitations of the current literature. First, little evidence exists that tested the longitudinal trajectories of both alcohol use and rule-breaking behavior while controlling for the shared effects of physical aggression, exposure to family violence, and demographic variables (e.g., gender and race). Second, limited studies have tested the longitudinal effects of baseline and growth of alcohol use on baseline and growth of rule-break

Chronic caffeine decreases anxiety-like behavior in the marble burying task in adolescent rats.

Exposure to chronic caffeine during adolescence has been shown to produce decreased anxiety-like behaviors in rats as well as decreased immobility in the forced swim test (FST) suggesting an antidepressant-like effect. The effects of chronic caffeine on anxiety, however, have been found to be test-dependent and sexually dimorphic. In addition, decreased immobility in the FST has been argued to reflect a shift toward active coping behavior as opposed to an antidepressant-like effect. In order to further characterize the effects of adolescent caffeine exposure, the present experiment assessed th

Sex-dependent impact of perinatal 5G electromagnetic field exposure in the adolescent rat behavior.

The fifth generation (5G) network is currently being worldwide spread out, raising questions about the potential impact of this new technology, particularly on immature organisms. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of daily 5G electromagnetic field (EMF) perinatal exposure on the neurodevelopment of rats. The exposure level was set to the limit of whole-body public exposure defined by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. The mother rat specific absorption rate (SAR) was 0.07 W/kg for 22 h/day at 3500 MHz continuous wave from gestational day (GD) 8

Behavior Change Techniques and Delivery Modes in Interventions Targeting Adolescent Gambling: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent gambling can lead to significant harms, yet participation rates continue to rise. Interventions targeting gambling reduction have been implemented in this population. However, it is not clear which behavior change techniques (BCTs) and modes of delivery (MOD) are most effective at reducing gambling. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify 'promising' BCTs and MODs by systematically reviewing interventions targeting adolescent gambling behavior. 'Promising' was defined as those present in at least 25% of all interventions and in at least two effective inter
